Im more interested in the LAK optical-landing system and when/if they will be installing one. Is this different from US/French/Brazilian FLOLS/IFLOLS system.

Any one wanna answer me πŸ˜› I dont care about % of GDP. They spend more than they declare and they have an aircraft carrier that is looking closer and closer to being launched. They are going to be the biggest navy in the world after the US in the next 20 years.

But if they dont have a system to land planes on the decks they’re gonna be a bit screwed πŸ˜›

Ok personally I think that we should ask BAE to elongate the Astute design and stick in 6 tubes for a trident replacement. That would be my ideal idea and I think would save a fair amount of cash.

I want a nuclear deterant but I dont think we need to destroy the world.

My other cheaper option I would say would be to possible do the following. Switch to Cruise missile based deterant but with a back up so to speak, we puchase a small number of land based ICBM from the US to base in 3 locations around the UK. Yes they might be know about and be targets but we should know an attack is on route and have enough time to get some of them off. In the mean time all subs at sea ( I would arm all astutes with nuclear cruise missiles) would make their way to launch point).

Yes we would need to develop a spersonic/hypersonic cruise missile but could we do this with a partner?

$65 billion would rebuild our navy to a proper state – any chance the US Navy wants to lend the RN some funds :(.

Or have them agree to use Mantis and Taranis as the base platform for those join UAV projects we’ve been talking about.

we could def get a better deal out of them than we get otherwise. I want to keep building carriers.

buy french Rafales and get the french to buy a CVF from us. They get a major sale of jets and we build them a new carrier for it every one’s a winner.

we order 100 of the jets – cost close to 6 bill – we build them a carrier – 3 bill we get a better fighter and they get to say they got the better deal. Maybe get them to buy AW159 Lynx Wildcat’s in the order something 25-30 of those then we are getting some where.

Its the loitering capability that was rather cool on this. Still I wonder if its possible to do anything with a new version of Hellfire? Adding some sort of booster (like aster 30)

Fifth Fleet ready for Iran attack, experts say

Military experts say the Fifth Fleet has come a long way since Iranian gunboats crippled it within hours in a notorious war game five years ago.

In fact, says John Pike, president of the Alexandria, Va.-based Global Security Web site, the Navy was well on its way to solving the challenge of fending off the swarming swift boats before the war game began.

In that test, an enemy “red team” headed by retired Marine Corps Gen. Paul Van Riper deployed the gun boats and propeller-driven suicide planes to paralyze the Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain in the Persian Gulf.

It took Riper less than two hours to knock it out of commission.

Key to the shocking result was Van Riper’s strategy of neutralizing the American advantage in big guns and cruise missiles by getting in close before hostilities began.

But the Navy now has the MK 182, β€œthe mother of all shotgun shells,” fired by 5-inch guns deployed on every major ship in the fleet, says Pike.

Love the MK182 – wonder if we have something similar for our guns on type 23
