Thanks for posting Richard.
Is there any chance I could bother you for a big copy of that last photo? It’s quite stunning.
For my own private use, naturally!
Thoughts.
Fundamentally, we are all enthusiasts with a passion for one particular subject, namely the preservation of historic aircraft. In that one way, we are very similar people.
However, what we have to remember is that within that deceptively simple premise, the range of backgrounds on here is enormous.
Some posters operate flyable historic aircraft. Some people are or have been intricately and thoroughly involved in restoring them. Some are involved with museums, funding bodies or organisations. Others collect and restore aretfacts and parts in their garages. Some are incredibly skilled photographers. Some, like me, are committed enthusiasts with no particular background, but who find the knowledge and “inside information” on this forum irresistably fascinating.
There are also a vast range of nationalities, “social classes”, ages, and political leanings.
In other words, of course we will always disagree, often passionately, about how we think aviation preservation should work. In many ways the debate is just as stimulating and interesting as the news and gossip. I’ve often started reading a thread with a particular view about an issue, and come away with a much broader appreciation of the complexities and validity of other people’s views.
But as Jeepman says above, it is vital to try and engage brain before keyboard-the Mods may be marvellous, but it is up to us to be tactful in the first place! Surely we must be able to air our feelings without resorting to petty name-calling and mud-slinging?
Let’s hope so 🙂
What a relief to have your thread back, DCW et al. I was secretly hopeful, but it’s still a relief.
For the vast majority of people here who live out of easy reach of Duxford, this is a wonderful and exciting link to all that’s going on, not to mention a theatre for some superb photography.
I hope you can all keep it up, unmolested by careless comment, for years to come 🙂
Thanks!
One of, if not the most enjoyable threads on this form in my opinion. I too am deeply sad to see it go.
That’s a fascinating video, and it certainly shows how much more devastating is the 30mm gun than the 20mm.
Sad that Spits got demolished I suppose, but if given the choice between going back in time and either preserving those three or the Swift F.1, I’d go for the swift any day of the week!
Very sad. My fondest memory of Jonathan’s displays in this wonderful machine was his solo opener at the Kemble show a couple of years back. As if by magic, the rain cleared up, and Miss Demeanour came tearing out of the black clouds into the sunlight to start an amzingly elegant routine. Thanks for all the memories Jonathan!
Great pictures, thanks for posting!
Shame to think quite how many of those were scrapped or sold later-the Victor, Canberra and Varsity for starters 🙁
To what extent is the Wapiti original material?
The entire undercarriage assembly, engine and prop are quite obviously “home-made” but it’s not clear how much original structure is there inside-does anybody know?
I am inclined to agree that they should start again from scratch…
Well, the guy is clearly pretty dedicated-how many private collectors manage to preserve their whole aircraft undercover?!
That’s marvellous, well done guys! Surely this is the only “live” Beau in the world?
Thanks Mauld for a superb video!
Am I the only one who thinks SX336 should be kept in its original scheme? It looks terrific!
I also looked around 808 this year. The flight crew mentioned that most of them had other jobs to go to in the C-130, Voyager etc fleets.
They also said that Ten’s flouting of EU noise legislation was getting to be quite a problem for staging around Europe.
Thanks for posting Tony.
What a beautiful, reliable, nostalgic and capable aircraft. They’ve served the RAF faultlessly for 48 years, which by my book is superb value for money.
Let’s hope this one goes to Cosford, and gets a hangar built over it. It’s the least it deserves!
21st is out for me, sorry Elliott.
