I personally think that the most satisfactory outcome is to have one, complete, composite Barracuda in the FAAM which is as original as possible, as a memorial to all the crews who flew the type and didn’t live to tell the tale. I’m sure the guys who died in DP872, DR306 and LS931 would all be absolutely chuffed that a dedicated and skillful team is resurrecting a Barracuda from bits of “their” aircraft to remember their sacrifices by! It would be quite possible for the completed aircraft to be accompanied by a plaque or other memorial commemorating the three crews equally.
So in that sense, I for one don’t think it matters which of those three identities is used: to me it simply ought to be the one from which the majority of material is drawn.
T-6 back again over Norwich heading S, got a better view this, time, appeared to be an SNJ in USN markings.
Amazing! That’s a project to make the French Lancaster restoration look like a piece of cake. Great to hear that another Sunderland survives!
Harvard over central Norwich, headed SE about an hour ago.

The Wetaskiwin Whitney Straight was there to 2008 at least…

I probably missed it, but has anybody mentioned the Martinet slowly being pieced back together at Woodley, recovered as a crashed civil target tug in Iceland?
In the case of the Cosford example, maybe they kept them closed to repel nesting birds, and as Paul says simply forgot to lower them?
Get well soon!
Bluebird Mike didn’t mention that the July diary is now on the Barra website…

Great work guys, that tailplane is starting to come together. I for one am going to be following this avidly, it’s really great to see such an enthusiastic, witty and inventive team getting stuck into ressurecting an extinct type. Keep it up! 😀
I thought it was pretty good, and I for one can forgive it the tendency to stray into hyperbole-as Sopwith said it’s aimed at enthusing and interesting Joe public, and does a good job.
For me the inclusion of the RR299 footage, which I had not seen, was very poignant and chilling-and an unusually brave step. However, using it to cast doubt the current pilot’s ability seemed pretty unnecessary.
I agree about the slightly rough treatment given to DHAM and Avspecs-in each case a half-sentence more narration would have given a bit more balance.
Nice to see some unusual archive footage: I’ve never seen the newsreel of the Amiens raid, let alone footage of Sea Mosquitoes landing on carriers. I was amused, however, to see the Douglas Boston getting so much airplay-It doesn’t look that similar!
Overall, not bad. And Kudos to C4 for choice of Arthur Williams. In this day and age disability should not be any barrier at all to someone with such a likeable personality, good camera manner and obvious passion for his subject-but I bet it’s still bl–dy hard to make your way as a presenter if you’re in a wheelchair.
Great! Looking forward to seeing it on the airshow circuit soon 🙂
Prototype/Early B.1 Vulcan
Victor B.1
Baby Spit (naturally)
Hawker Fury
Supermarine Scimitar
F-101 two-seat variants
Two-seat Jaguar
Mirage IV
FW-200 Condor
Vega Gull (OK, not a “combat aircraft”)
I also have a real soft spot for the Gladiator. Not everyone’s idea of beauty but to me it just looks “right”.
Wow, I’d no idea it had advanced that much!
The “restorations” section of the RNZAFM website is decidedly out of date.
Great to see it done, and I look forward to seeing some more of their projects move along (especially the Vildebeest)
Back to the OP’s question, surely if the rest of the RAF will get the Hawk T.2 when the T.1 is retired, does it not follow that the Reds will follow suit? It would make the kind of airframe rotation described earlier much easier if both the Reds and the main RAF continued to operate the same type.
Mark12, thanks for posting.
That’s a superb restoration, shame (in some ways) that it’s going abroad-while the Germans of course have every right to fly their heritage, it would be nice to have at least one genuine Bf109 on the UK circuit!
Can anybody help with history etc of Werk Nr.1983? Is this an Eastern Front recovery?
