Was gonna post a couple of my thoughts on films that I’ve seen recently,but I’m holding off because of a couple of negative posts against me.
On my past “interactions” with Robbo,who usually deletes his “silly” posts as soon as possible after getting a reaction,I’m not surprised to see his two posts still here.Robbo is just another forumite on this board,nothing more,and is entitled to his opinion.Shame he doesn’t contribute to this thread so we could asses his choice of films and the way he reviews them.
Once information is released to the public domain,it is freely usable,as long as the user makes no monetary reward.My posts,which I will continue with-unless regular posters ask me not to-will include my thoughts and various additions from other reviews I come across.

Ever seen Blade Runner ? Of course you have,probably loads of times,but if you couldn’t quite understand a certain scene,or have questions about the music,IMDB have got it all sorted here

Philadelphia (1993)
This film caused a bit of a ruckas when released back in 1993 and succeeded in taking a deep look at a new kind of discrimination that grew as AIDS became more prevalent in the minds of Joe Public and how some peoples hatred,not dislike,but downright hatred towards gays got even more fueled as the new disease became a harsh and frightening reality in the world.
Tom Hanks,one of my favorite actors is superb.His casting as a neutral figure,with none of the flamboyant and stereotypical homosexual characters that occur in,say The Birdcage,shows a careful concern for political correctness,and,the way he is around his lover is remarkably chaste.It gives Hanks room to develope his character,and his decent,sympathetic performance won him the first of two consecutive Best Actor Oscars.
Denzil Washington more than earns his pay-cheque,portraying a fiercely hetrosexual lawyer who makes a point of standing up for the oppressed.He is essentially homophobic but he is also against persecution.
The scene where Hanks opens up his homosexual world to Washington by playing a favorite aria is particularly clever.Arguably,the horror of death from AIDS has been sanitized for popular consumption,but,nevertheless it is a brave and commendable effort.
The pacing and structure of the film are designed by director Jonathan Demme to treat the viewer as the jury.As a viewer,you are asked to think about how you feel not just about AIDS,but how you feel about gay people.The arguments are taut and compelling.

When john Wayne called a cowboy “pardner” he never imagined it might be shorthand for “partner”..this queer eye for the cowboy starring Australia’s Heath Ledger will have you squirming in your seat…one for the limp wristed give it a miss

They’re shepherds Steve,not cowboys.I posted my thoughts when I first caught this film at the pictures.
Looking back,this is a cracking film.Brokeback Mountain is a conventional,beautiful,and tragic love story-that just happens to be between two men.For a Biblical reference,see the connection David had with Johnathan in 1 Samuel 19-20.
It’s worth noting what,exactly,you’re reacting to:a love that has been made to knuckle under to society’s design.

Old blood and guts John Wayne does what he does best..chewing baccy and shooting guns as a Green beret colonel leading his men in a do or die battle in Vietnam..i never get tired of this movie

Ichi The Killer(2001).
Seems ages since I’ve seen an Asian horror.I’d heard about this Japanese film ages ago and when I saw this un-cut (2hr 9min) Special Edition was available,I got out the plastic.

“All events and characters in this film are entirely sick and any resemblance to persons living or dead is a sad coincidence.”

The story– A top mobster disapperes,along with 3 million Yen,so his number 2 sets out to find him.Sounds simple doesn’t it.Not so! This number 2 LOVES inflicting pain on anyone who gets in his way,just as much as he LOVES pain inflicted on himself! Eventually,he’s on the trail of a killer named Ichi,who,in reality,is a helpless cry-baby who becomes the ultimate killer,in a second-rate super hero costume,only when under hypnotic instruction from a vengeful rival.
Director Takashi Miike is famous for pushing the limits and this film is no different.Here’s some of the gore you can expect.Rooms full of bodies so mangled or dismembered the blood drips from the ceiling.Slicing of tongues and other parts of the body.Brutal beatings. But I’ll leave the extra-special stuff for you to see for yourself.
Opps,forgot to mention that this is also a black comedy,kind of tongue in cheek humour (think Evil Dead)
This is a film for “gore hounds” only.You have a choice of English subtitles or an English dubbed track.
Not a film to watch with the wife and kids.You have been warned.

Steve,I think the other POW’s deserve a mention here.The great Eric Sykes,the magnificent John LeMesurier,the uncomparable Stanley Baxter and the superb Leslie Phillips.
This is one of those typically British Sunday after-noon films that my Mum and Dad settletled down to after a full Sunday roast (with me doing the washing-up).
JRJ is superb,the tree-dangling scene is cracking 😀 .
