One thing that must places a big cost, logistics and training burden is the sheer number of fighter types and the cost of upgrading relatively small numbers and the different weapons systems. No air force in the world has as many types.

    Jaguar
    MIG-29
    MIG-27
    Mirage 2000
    SU-30
    Rafael?

Have not even included the MIG-21s and MIG-23s they are phasing out!

Interim budget = to tide over till next govt. is sworn in. Not meant to last the entire FY. Thats why its called interim budget.

If one of the opposition parties form the govt., then chances are they would increase the budget from the current IIRC ~1.7% of GDP to something higher; perhaps 2%? It was ~2.2/2.4% of GDP just a couple of years ago.

If it is still the present set, who knows how far it will fall as a percentage of GDP!

If its the third set of people; no one knows what they will do!

So its good fun to wait and see where the cards fall.

Good luck to all foreign suppliers!

Although the interim budget is relevant till the new government presents a regular budget after the 2014 general elections, it nonetheless sets a broad roadmap for various ministries and departments. Defence being a major charge on the central government budget, it is worthwhile to look at the interim allocation that impinges on the modernization and other needs of the Indian armed forces. “

too early to comment without knowing the specifics of the crash..besides, there is a very large number of Dhruvs flying with the Indian Armed Services and their safety record is good.

There are around 60. Not a “very large” number, and there have been quite a few incidents as TR1 points out.

Yes. But that is hardly a justification for these violations of human rights. The goal should be improvement, not self-approval. If you orientate yourself only on the mistakes and crimes of others, the circumstances will certainly get worse.

Right, and even if that was the case, the Navy News section of a military forum is the right place to do that?

You claim its much easier. And like most of your posts there is no evidence presented to support your theories.

Its extremely conservative extropolation from this year’s actual budget.

You may want to re-look at this. According to various reports now emerging India is also “postponing” decisions on Avro replacement, Navy MR choppers and M777 guns.

Looks like Rafale is not the only victim.

As per Alan Warnes on Twitter. Seems the RJAF birds being transferred were upgraded to MLU in 2005 by TAI and would fit snugly into the PAF MLU fleet.

    Very nice move by PAF

Was the F-16 acquisition expected? Pakistan and China have offered JF-17 to several countries. You would think they would rather acquire more JF-17.

JF-17s are being delivered to PAF on a weekly basis, 3rd Sqd should have converted by now and Block II in production.

PAF has 1 Block 52 sqd and 2 over strength A/B MLU squadrons. This lets it create a 4th F-16 squadron practically overnight. When you premier fighters are the JF-17 and F-16, that is a no brainer surely!?

7 BVR capable sqds compared to just 4 last year.

Yeah. IIRC (note that this is from memory, & I’ve just got back from the pub after leading a bike ride, & can’t be arsed to check anything). Tomorrow . . . . they’ve replaced Tornado ADV with Typhoon, & are getting more Tiffies. Total numbers of first-line combat aircraft are going up, so it’s not one to one.

They have a load of first generation F-15s which are running out of life, a lot of downgraded (when bought) F-15Es which they’ve signed up to have upgraded to a rather spiffing spec with all the latest gadgets such as top notch AESA radar, & quite a few Tornadoes which they’ve just had upgraded.

They’ve ordered some new F-15E+ of the same level as the upgrade they’re getting for their current two seat F-15s, & are looking for something non-US to replace the rest of the Tornadoes. Tiffies with all the ground attack options added would be just the job.

Are the Tornados not going through a comprehensive upgrade programme? Surely the Typhoons would just serve to increase force size and not replace them?

Thanks for the reply … any note on the bomb type(s) used in such operations?

From what I have read a mix of MK82/84 bombs (Pakistan makes these at home) and LGBS of various types. PAF thinking is that it is good for the different sqds to get operational experience with bomb tossing and laser precision attacks.
