Air Enthusiast April 1974 states that VM360 ” spent some time at RAE Farnborough in 1949 “
    Bit vague I’m afraid.
    Retired from military use 1957.

Expect it will be some considerable time before East Fortune’s Beaufighter is fully restored. Pics from a couple of weeks ago –

A visit to the delightful Black Watch Museum in Perth unfortunately did not find any personal record of Lt Kirkaldy’s army service. The museum does not hold Personnel Records except a few they have had donated.

With regards to the Service No. supplied by Kev35, it seems there are standard numbers and ‘S’ numbers! So the number (S) 3834 in the records belongs to a Thomas Dickson which would mean that Lt. Kirkaldy must have been plain 3834 – the difference is that the ‘S’ numbers had signed up “for the duration” of the war while the non-S had signed up for a fixed term of either 3,5 or 7 years. Seems this was pretty unusual in wartime though not unheard of.

Most men from Dundee/Broughty Ferry signed up in the Kirkcaldy Depot or in Perth.

I wasn’t able to get any information for the time of Lt. Kirkaldy’s Territorial service as most of what was available relates to the 1st Battalion which was the official battalion stationed in India – the others were rotated in and out. Climate/humidity and lack of paper meant records haven’t survived so all I could get was that K.S.K would certainly have signed up in this country for his Territorial Service and the 4/5th was an amalgamated battalion from Dundee and Angus because of the number of men killed at the battle of Loos in 1915.

You’ve certainly put in a lot of effort there, DCK. Unfortunate that nothing has turned up – yet. Been trying to think of other possible people to try but I don’t suppose the likes of the NHS would give any details. Nursing Homes? – so many it would be hard to know where to begin. Her name and the population of the area make it a bit like the proverbial needle in the haystack. Sad to think too that had Major Lundsten not been lost and their marriage had gone ahead, you would be looking for someone with a more uncommon name.

Not yesterday then 🙂 It has changed a wee bit since then. I’m not very far from Perth myself if it’s difficult for you to get to. I’d be more than happy to help though it would probably be a few weeks before I’d be able to.

Well done bazv – your friend must surely be impressed with the amount of info you have managed to gather together on Lt Kirkaldy. He had quite a life, didn’t he? Would be worthy of a movie or tv drama at least!

Just a side note re. Loch Doon mentioned above. According to an old Scotland Scanned it hosted the Seaplane training Squadron circa 1916 – 17 but this was closed due to an unacceptable accident rate. The School of Aerial Gunnery
was shelved owing to “awful conditions”.

Good luck to them,if they want it i hope they get it.

To all who have expressed similar thoughts – can I please ask that, should the vote be Yes, spare a thought for us Scots who voted No, not because of any financial considerations or suchlike but because we have always considered ourselves British first; have English family and friends; and see this referendum as a total waste of time and money.

If this is the report (at bottom of page) then, yes, your initial date is correct and the stay was quite lengthy –

Given the dates, I wonder if it was more likely to be the Fairey, Hayes produced machines rather than those built in Belgium.

Can’t tell you about the Spitfire but the F-104 is MM-6830 formerly of the Italian Air Force though now in USAF colours –

We will get independence Charlie, if not this time, then next time around.
Another difference between us and the ‘No’ voters is that they are quite happy stuck in the same old Westminster rut, and don’t expect things to get any better. They think by voting Scottish Labour, Scottish Conservative, or Scottish Liberal, etc, they are voting for a Scottish party and have done their bit for Scotland, but in reality all their masters are in London.
We nationalists aren’t simply going to go belly up and disappear after a ‘No’ vote – I just hope independence happens before I creak off…

Well speaking personally, I have no feeling of being stuck in any rut and, businesswise, have noticed a decided improvement in the last year or so and expect that may continue. Neither am I misled by prefixing Scottish onto any political party. As for my “masters” being in London – well, why not? Got to be based somewhere. Frankly I wish this entire “independence” thing had never reared its head as it is engendering a real us and them attitude both between
English and Scot and Scottish Yes voter v. No voter. I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned ugly. Very sad.

    Hi airfield

Are you sure of the date for the visit as according to this page –

    http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1931/1931%20-%200718.html?search=belgian

the Fireflies don’t appear to have entered service with the Belgian Air Force until later that year.

The condition of the remains is quite amazing after all those years. Thanks for posting the links.
