Obviously when they shot down all those SR-71’s the writing was on the wall. But in all seriousness the B-70 was insanely expensive and the right decision was made. The program would have made B-2A look cheap.

EJ200 production doesn’t have much to go. Either the EF Consortium finds a new market or it’s pretty much done. India has a need for afterburning technology, not the whole engine. Let’s make a deal should be the attitude.
The only way Tejas is going to be 100% indigenous is by picking up engine production, which EF consortium can do. Dassault cannot.
It’s not actually an engine. It’s just a fan, driven by a shaft from the one & only engine that powers the aircraft in all phases of flight.
But yes, it is dead weight most of the time.
Edit: I had it wrong, X-32 shifted the engine forward and used bypass air ducts fore and redirected hot gases aft.
I always thought the process was flawed, not the competition itself. If both teams had developed just subsets of the design then you would have had a much more refined product albeit with some delay to the finished product. As an engineer at Boeing, I would have wanted the access to LockMart’s VTOL plan. As an engineer at LockMart, I would have wanted Boeing’s carbon nanotube materials technology. I didn’t care for the guppy mouth, but if the choice was between subcomponents, that would have never been the issue. In reality both companies oversee the production of the final product!
This whole idea could have been pushed further yet. P&W and GE would have continued to work on their respective engines. An argument could have been made for the USN version to utilize multiple engines with P&W, GE, and Honeywell all vying for their version of what that meant. Would it really be bad that the engine layout changed, but all three versions still shared components? In the end the airframe wasn’t the expensive parameter, but it’s the one that borked up the engineering.
The answer really is neither. The gear doesn’t represent either and I believe the missiles and air crews depended on live fire exercises to verify both competency, but also to certify functionality.

About twenty five years ago when the Pentagon think tanks started pushing for rapid cohesion of battle space data, that may not have been. Its much different now.
Laser gyro and GPS give you your current position, azimuth and elevation are known, the ground is already mapped so if you have direction you know maximum distance, and going by known parameters you have a pretty good guesstimate for distance. Add in you know the limits of your sensory, references of your target between snapshots, perhaps secondary detectors off board, a towed sensor in some cases…
The heavier missile is probably going to show less atmospheric effects of air friction during its trajectory. It needs the larger fins because its retaining a higher energy state. The missile that sheds a dramatic proportion of its weight requires a slimmer, low air friction design to assure it retains energy at the terminal phase.
I personally am going to want the larger platform flying at higher velocities, which by the way is the higher platform launching the larger missiles at longer ranges.
