EILAT CLASS SA’AR 5 MULTI-MISSION CORVETTES, ISRAEL
In the early 1980s, the Israeli Navy awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (formerly Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding) to supply three Sa’ar 5 Class corvettes for the Israeli Navy. The first of class, INS Eilat, was launched in February 1993, followed by INS Lahav in August 1993 and INS Hanit in March 1994.
COMMAND AND CONTROL
The Unified Combat System is integrated by IAI (Israel Aircraft Industries) MBT division, with Elbit (combat data systems) and Tadiran (communications systems) as major subcontractors. The ship’s combat system provides multiple offensive and defensive capabilities. Target, weapon status, and threat evaluation information is available to all fire control and launcher systems via the ship’s databus.
El-Op’s MSIS electro-optic surveillance and fire control system is fitted on the Eilat, which contains an 8–12 micron thermal imager, TV camera and laser rangefinder.
MISSILES
The ship’s anti-air capability is based on the Barak missile system developed by IAI and Rafael. Two 32-cell vertical launch systems are installed on the raised gun deck at the bow of the ship. The range of the Barak missile is 10km and it is armed with a 22kg warhead. It also has an anti-surface target capability.
The ship has two four-cell Boeing Harpoon missile launchers. The Harpoon surface-to-surface missile has a range of up to 130km. The speed is high subsonic and the warhead weighs 227kg.
The ship’s short to medium-range anti-ship missile is the IAI Gabriel II. There are eight launchers for the Gabriel II missile which uses dual mode semi-active and active radar homing with a 100 kg warhead. The range is from 6 to 36km and missile velocity is 0.6 Mach.
GUNS
The ship is equipped either a Raytheon/ General Dynamics Mk 15 Phalanx close-in weapon system (CIWS) or OTOBreda 76mm gun. Phalanx has a 20mm gun which can fire at 3,000 rounds/min and Ku-band search and tracking radar. Range is 1.5km.
TORPEDOES
The ship is fitted with six 324mm Mark 32 torpedo tubes for Alliant Techsystems Mark 46 torpedoes which have active and passive homing. They are armed with a 44kg warhead and range is 24km. The launch tubes are mounted in the superstructure about halfway along the length of the ship.
HELICOPTER
Airborne anti-submarine warfare capability is provided by the ship’s helicopter. The ship’s helicopter hangar can accommodate an H-665A Dauphin, Kaman SH-2F or Sikorsky S-76N helicopter.
COUNTERMEASURES
Countermeasures include the AN/SLQ-25 Nixie towed torpedo decoy system by Aerojet ElectroSystems, which seduces approaching torpedoes away from the ship. The Sa’ar 5 corvettes’ radar warning receiver Elisra NS-9003/9005 is also installed on the Israeli Navy Sa’ar 4 and Sa’ar 4.5 patrol craft. Three Elbit Deseaver stabilised chaff rocket launchers are mounted on the forward and aft towers.
SENSORS
The air search radar antenna is installed on the aft tower. The Elta EL/M-2218S air search radar operates in E/F bands. The 2D/3D radar antenna, the fire control director and the I-band navigation radar antenna are installed on the forward tower. The fire control radar is the I/J/K-band EL/M-2221 GM STGR from Elta.
The Sa’ar is equipped with Type 796 hull-mounted search-and-attack sonar, which operates at medium frequency and is supplied by EDO of New York. The ship’s towed sonar array is supplied by Rafael.
PROPULSION
The ship’s propulsion system is in a CODOG combined diesel or gas configuration. The two MTU 12V 1163 TB82 diesel engines are rated at 6,600hp. The GE LM 2500 gas turbine system is cross-connected and provides 30,000hp. The propulsion system drives two shafts. The propulsion system provides a maximum speed of 33 knots. The cruise speed on the diesel engines is 20 knots and the endurance is 4,000 nautical miles. A large twin rudder provides manoeuvrability at high speed and controllable reversible pitch (CRP) propellers at low speed.

