if Dunkeswell allowed me to search.. i gladly would for them, and others i imagine, with magnetometers.. 😀

but with the humdrum of life i dont have the time, also what am i to do with tons of liberator, but if someone else wants to act on it, or want me to help in a search no problem

even a Air Vice Marshall friend i used to know said he flew over dunkeswell, and he thought he say a outline of what was or used to be runway , but couldnt be as it was just inside/outside the perimeter.. of the old airfield, .. could that have been the elusive trench ??

if a gang of us can get permission i for one would be interested in going and having a look ,with my magnetometer :D:);)

    Re Drawings..

I hear BAC have been compiling a archive, just been on the phone, i wonder if with luck on my side, any cockpit drawings can be found.. worth asking…

I was told by a BAC filton worker about 10 years ago, that there was a old building on the far side of the airfield, filled from top to bottom with drawings from various types… oh to be allowed to have a look in there.. Hopefully its still there, and not been destroyed 😮

Thats why i wouldnt dream of asking a museum to make a mould from a restored airframe, but there are some in need of restoration and in bits, (complete airframes)

that the proccess wouldnt damage, i think going near a nice restored example to do this process, is a big no no .even if when its done properly it should leave no damage.??

if you look on demobbed, the airframe condition and types ,just for a instance would be like the following… surely if done properly it couldnt damage them.

heres some examples below.. aircraft i wonder could be used as masters, and is purely a “Just for instance”

RH746 brigand, “I would’nt dream of asking, but she is in need of restoration.”
ID-16 and ID-23 hunters at beuavechain

    seahawks wf299, or wv798,
meteor cockpit WF877 at duxford, ( I know its a complete airframe, but its just the cockpit shown in the photograph)
    Wn411 Gannet cockpit section

you see the idea, planes in need of restoration, prior to there restoration, and just the cockpit, area,

I am not making the suggestion that the aircraft stated above in anyway should be approached and asked to do such a task, i purely note them above from there photographed condition on demobbed website. :D:)

I imagine it is quite a time consuming process to make these replica instruments.. and parts, i for one am very impressed, and wish i had the know how to make parts like these, especially for a replica of a non existent airframe, it certainly would fill the gap when trying to recreate a extinct type, for instance the brigand, i am sure many gauges, parts are still available, but some would be extremely expensive, if at all be able to be found and like Tony says, its a good stop gap until a real one comes along.. for instance.. if i was to actually start a brigand,1/4 cockpit, ie from front of seat to just in front the windshield, apart from a few instruments i think most of it would have to be replicated. you tell me where i can find a original bristol brigand control grip/column.. or flight panel, ??

i suppose it boils down to, if i can get real pieces i will, but if i cant afford them,or more importantly they are non existent.. making replica’s are the only option.. and will give the desired “Look” needed to proceed with the project ..

I suppose it would end up a mix/match of replica and original, but in the end its still some wonderful work producing such interesting items.. I hope to use the same process with Brigand parts, it may not be real, but it could certainly fill a void, and would be within budget i could afford .:);)

i was told many years ago of a mothballed lincoln, buried at Locking weston super mare, … and the man who told me.. a old chap who was involved in aircraft decommissioning at weston in the 50s with a private firm…

I wish i had asked him exactly “WHERE” in locking,

probably here say.. then theres the old story of 3 liberator fuselages buried at Dunkeswell.. ive heard this story from more than one person,.. and a elderly american gent told a well known friend that indeed there was he witnessed it when he was stationed there, story was they were offered to the RAF, who didnt want them, so they dug a very long deep trench on the edge of the airfield, cut the main spars, removed some spares, took the wings off and pushed them into the trench no doubt going over the top with a tracked machine no doubt.. I’ve been intrigued by this story since told it about 10 years ago.can anyone verify this story ??

    thanks for your advice..:D

i looked on the net but couldnt find anything really useful, do you know of any books etc that have a step by step guide ??..

I had the realization that being cockpits from real aircraft are very few and far between these days, i thought i could “make” the cockpit pod ,from using a real aircraft as a master to copy, make the mould, probably in 3 sections, and then using these moulds to make a nice fiberglass cockpit shell, which is the part cockpiteers need to start with or eventually have to build a cockpit layout.

once i have a nicely finished small cockpit pod, would be a good start, just the front cockpit, no nose, just the bit you sit in, and build up from there .:).

Thank you to the people who highlighted this to me. I already have two of these canopies….. 3 would just be greedy! 😉

I am very suprised there are that many in existence…;)

Its a wonder what old pieces are lying in sheds forgotten over the years.. might even be a brigand windscreen somewhere, or parts, or any other extinct bird ,amazing what turns up on ebay sometimes 😀

    i watch these videos.

and its enough to make me weep, .. i know you cant save em all, its a shame everything is about money these days, not a rant, just seems that way, especially when you don’t have much in the way of money,

I wonder apart from the modern electrical instrumentation added in recent years to the VC10 , just what usable spares there will be, ??, even the cockpits, to strip them down in a few days to a bare shell, which could take many a year for a museum to rebuild, seems so harsh, still its the way of the world i suppose 🙁

heres a vid of the vc10 first flight.
