Yes definitively Sq 257 . But nothing to do with Whirlwinds however !
Zorglub.
Thanks very much for the info, zorglub 🙂 Hadn’t heard of Squadron Leader Fokes so that made interesting though sad reading. Re the Whirlwinds, I can only assume that the gentleman concerned must have switched squadron at some point.
I am sure we can forgive the lack of wings this once.
Thanks Moggy – at least I sneaked a Heinkel in 🙂
I’ve been up that way so often to Knockhill racing circuit I can’t believe I haven’t popped in there at some point.
It’s so close ( maybe just a couple of miles) we could easily hear the action from the race track!
Any more pics of bus companies who might have been seen in Fife ?
Here you go, Baz. Expect some of these have plied their trade in or around Fife at some time –

At the far end of the site is Shed 47 http://www.shed47.org/ and part of the old railway which ran around the Stores Depot –

The Landowner is Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, 16th Duke of Hamilton
Then hopefully an interest in aviation still runs in the blood. Present duke is a grandson of the 14th Duke, Air Commodore Douglas Douglas-Hamilton – http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usbiography/d/douglasdouglashamilton.html
It was certainly still there when we visited 3 weeks ago. Not looking so good though –

Welcome back RT,
I think that is one of the Inland Aviation Company types. See the last photo on this page –

I’ve tried editing your photo a bit to get more detail – it looks like it may be an eagle emblem on the front fuselage but I can’t be sure.
Recently rediscovered this old photo of Pitts G-OODI which I took at Strathallan in 1984.

As for your 2nd map unless you have a Harrier, no go.
Just ignore me -it was getting late! Thought I was looking at the remnants of an older airfield there but, reading through the website I linked to again, it appears that those coordinates relate to the wartime base for the flak; signals and other support units instead. Sorry if caused any confusion 🙁
The info on the following website http://www.ww2.dk/Airfields%20-%20Germany%20%5B1937%20Borders%5D.pdf relates to a slightly earlier time but may be of interest in that it gives Wiesbaden and Wiesbaden-Erbenheim as 2 separate locations. Using the map refs given they are/were situated like this –

Zooming in to Wiesbaden – possible remains? Unfortunately no Street-view of the area so hard to tell for sure.

Hi Schneiderman,
I’m risking total embarrassment here if I’m wrong but I think you may be looking at it upside down. If you rotate the photograph the writing becomes very Arabic like – what then looks like a capital J being the Arabic letter “laam” and the one that then looks like a reversed 3 being “3ayn”. Possibly written by someone lying on the pontoon?

The pilot certainly looks the part – a WWII veteran, I wonder?
My French is pretty rusty having being rarely used for many years lol but I’m fairly certain that the commentator says to the pilot at 3m30 “You were in the Battle of Britain and D-day” Sounded like he called him Pete (possibly Piet?).
A bit further searching found this video complete with sound –

Thanks all for your replies and suggestions. A definitive answer does seem very elusive. In the meantime for anyone interested I stumbled across this video on Pathe – sadly no sound.
