The cockpit of Whirlwind XK907 was languishing in the dump area of the Midland Air Museum.
And there’s a Wessex panel on eBay… Link
.
Thanks for the Link XM692,
I did see the panel, and contacted them regarding a Whirlwind one, (i missed it sold 3 weeks ago 🙁 )
truth is as much as i am very tempted to buy the panel of the wessex,(bit pricey) Until I have a cockpit ,It would be daft of me to buy it, what happens if i buy the Panel, and then a Whirlwind comes along, or Vice Versa, so I am stuck at the mo as what to do,
Just wondered also , are Parts for the Whirlwind /Wessex Hard to find,Ie Cockpit parts, If i got hold of one,I would want to turn it back to its earliest RAF/RN Form, ie Whirlwind 1950s, ,Wessex Late 50s Early 60s,, are the instruments Hard to find from that era for Helicopters ???
I wasn’t there at the time either. Fortunately for me, my Father was too young to have served before the end of the war, though in a Civil Defence capacity, at the age of 14, he sat on a hill and watched Coventry burn. Two days later, he was driven to that city to help deliver supplies. Walsall itself was lucky in terms of the bombing. A stick of bombs fell on the rugby club pitch. Removed an awful lot of slates and the fear almost certainly killed my Uncle’s Airedale. One stick hit a factory about two hundred yards from where I am sitting now. Several men died, my Grandfather was involved in digging them out. He came home and didn’t speak for a week, and this was a man who served throughout the Great War.
I’ve said it before, I’m a simple man with simple views. What strikes me is that those who are now prepared to vilify the men of Bomber Command and their military and political masters are strangely silent regarding those who brought about the war. Does it not occur to people like Peter Garner that if Germany and her Allies had stayed within their borders there would have been no necessity for war? Germany fought the war to its fullest capability, in fact going far beyond any of the accepted conventions of war. Why do people feel the need to revile those who fought against evil and for the freedoms we have now? Why is there such shock expressed against Harris and Bomber Command and so little against Goering and the Luftwaffe for their bombing of British cities? Isn’t it common sense that if someone is hitting you with a stick you retaliate with a bigger stick?
I am thankful every day of my life that such men existed and were prepared to act as they did.

as ive been blithering about Whirlwinds, Ive also been looking into Wessex, and imagine the “Cab” from one of those would be a nice “SMALL” project,
I never realised they flew as early as 1958, which has impressed me, Now there MUST be a Cab from a Wessex, if not a Whirlwind that could be saved, I wonder if its worth approaching Preddaneck (?? i think thats how you spell it:o) as the have a few dotted on there side , all be it i imagine smashed to bits by now 🙁
I would be interested in swapping these bits for Westland bits , the wessex is interesting as its american equivelant served in Vietnam, and i have a interest in that conflict,
ANY ideas any one, :D, are Parts easy to source for the whirlwind/Wessex ??
Vampire T11 Bits XE995
Heres a gaggle of parts I have no use for, and wondered if they were of use to any of you, I might be interested in a swap, 😀
would rather they go to someone who could use them,
.Nope, Bloody PC wont let me download it, How the hell do you down load your own personal Pictures to this website !!!
any advice PLEASE
I got a nice piece of fabric too, But not as old as yours,
I recovered it after Boz was involved in a dead landing/ crash with this Jungmann, which I had spent 3 years helping restore from nothing, under supervision of my best mate Paul Childs, he gave me it, it was taken from the wings which were smashed and i have framed it,
Its the german cross from the wing, looks nice framed.
i will try a post a pic of the plane now, Thanks to Flightline for such a wonderful Pic .
GReat I Managed to get a pic on here at last,
I will try a photograph the fabric, and put this on here too,
I would love to know more about your Jenny though, anyway we can find its history,
My Gran always felt the same about the “Forgotten War” ,
she remembers many men coming home, to no welcome what so ever, no street parties, nothing, those lads that finally got back from the far east fighting the Japs, didnt get much if any recognition,
the war in Japan was practically swept under the carpet, the many POWs who suffered, and Many still suffering today,
the Japanese were a fanatical enemy who would not be stop at nothing for there emperor God,
Yet so many Lefty Tree Huggers blatantly shout that Hiroshima was Wrong.
yet at the time ,and even today many people think it saved More lives than if it was never dropped, even Japanese lives ,because if we had to fight on the japanese mainland ,I am sure every Man woman and child would have fought ferociously to the death, against the allied forces, causing More loss of life ,allied and Axis than if the bomb was never dropped.
Of all the items I treasure more than most of my posseisions are my Uncles Chindit Hat ,which he used in Burma, with the Green Howards, and my Uncle Reg’s Medals, paperwork, photo album ,red cross letters, as he served on HMS Prince of wales, and spent the rest of the war in a Jap POW camp, dying 2 days before the war ended, Personaly being selfish for my family, I wish they had dropped it 6 months earlier, then perhaps my Uncle and many like him would have managed to survive:(
I am sure at the time it was seemed as the best option, against a strong willed military machine,
I would say “Hind sight” is a Wonderful thing !
we cannot right the wrongs of the past, But we can learn from them,
how far do you go back, ??, Churchill and the Galipoli campaign. General Haig
and the Somme,??
Slavery in the 17th century ??,
i see no problem in discussing it, But these people who scream “Murderer” well they were not there, and do not have the fears,Culture,or mindset of that generation, what RIGHT do we have today to Pour Scorn on Historical figures who Did there best in a terrible situation ??:(
Ref posts # 4 & 7………………the engines will be Gipsies.
Planemike
oK my spelling is crap. :o,
But you all knew what i meant :p;):D

If you are looking for a radial project I have a Cheetah crankcase and a few pots as a starter, you will stand more chance sourcing parts for one of these. it has history too
