My point exactly. Not sure where Stroud came in.
Purely on the strength of what’s above and thinking of current affairs, I thought it was the Strood and Rochester by election that was in the limelight just now. Am I missing something?
Thanks for doing that, Prop Strike……. appreciated
Looks like a dh9a……purely by the pattern of stitching aft of the rear cockpit; I know a few were turned into trainers.
Marvellous photos…….Thanks for sharing.
Well, went to see it last night. Marvellous! Big screen really made a difference……. a fifteen foot high Richard Todd… gosh!
I am sure I am not the first on this place to say this but the huge size of the images enabled me to see a thing I had never noticed before : the Canberra visible through the car window in the scene where the civil servants are moaning about the time they have wasted on the project!
Ticket has been booked for a couple of weeks now; I must admit that, at the age of 58, I have never seen it on a big screen. First time I saw it was at the age of ten when, thanks to a truly enlightened school headmaster, we had a special screening in the assembly hall.
James Stewart. …….a true Hollywood great. But June Allyson………aaaargh!
Thanks for that, all.
Funny thing……never really liked the Hunter as a youngster but the rarer they get the more nostalgic I get. Won’t be long before I come over all unnecessary at the sight of a Tornado!
Now that IS a shame. I’m no researcher but this is a very informative site.
Ahem…….I note that the description has now dropped the ‘data plate’ bit!
As a youngster, when my father was based at Akrotiri, I was privileged to see Joe L’Estrange display a Vulcan at the station open days on more than one occasion. Stunning. Dad, who was a Corporal at the time, remembers him as a gentleman with a wicked sense of humour.
Ah, Akrotiri in the early seventies. Vulcans, Lightnings, Argosies (70 Sqn were converting), Hercules’ and Whirlwinds. Not to mention any visiting aircraft. What wouldn’t I give for time travel and a decent camera!
And a true Aviation Great; John Young. Gemini, Apollo (twice – once as a moon walker), and Space Shuttle.
Glad to have been of some assistance! Haven’t seen Baxter’s book for over ten years (my copy got donated to Newark Air Museum shop along with many others when downsizing my house), but I just had a vague idea that I had seen the twin of the image you described therein. Why can I remember ridiculously trivial stuff like that but not what Mrs Meteor said to me five minutes ago?
I can’t find the photo and believe me I am no expert but I seem to recall seeing a photo similar to the one described of Bedford spinning a Hunter at Farnborough. (1961?). Think it might have been in Raymond Baxter’s book?
