We do some charters from LHR in the summer at bmi.
Mainly italian destinations like Cagliari, Catania, Verona etc. I think they’re on behalf of Magic of Italy and the likes of.
greekdude,
Yes, bmi diamond club members can earn points on VS and vice versa. They codeshare on several of our routes.
As for the Mumbai and Delhi routes, I would have thought operating from Manchester would be easier as they already have the crew’s there, there isn’t any direct competition (only routings being via somewhere else) and I hear that PIA do well on their routes to Pakistan.
I would imagine there is something restricting bmi from going to India from LHR too. There usually is! I think there’s some sort of agreement in place already with Air India to allow them to pick up passengers for their onwards flights from LHR to JFK, and I don’t think bmi would be included in this. I would imagine its all to do with BA!
I heard recently that when the YYZ route goes down to 4 times a week through next winter, bmi are looking to operate flights to BGI, ANU and UVF (maybe just one destination of those three).
Also, bmi is awaiting a decision with the indian government about flying into Mumbai and Delhi from Manchester. All very interesting!

LBA is not entirely EMB, we have 1 Fokker 100 during this winter and the summer will be 3 Fokker 100s as well as 1x ERj135 and 145.
We had an internal communication about Fokker’s at LBA recently. I think you’ll find the one that runs through LBA at the moment is LHR based, and does the LBA/LHR shuttles only. As far as I’m aware, no LBA cabin crew are trained on the F100, only the EMB’s.
As for more coming through the summer, the aircraft concerned are being leased temporarily to bmi regional so that they can return 2 wet-leased ERJ135/145’s on loan from other airlines. I think they’ve only been able to release the F100’s from LHR as and when the A319’s arrive.
Its a strange way of doing things I know, but I guess thats what happens when you have several different operations in the same group!
EMA is all bmibaby (WW) apart from EMA/BRU and the new EMA/ABZ, both operated by bmi regional on EMB145’s.
You have to remember too that LBA is an entirely Embraer base, they have 135’s and 145’s. So if your talking about the size of aircraft fleet, maybe a Scottish airport would be bigger as they’re a mix of Airbus and Embraer. Also, GLA and EDI operate a small amount of charters on the Airbus.

Didn’t they have one of these not too long ago, but just decided to shut it down? I think if Virgin really wanted to have feeder routes, they have enough capitol to purchase or lease a few narrow bodies, even if they are second hand.
I don’t really think you can call Athens a European network. They did have something weird on a really old turboprop from Maastricht I think, it didn’t last long. Obviously there’s Virgin Express too, but its not UK based and doesn’t feed any Virgin Atlantic flights. What I mean is, if you call Virgin Atlantic reseravtions and want to connect from somewhere in Europe, they’ll offer you a codeshared bmi flight to get you to your VS flight.
Does anyone know what Tour Operator SCY are operating these flights for?
Nice pics! The EZY A319 is quite a regular at EMA at the moment.
Have you ever seen so many clapt out old 737’s though!!! The wonderful world of no-frills hey!
I did hear that Richard Branson was seen at Donington Hall, but I don’t think either side could agree anything.
As far as I know, although bmi have made a loss recently, there’s plenty of cash still in the pot to keep things running. So far this year, I think things are getting better.
I can’t see bmi loosing its identity either, its Sir Michael’s baby after all. I think Virgin would have liked a european and domestic carrier to feed their long haul services, but I don’t think its going to be bmi.
Don’t forget bmibaby are also now offering you the ability to select your own seat on the flight during the booking process!!!
If its anything like Canjet (which I’ve recently booked on), using Navataire airline reservations, it shows you a seat map of the aircraft at the end of your booking and you can literally select the exact seat, not just a preference!
I think the whole EZY concept of jump on board as fast as you can and grab a seat is rather tacky, and people don’t like it. Its the little things that make you loyal to an airline, and price obviously!
As long as WW stick with undercutting EZY, they’ll be fine.
Incidentally, I have a strong feeling these LGW routes will be W patterns operated by EMA crew from what I’ve heard.
This has already been covered in an earlier post, but I believe the main reason behind this is that the load factors on AC are generally good, but they use a 767 that is normally for domestic service only in Canada.
bmi already have their 3rd A330 back, and nothing much to do with it just now apart from act as back-up. Also AC used to operate the MAN-YYZ route without a First or Business Cabin, just Economy and then the Domestic First cabin sold as Economy service with more leg room (they call it “Supercomfort”).
I think it makes sense for bmi to offer 3 cabins and upgraded to a an A330 service. I’m sure the load factors are good, and from what I hear, bookings have started strongly since the service was launched. Also, all affected AC directly booked passengers will be reacommodated on the bmi service. It will then operate as a codeshare with AC.
Stunning! Really like it!
I much prefer the blue engines to dull grey.
Maybe bmibaby should commision you to do something with that wishy washy livery 😉
while the 747-200’s are good and reliable eal have had no troubles in the past with this aircraft type
I’m not sure you have noticed their on-time performance recently then??? Not sure I’d agree with that statment.
the 747-200 is the right size for the route which is the only long haul route they use
What about the LGW-CMB-SYD for Austravel? Today, they have an aircraft coming in from Bogota and Caracas. Its not just the Travelcity charter to SFB they do.
Latest information on yesterdays delayed flight is that they were all accommodated in hotels last night and were due to fly at 0900 this morning. The aircraft is now Tech AGAIN, as is the back-up aircraft! Very reliable, I’ll have a whole fleet myself please! LOL
Thinking about it now, I’m sure there was some link there to TransAer after they went under. I’m pretty sure the Prime A300 was an Irish reg as were TransAer.
I seem to remember one of my colleagues at the airport nickname Prime as “TransAer – The Revenge!” :p
Yes, AC are to code-share on the route. It will be a BD aircraft though (flight number BD713 already allocated in line with other transatlantic routes). Sorry if my original post was unclear.
Last time I saw G-WWBD, it was in plain white with just a Star Alliance tail. I’m presuming it’ll be back in something more appropriate soon! 😉
The A330’s do tend to rotate around from route to route though as one goes in for maintenance every Tuesday as the IAD service doesn’t operate on that day.
