Another film as seen in The London Film Festival,I put my bum on my seat to watch Once.
Starring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova,this could be seen as a follow-up to The Commitments because Hansard played Outspan Foster who played in the band.
Fast-forward 16 years.The band didn’t get back together,so,while working in his Dad’s vacuum cleaner repair shop,he starts to write his own songs and busk them on the Dublin streets.It’s here that he meets a like minded soul,and,slowly,they start to bond,due to their interest in music.
Both are nursing broken hearts and unrealised dreams.They collaborate in their songwriting and end up in a recording studio laying down tracks.All songs are original and performed by our 2 leading artists.
Without a doubt,this is the BEST “date movie” this year! Loadsa great Irish humour,cracking tunes and like-able,every-day charachters.

which is the better format/medium and does the physical size of cds spoil the overall effect of album/single artwork? making them less esthetically pleasing?:cool: 😎 😎

This is an oft-asked question.IMHO,it depends on the quality of the original recordings and the quality of the re-play system.

Yes I remember the wrestling too, something to watch on a cold wet saturday afternoon when we couldn’t go out trainspotting or building dens.
The ring surface must have made the drums sound amazing.

AFAIKR…….drums not miked,guitars only one amp each.One step up from a Church Hall.BUT It sounded loads better than our transistor radios,Dansette record players or Dad’s stereo-gramme.The whole set probably only lasted 45 mins !.

Now explain to me why he did it, given away in one of Murdoch’s papers too, can’t figure it out, bit the bullet and bought it meself though.

Anyone seen the Kinks, saw them at the Nottingham Palais about 1974, they were amazing…

1.For same reason Prince “gave away” his latest album in The Mail on Sunday a few weeks ago.To get his music into as many homes as possible,many of which wouldn’t even contemplate forking out hard cash for the album in their local record shop.This may inspire people unfamiliar with the artist to listen to,and maybe buy back catalogue material,and instill an interest in future releases.Not forgetting the payment made by the paper (in Prince’s case,it was half a million pounds) directly to the artist,bypassing any record company rake-off.

2.I was still at school,it was in 1965 at Eltham Baths,made famous by the wrestling broadcasts on ITV ( remember Jackie Pallo,Mick MacMannas etc ?).They performed on the wrestling ring but without the ropes and corner posts etc.

Got the latest 10 track album from Ray Davies (ex Kinks) which was given away in Sunday’s Times.It’s called Working Man’s Cafe and is a welcome return to catchy tunes from one of Britain’s best tunesmith’s.
