Yes. I meant no disrespect to the talented people who made the best of a bad job. However, to scrap it at this point I find obscene and dysfunctional, rather than just sad.
The waste of space is at the most senior level, in the culture of boardrooms and the Cabinet Room in this country. The same culture of short-term ‘values’ that obliged the last administration to bail-out a meltdown in the financial ‘industry’ and for which decent, gifted and dedicated people are now paying with their jobs. A tragedy.

Yes, culture, that’s ‘our’ problem. Lack of respect for those that actually ‘make’ and originate wonderful things in the tactile here-and-now. Short-term, shareholder-driven bull**** values beget corporates such as British-waste-of-space, as I understand that entity is commonly referred to in within the RAF.
Whatever. We’re mindful of the fact that the British state is the only one to have scrapped and abandoned a successful space programe, and even that’s ancient history now, yet Prospero keeps his quiet, orbiting watch.

Diseca…in theatre would need to have been US-funded, UK as mercenary. The logical presence would have been Special Forces and intel types, trying to bring Malayan/Confrontation experience for rural hearts and minds (many rumours that we did exactly that.)…
Many years ago a friend and I were resigned to spending a rainy Autumn night marooned in a hotel bar in Dieppe. Only two other people in the place, we four ended-up talking and drinking the rainy night away into morning. Great company, one American, the other English. At some point the getting-to-know-you’s gave that one was ex-Special Forces, the other ex-SAS. These gentlemen were old friends. They first met on ops in Vietnam.
Neither my friend nor I were especially interested in pursuing the subject, nor were they in discussing it, the conversation being life in general and the here and now – present friends and trends, not pasts. But their telling of the origin of their friendship gave us all a brief chuckle about history, theory and practice.
Another late night tale.

If I were in the business of publishing I’d likely feel KP’s unprofessionalism and lack of respect rather more keenly – I’d likely react accordingly. The weight of professional ethics being loaded onto the hurt of the gross discourtesy displayed towards this community. An unavoidable reaction if one actually cares about this stuff. And in the end this ‘stuff’ is about people – not metal, not engineering, as lovely as they are. It’s about honour and respect. Or it’s nothing at all.
To Key Publishing (a ‘business’ – currently):
As with other forum providers you meet the expense of these fora because you intend that they serve your business, the desired return being positive PR and a peerless market research tool. They represent a profit centre – there is no altruism in your calculation whatsoever. If ‘you’ are reading, please note that this affair has been a very public own goal. Fail.
I daresay that there are executives at Key who never read these fora. It maybe that there are executives at Key who don’t have any interest whatsoever in aviation, historic or otherwise. Be that as it may, if someone would please print this off, wander over to the office (or pop it into the mail), The individual concerned is probably more comfortable with paper –
Your lack of plain good manners and your chronic inability to understand how to promote the best interests of your business has been made quite apparent. In public. That, at least, is transparent.

DisecaNo, Key don’t meet the expense of this forum out of the goodness of their heart. This is not altruism. They clearly pretend to run a business and their fora are supposed to be part of it.
Were this forum to close those of a like mind and interest would likely find another, or another forum would find them. Were that forum not intimately attached to a ‘business’ interest it would very likely be a rather braver, honest and more reliable place to exchange.
I find this episode shocking. The utter lack of transparency is disrespectful to us all, especially to the Moderators who freely give up their time and cares. Bad business. Bad for business. Amateur in the extreme.

This is all a very sad turn of events
However – At the end of the day this is Key’s site and Key’s forum. We post on the site at Key’s invitation. The fact remains that they don’t have to run the forum at all. They may decide that the hassle it causes is too much and just pull the plug on it.
In which case no-one will benefit