Nice to see that both of you are reasonable on that point. As I said I do not doubt that there was damage to civilian properties and to civilians during the war.
The only train incident I know of, was the one with the released targeting video, which shows that a bridge was targeted, when suddenly a train appears on the bridge a second before impact. That is a tragedy for the involved people, but not a deliberate attack. At least not of the pilot flying the plane.
The Chinese embassy is something completely different. I think that it was deliberately targeted, but the Chinese tried something that could have influenced the war. So it something what I would call grey zone.
I never thought about the legal points to the war. The moral viewpoint is very difficult for me to judge, as living in a EU country I was filled up with TV stories of dead albanians etc. I think I´m much too far away to make any moral judgement on any side of the war.
Nevertheless I think the war was wrong from a political viewpoint. As far as I understand going to war to bring peace to a region means having a plan for after the war. But what we have now, is a Kosovo which can´t be returned to the serbian/montenegro state, but also can´t be given to Albania or be independent. This peace of land is a base for criminals (and terrorists) that operate in nearly all western countries. They sparked the trouble in Macedonia and I´m sure they will try to spread more trouble in the future. (That is when NATO withdraws) If Western politicians do not see that only strong neighbours (read Macedonia and Serbia/Montenegro) will be the way to stopp the aggession. Otherwise we might see a fundamentalistic muslem country in Europe in 10 years.
With that in mind I say the war was wrong.
I have very different opinions on Slovenia and partly Croatia as well. There I would say a great part of the aggression lay with the serbian troops / paras. But I won´t make any judgement on who did wrong and what, as I´m too far away from the actual happenings.

I do agree that these attacks were unjustified and a failure, as the curretn situation is much worse, but saying NATO would have attacked civilian targets deliberately is a bit over the line.
Just think of what would happen if that would be discovered by the press, most governments could take their hat.
Some damage to civilian buildings in unavoidable in a war, but saying that targets like hospitals were purposefully is too much. That is nothing more then Serbian national propaganda.

Yes, the ETA problem cannot be compared to Kosovo. The autonomy that the Basque people enjoy is extremly wide reaching and I´m sure most people there do not support terrorism. The ETA is a group of hardliners who follow at unrealistic dream without careing about civilian casualities. This is a terrorist group. Or does anyone believe that the basque people are surpressed in Spain ??
Most spanish regions enjoy a level of autonomy that could be a role modell for many countries.

Yet you must agree that we never saw 50 or so ETA fighters buried in a mass grave in a field in Spain. Or 20 IRA fighters burried in wood in northern Ireland. I have never seen pictures of Spanish army troops closing in a ETA stronghold with MBTs.
I´m not saying that the NATO operation was justified in any way, but you cannot compare the Kosovo problem to the ETA in Spain or the IRA in Northern Ireland. The Kosovo problem was simply much larger, there are no paramilitary terrorst groups in Spain. (at least not battalion sized forces with ATGM, mortars and HMGs)
The Kosovo terrorist are no freedom fighters (as there is freedom in Yugoslavia) they are a bunch of nationalists and criminals that want to build a greater Albania. People asspociated to that organisation are known as criminals in most western countries and they are extremly brutal in conducting their crimes. Considering that, it was a major fault of NATO to attack Yugoslavia to free that “bunch of criminals” from serbian surpression.

I totally agree, what I meant was that european press is focussing so much on the suffering Palestinians. No doubt that the girl should have been helped.
But the Israelis suffer too. I saw a report about a teenage Israeli gril who had surived 5 sucide attacks carried out by palestinians since she was born. But these stories never make it to the headlines.
I would never stand up and have an opnion which side is the bad guys, as both are suffering and making the other suffer. I just find that all outside countries should be carefull to take a neutral postion when examing what is happening there.

I think this time you are going to far. No one doubts that there have been civilian casualities in Jenin, but calling it a massacre and comparing it to the ethnic massacers of Bosnia and Kosovo is way over the line. The stories about dying babies is mostly typical liberal european propaganda crap. European press loves to makes the Israelis the bad guys. I guess there is a tendency to support the “weak” in that conflict.
As you know from the other thread about the topic, I´m not supporting the style of military operations Israel is conducting, but we should be very careful to make judgements about what happened, as I would not totally rule out the possibility that terrorist used civilians as human shields or attacked the Israelis with accepting civilians casualities.
We should stay away from believing everything the PA tells us.

I consider our argument setteled now. I was just shocked as I understood you in the way, that you thought bad about every person that did not serve in the military. Because I have not been in the military, as I served my time in the civil disaster relief organisation in germany, as I´m a civil engineer and could (and can) be of more use there. This sevice called (Technisches Hilfswerk in German = something like technical support agency in english) is used for disaster relief in Germany and aboard. In a wartime situation it would be used to suuport the Bundeswehr, building bunkers and trenches, repairing bridges etc. (I took an additional course on air defence and aircraft recognition while being there, cause we would get some weapons in a war time scenario)
So I hope you would not say that I did not serve my country.
