One of the last “swords and sandles” films made with “a cast of thousands” using real people.
I saw this film today at The Picturehouse in good old Greenwich.It was shown in the original 70mm print and 6 channel (pre Dolby or DTS or SDDS) soundtrack.Apart from 2 others,I had a 150 seat movie theatre to myself:D
For the life of me,I can’t remember seeing this film before,either at the pictures or on telly but,boy,am I glad I did.I have seen 70mm presentations 3 times before,all at Leicester Square,and I believe this is a first for Greenwich:D
This is the film Gladiator ripped off:mad: .Does this sound famillar……Ceasar’s fave General battles the Germans.He beats them.Ceasar decides to make him,who just happens to be a close friend of his son and the lover of his daughter,his heir to the throne of Rome.Ceasar is murdered,the bad son becomes Ceaser and proceeds to turn the glory of Rome into a decadent party.The efforts of our hero and his lover to keep the old Ceaser’s dream of a noble and republican Rome are continually thawarted by the new Ceasar,who sends our hero back to Germany.
It all ends up with huge battle sceenes,dancing in the streets of Rome,burning martyrs,and,of course,the “mano-a-mano” between our hero and the bad Ceasar.Yet another case of Hollywood re-vamping an old story.Why am I not surprised:rolleyes: .
Looking at this film from today’s pov;maybe a few sceenes were a bit too long.The music score was,at times,a bit over the top.BUT as far as the acting is concerned,it was top-notch.

Just a couple of observations……
At Primary School we were given,every day,a cod liver oil capsule and a third of a pint-bottle of milk.We had swimming,football for boys and netball for girls,and PT every week.School dinners was compulsory,unless you had a note from your Mum.It was always a plastic beaker of water,meat and two veg plus an afters.As far as I can remember,there were no chubby kids in my class.
At Secondary School,things started to change.We were still supplied the milk but this was optional.Some had none whilst others had several.Swimming,football and PT was as before.Smoking was introduced behind the cloakrooms,as was the freedom to have school dinners or hit the town’s (Woolwich) local cafe’s for a bacon sarnie,mug of tea and a couple of tunes on the juke box.
Early telly was a choice of BBC or ITV,both in black and white.The earliest program I can remember watching was Muffin The Mule (something you would get arrested for today 😉 ).But seeing as there was ONLY two channels,the quality of programs was high.Play For Today,The Old Grey Whistle Test,That Was The Week That Was and,of course,Ready,Steady Go spring to mind.
