No. 1 Bristol Britannia?
No. 3 Boeing B-52?
No. 4 Hess’s aircraft (forget the type, perhaps a Dornier Do.17)
But ours didn’t have a concrete wall round the base! (At Aberporth – I wonder how much taxpayers’ money we fired into Cardigan Bay!)
No. 3 is an Armstrong Whitworth Argosy, of course (memories of scorching days in the Middle East long ago . . .)
Birmingham mosaic
Well, I hope it was preserved, I thought it was wonderful! Here is another section.

No. 5 – Airspeed Ambassador?
Does anyone know if there is a Type 87 (Bloodhound Mk 2 missile radar) still around anywhere? I spent a few years assembling, dismantling, transporting, reassembling and operating one – it was a huge monstrosity but had a beautiful big parabolic aerial! I would love to see one again, and even better get inside to marvel at all the rows of valve-equipped racks!
Even better perhaps, how about a CPN-4? Passed my ground radar fitter exam on the one at Locking many moons ago.
Worthyone – as I live in Sweden and only ever visited Birmingham once, all I remember was that it is quite close to New Street station, a little uphill from there, and as I said is a sunken garden in the middle of a roundabout. Drivers would probably never see it, but several pedestrian underpasses meet there. Amazing what you can find if you walk around, as I usually do!
The photo was taken on 5 February 2004 so I am sure it is still there – that’s only one part of a huge mosaic, beautifully done.

20 hours now since 666 made a move – thanks for the analysis, DonClark, and many thanks for your informative posts – perhaps it really is time now to put this thread to bed – which is where I shall shortly be!

East Midlands Wessexes
Here are the EM three, very neatly lined up.
I can’t tell my a*se from my elbow!
(Sorry, couldn’t resist it, but that seems to be the way this thread is going)

Farewell finally to the good old DC9.
