PA474 was in Guy Gibson’s AJ-G scheme during 1983.
Spitfires IIa P7350 was SH-D of 64 Sqn,
Vb AB910 was XT-M of 603 Sqn (Richard Hillary),
PR.XIX PM631 was AD-C of 11 Sqn ?
and
PR.XIX PS853 was painted in a PR blue scheme but was grounded.
Hurricanes IIc LF363 was VY-X of 85 Sqn (allover black)
and
IIc PZ865 was ‘Last of the Many’
The flight also operated Devon VP981 in a silver and blue scheme with the legend Battle of Britain Memorial Flight along the fuselage.
She will look fantastic with the Hind and maybe the 2 Nimrods from Dux, can’t wait for the Fury:D
Who’s Hawker Fury is that, maybe we should start fitting ours over here with a yankie lump up front, great pix keep em coming:)
Wasn’t it the Flycatcher thats in the FAAM Yeovilton Moggie ?
John Fairey was one of those great old display pilots from the early 70’s if not earlier, he seems to have had a great passion for the aviation heritage movement as well as having a rich family history in aviation, this is a very sad loss indeed but if your number is up you would like to go doing something you love so much.
Blue skies John.
At Cosford today with my daughters cub pack when Spitfire XIX PS915 flew in for tomorrows veterans day parade.
I had just arrived home around 15.30 when a friend phoned to say that a griffon ? Spit was in the Uttoxeter/Marchington area, a quick look at my BBMF/LLA appearence list said Marchington St. Peter. Does anyone know was it PM631 or was my friend mistaken and it was a Merlin Spit? Who was flying it and who was flying PS915 at Cosford it looked like Ian Smith?
The pilot could have closed the throttle, I heard something similar on the BBMF’s Mk.IIa Spitfire P7350 after a hangar break into the circuit at Coningsby. As a mater of interest she was being flown by Grp/Capt Mark Swan.
If that is masking on the rear fuselage it could be for some wing leaders personel codes, the French scheme was refreshingly different but yes she does look well.Looks like an Italy 1945 scheme to me possibly Wilfred Duncan Smiths Spit although that was a Mk.VIII.
Thanks Southern Cross for correcting me, I watched your display this year as I normally give it half of my attention, I must say well done, a great display and I loved your entrance from crowd rear, I am eating humble pie somewhat as I thought Cosford 09 was a compete success, The Vulcan was a sight to behold, Parky displayed Spitfire PR XIX PM631 with gusto, Anthony Hodgeson displayed his Tr IX very well (one of the best sounding Spits I’ve heard) but my display of the day was Peter Teichman in his P-40M Kittyhawk he gives the airshow public real value for money. Well done Cosford you shut me up and it shows you don’t need fast jets galore at every RAF display.:o;)
Thanks XH668 we saw it last year at Cosford, what a beautifully turned out aircraft:)
It’s just got to be THAT yellow colour ;):p
A bit thin on RAF hardware Typhoon, Hawk and er, er, er, I’m getting stuck now. No harrier, no tornado f-3 or gr4, no nimrod, no herc, no vc-10 flypast like duxford had the other week, no mention of the RAF demontration display that seemed a sucess for the last couple of years. A nice list of warbirds and the odd smattering of early jets excluding the promised vulcan. Is this still a RAF airshow (one of only 3 left)? If so the RAF participation is getting less ans less it hardly does it’s job as an advertising event for the modern air force.:mad
p.s. what is the fixation with yak 52 formation teams year after year????
Didn’t the BBMF’s Hurricane IIc LF363 wear Nicholsons colours as GN-A and earlier Tom Neil’s GN-F? Both schemes were very similar and looked very authentic. LF363 was painted as GN-A when it crashed at Wittering in September 1991.
Thanks for correcting me Roobarb:o
Don’t know about where she is appearing this year but I suppose the Major will be chief pilot again. She is now based as part of the Waddington flying club at Waddo.
Is it right that AR213 now flies with AR501’s old DH prop and spinner and that AR501 is having a Dowty Rotol fitted ?
