To be honest I’d like to see Edinburgh secure new routes, it’s good for business and the economy in Scotland as a whole. I wouldn’t however like to think that Glasgow Airport will suffer because of Edinburgh growth, especially when to a certain extent that growth is artificial.
Ultimately I think GLA should get out of BAA and be run perhaps by a body with the airport’s best and exclusive interests at heart. Something like the Strathclyde Passenger Transport executive (SPT) which has done such a good job in co-ordinating and improving the surface transport links in the region.
The Manchester Airport Group or whatever it’s called, is another good model of a succesful airport operating outwith BAA. The demographics of the west of Scotland are good so I think further expansion at GLA in terms of routes is viable.
When I was at GLA taking pictures yesterday, I looked at the new (ish) international pier and realised I’d only left the UK from GLA once. Every other time has been via MAN, LGW or DUB and if you go to these airports you’ll meet plenty other west Scots who can’t fly internationally direct from GLA.
The trouble with BAA is that it has too many nests to feather and if GLA is going to become marginalised as a regional leisure airport with few international scheduled links, then I think it’s time to go it alone.
