Agree totally. It looks simply horrible π
Quite agree that it is so good that you cover the less “glamorous” trades in your episodes, Dave.
With a bit of interest being shown in your latest episode I thought I’d add this page from an article by Flt Lt J. A. Byth RAAF which describes the re-construction Of Butterworth by Australia’s No. 2 Airfield Construction Squadron. The article appears in Air BP no.1 of 1956.

The answers all begin with K! – 1. Kid 2. Kidnapped. 3. Kenneth Walker.
and Kidnapped was written by Robert Louis Stevenson and Roswell was named after Brigadier Gen. Walker. He (Walker that is) was shot down over Rabaul which is where RLS’s piano ended up after having been bought in Samoa by some “Queen” who wasn’t really.
And if that is even vaguely near the answer I will be very, very surprised!! But, hey, good fun Sq/L Scramble π
Yes, it wasn’t yesterday lol π It was so good to see the Student at Strathallan – I think it was the only jet to take off from there. It gave a really nice display. I admit I am hoping that the Youtube poster might come up with Part 2 soon!
Hi Colin,
Yes, the first Strathallan display was on 22nd September, 1973. I wasn’t at that one either but, according to the local newspaper report, it featured a Jet Provost pair, Chipmunks, Beaver, Islander as well as the Collection’s Spitfire T.9, Hurricane and Anson (VM360). The Klemm in the video I linked to was present that year too.
Lovely film! So nice to see the colour footage. Well found and thanks for posting π
Yes it is Duncan Simpson, Hooligan. I’m not sure anyone else ever flew the Hurricane while it was at Strathallan.
Funnily enough, the Junkers wasn’t actually on the Airshow programme. It had been purchased by Dolph Overton and arrived at Strathallan the day before the airshow for some preparatory work prior to its ferry flight to Florida. A very nice surprise addition! The full programme for the weekend was –

A few names here – http://www.56thfightergroup.co.uk/history.htm
29th March 1944
2 B-24s collide during their group formation and crash at Henham, a few miles from the 56th’s base at Halesworth. During rescue operations the bomb load of one Liberator explodes and 6 men from the airfield are killed. Among them are 62nd FS ace Stanley βFatsβ Morrill and enlisted man Benny Cala. Also lost are Sgt Joseph Trembly of the 33rd Service Group, Lyle Densmore and Richard Weigland of the 2010th FF/Plt and one member of the 1181st MP unit, Tennys Wilcox.
Very nice too…both of them! π
Hi Olly,
Have you searched for him on Flight Archive? Quite a bit of info there.
I was quite surprised recently to read that some of the Hudsons based at Leuchars in the early part of the war went into action without the turret installed. I guess they would have been fitted at a later date though.
The Airplane (sic) Glamping website is already up and running though they’re not expecting to have it “transformed” before next summer –
The Twin Pin has now arrived at the farm near Stirling where it is to be converted for glamping. An article with a couple of pics in today’s Dundee Courier –
Lovely! Really nice to hear the Mercury has returned “home” π

So, if I went up to Strathallan tomorrow and started peering in through hangar windows…
You would come away totally depressed, Meddle. Don’t do it if you’re hoping for a hangar full of lovely old aeroplanes. Besides I’ve already got the photos of the agricultural implements if you want them π
