I have travelled on the AC service from MAN to YYZ. Its a 767-200 on the route, and the type they usually operate on domestic services with no Executive class. Its has the Executive seats, but they sell them as “Supercomfort” which is basically the seats, with the economy service!
As far as bmi’s current transatlantic routes are going, the ORD service always has a higher load than IAD. Maybe thats down to better connections available via ORD? I think the IAD is going to operate all year round from now on though. No mention of dropping it through the winter at the moment. The New Economy cabin seems to sell well as the upgrades aren’t that bad price wise through reservations.
I totally agree airlines cannot just go out and buy a new fleet, but it comes back to the old saying “you get what you pay for” doesn’t it?!
Its a cosumers market after all. bmi are replacing the Fokker 100 fleet, and the create a large volume of passenger complaints. Maybe some other airlines should be following suit?
I travelled on the one of the 200’s that EAF now operate when they were still with BA nearly 10yrs ago now, and they were “tired and shabby” then.
When I landed into Antigua, all of the oxygen masks deployed and some of the hat racks actually dislodged from the ceiling and were literally hanging in mid air. Quite frightening, and I’m a flyer every day of my life! The flight deck crew spent an hour or so pushing everything back into place and then we got on our way back to LGW. Not good then, so I dred to think what state these aircraft are in now.
I believe EAF still operate 737-200’s as well. Why??? Is there really any need to be flying round such old relic’s when there are newer models out there. After all, its not so long since they ditched the BAC1-11’s and they were frightening enough!
I stand by my views, I wouldn’t travel on something that old given the choice. I know you can still have the same problems with a new aircraft, but hey, why increase the chances???
From memory, they went bust sometime after September 11th attacks. Their A300 was based at EMA, but rarely seemed to be used apart from some work on behalf of British Mediterranean (BA Franchise). Apparently, they had Cabin and Flight deck crews on airport stand-by a lot, staying in the airport hotel at EMA.
Don’t know what happened to their A300.
From my experiences, the best I’ve been has to be between Flybe’s Dash 8 Q400 and the good old ATR72. They both feel spacious to me, and not at all like your in a Turboprop!
The most frightening has to be the Jetstream 31! I had the displeasure of BHX-LGW with Community Express Airlines (if anyone remembers them?) many years ago. I couldn’t let go of the seat in front of me all the way there, and I fly as cabin crew for a living too! I guess the fact that the flight deck door was an old curtain didn’t help either!
🙂
I think they appeared shortly after TransJet stopped flying and ended up doing some passenger rescue flights for them (including some of my friends stuck in Rhodes!).
Funny how they operate MD83’s as did TransJet!!!
So unnecessary!
Although, the main point for trying to get the name changed was that passengers from overseas had no idea where East Midlands Airport was, or where it is near to.
The bmibaby.com website has used Nottingham (East Midlands) in the booking engine for some time now, and I understand bookings have increased as a result. People from other countries have heard of Nottingham and its history, but don’t know where East Midlands is.
Personally, I think they should leave it alone. I like East Midlands, you know where you are with it in my opinion! People will still call it that even its changed!

Hi folks,
I’d be surprised if bmibaby pulled out of MME after starting more routes. bmi mainline have had an agreement with MME to operate the MME-LHR route for some time, and obviously having links at MME, ground handling agents etc, its fairly easy to start operations from there.
Don’t forget also, bmibaby are getting rid of some of the 737-500’s and getting more 737-300’s soon. By operating mainly W patterns from MME, they don’t need to base crew there and have to recruit bmibaby dedicated cabin staff. bmi don’t use the same cabin staff on each division like MYT/VZ seem to.
I think MME will be a sucess and you’ll see an aircraft based there soon once the routes are proven and warrent a based aircraft.

Markus
The Renaissance Heathrow is great if you can get a room at the back of the hotel looking onto the runway, obviously the higher floors are better!
Also, there is a fairly new Holiday Inn on the Bath Road near the BA Compass Centre, it also has some rooms with a good view of the approach and touchdown at LHR.
Hi Nationwide Air,
From what I’ve heard, many Diamond Club frequent flyer members have complained about the legroom in Business (I understand some of the F100’s are still in bmibaby config from last time they had them), noise on board and generally being old and tired! They still have a 2 + 3 config in economy and business class. I guess they all got used to Airbus and now having to get on the F100’s isn’t so nice for them.
Has anyone been on a bmi F100 recently? I think you would know where I was coming from if you had. 😉
Hi eveyone…
I work for bmi myself. Just to update you, the latest is that the F100’s which are currently at LHR covering the 737’s will be coming back to EMA to operate for bmibaby over the winter timetable. Apparently, bmibaby want to get rid of the 737-500’s, and they will also loose two of their 737’s based at EMA over the winter. These aircraft are believed to be covering the new operations for bmibaby from MME. The strange thing is though, these F100 flights for bmibaby will be operated by LHR based mainline crew!
I understand the F100’s have been extremely unpopular back at LHR, but maybe the bmibaby passengers aren’t so fussy 😉
As for the A330’s, we still have only 3. When the SAA leased aircraft comes back shortly, it is believed it will be leased out again. There is no back-up aircraft for long haul operations, but bear in mind that each Tuesday the Washington services does not operate and one A330 is taken into engineering instead.
I’m pretty sure that bmi regional will keep the Embraer fleet. The ERJ135’s are used for route testing to see if a route is viable before upgrading to a ERJ145.
RE: bmi A330 emergency landing in Moncton
Not sure if any of the 2 SAA aircraft have been ferried to Jo’burg yet. One is definately painted though. I understand the MAN-IAD service finishes this week anyway, so that will make the 2nd SAA aircraft available.
