I am aware of the features of Shtil and Aster respectively. You suggested Aster 15 en lieu of Shtil VL. Both are roughly in the same range category but Aster 15 has a lot of other advantages as mentioned.

Now, IMHO, if IN adopts Aster 15 then a logical development would be to next go from Aster 15 to Aster 30 (as part of PAAMS or embedded in some other system e.g. with Israeli and/or Russian MF radars). But then, if IN does do that, then it doesn’t make sense to sink money into developing Barak-2 no more. After all, what does it add? Yet it appears that India is getting into Barak-2 development. Why?

Also, with Aster readily available for some time now, why was it not incorporated into P15A or the initial P17? It wouldn’t have been all that difficult to make the switch. Instead, the first P17 continues the SRL Shtil and P15A will use VL Shtil.

This still doesn’t rule out Aster, but I’ld expect at least one batch of P17A with VL Shtil and a switch to Aster not sooner than batch P17B (last 3-6 hulls of 12 total).

Last February,at the Aero India air show 2005, MBDA and BDL announced the signing of an MoU, to set up a joint venture later this year, which both the firms hope would also include collaboration for Mica/Aster air-to-air missile. The way that was phrased indicates that this is by no means certain yet, and could be either missile or both. Signing an MoU does signify a committment (incidentally mainly dealing with further development of Milan ATGW) but AFAIK it is not a binding agreement.

The P25A is intented as a patrol ship in peacetime and as a cheap force multiplier in wartime: in ASh role it would operate as part of a larger group of ships which provide AAW cover.

As for Aster, while it’s possible that IN will get Aster it doesn’t make sense to me? Aster is an improvement over Shtil (incl. over the VL version), surely. However, I fail to see why IN would buy Aster 15/30 (30km/80km ranges respectively) and develop Barak-2 (70km range) at the same time. If they are serious about Barak-2, it would be more cost effective to build on systems currently in service (i.e. Shtil SRL> Shtil VL; Barak-1 > Barak-2).

Of course this assumes Barak 1 and 2 are related. When you call a missile Barak-2, I expect there will be some commonality with Barak-1. But is there is little or no commonality between Barak-1 and -2, then it may well be that Barak-1 is a stop-gap and VL Mica will eventually replace Barak-1 and Kashtan for close in work. EITHER Barak-2 OR Aster-30 would then replace Shtil SRL/VL, but you would not get BOTH Barak-2 AND Aster-30. Given that you have Aster 15 and Aster 30, it would not be cost effective to adopt only Adter-15 and Barak-2 instead of Aster-30.

Over at CMF folks are claiming Tu22M. However, how can we be sure it even is an airplane, it could just as wel be a drone.

For comparison, here are Mig23, Mig25, Tu128 and Tu22M (but it could just as well be J7 or JH7)

VL Mica would be good for the project 28 corvette that IN is planning; reduces the number of sensors and hence space needed.

Hope you can find a better one, Incat has some nice concepts.
Found this on Incats design and research page http://www.incat.com.au/product_fs.html

The LCC(X) (SEAFRAME concept) is a deadweight 1000k tonner, it is basically a longer hull version of the HSV2 models.

    112m long
    40 knots
    350 Troops
    5 x fixed wing (JSF)
    2 x UCAV
room for 2-3 Seahawks depending on task
    Ski ramp
    2 lifts
seaparate vehicle deck for 113’s ASLAVs,
angled drive on ramp (as per HSV2)

It’s an LPD-LHA hybrid designed to carry a flight of F35B’s and a helo detachment and has had some positive reviews from the US Office of Force Transformation (which is headed by a USN Vice Adm)

In the 1990s, the navy purchased three Eilat (SA’AR V) class guided-missile corvettes (FFLGs) from what is now Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Ingalls Operations Shipyard, in the United States. Israel’s Ministry of Defense has opened negotiations with the same yard for the construction of up to five modified (SA’AR V) Class. These ships could help establish an offensive long-range force. They would be augmented by the procurement of additional submarines. Aircraft Industries Ltd. (IAI)/Rafael Barak-2 anti-air warfare defense missile will form the basis for the SA’AR V’s Next-Generation Defense Missile NGDM. India is considering cooperating with Israel on the production of Barak 2 navy missiles.

Wanshan , The Aster is definately as better system than Shtil-1

A deal has been signed with MBDA for a new Missile system for P-17 class of ships , also Navay is looking at the EMPAR Radar to be fitted on P-17 class of ships. I dout its Aster-30 one would require EU clearence for it , Most likely its Aster-15 , But later down the line Aster-30 could be procured.

The issue is not so much whether one system is better than the other but rather what advantages Aster offers over Shtil VL at what price: is the qualitative difference big enough to warrant a) the price difference plus b) the costs associated with introducing yet another missile system to the IN inventory. It’s not just about capability, which is why I introduce some context.

Is there anybody on the forum that would be in a position and willing to go take pics if the Kuz were to visit Portsmouth?

Mmm, like P15A, I would expect P17A to have VL Shtil rather than Aster. Seems rather a waste to have only P15A equiped with VL Shtil and then to switch already to Aster. That is, unless P17 and/or possibly Talwar class and possibly P15 were to be converted to VL Shtil during their MLU. If that’s the case, a version of P17 with the 80km Aster 30 would be a very good complement to existing ships, adding a further layer of air defense. Don’t know of the 30km Aster 15 would offer that much over and above VL Shtil to be worth the (what I expect to be) extra cost relative to VL Shtil.

Crusader is said to have been a great beer hauler (instead of 20mm ammo cases).

Are they are supersonic or subsonic drones?? Wonder whether that sequence of a target being shot down by the FM-90N was one of the above drones……..

    Plus:

    1: 525…..HQ-7 tracking something (I bet its a cute as$….. 😀 :p )…..
2: Not sure whether this is new or old….

Well, the launcher is trained but it she’s tracking then she’s not using the FC radar associated with HQ7 but rather the rear radar associated with AK630s and the front radar normally associated with main gun and SSMs.
