HDW is offering to install Siemens PEM AIP from U212 family on the 4 x U209 as part of a MLU but only on these – they arent willing to sell it separately for scorpene or amur-mki.
this per someone who asked the HDW reps at Defexpo2006 in delhi recently.

not sure if barak2 will take 5 yrs, israel has been toying with their NGM (next gen missile) idea for SAAR frigates since atleast 2002. some of the work, based around arrow solid rocket technology maybe done already. I guess a enhanced Mf-star radar of elta will be the attack radar.

Inshallah we could see a product in 3 yrs. the 3xP17 and first two P15A will prolly just go with Vl-shtil.

there is no point bringing in aster for just one or two ships.

JonS may not be DDM , though name of the sub is wrong. Rubin makes both Amur and Kilo and is offering a 8 cell brahmos plug on Amur 1650.

you are right Tinwing, the extent of scrap steel recovered has come down from 30 mil tons to 3 mil tons. perhaps in a few decades the ecological damage will be undone by the forces of nature on that 50km of coast.

“We initiated the offer to acquire the Sea Harriers after we came to know that the RN was pulling them out of service. We hope to get a good deal,” Rear Admiral Sunil Damle, Indian Assistant Chief of Naval Staff told the Jane’s Defence Weekly.

Damle said an Indian Navy team had visited the UK to inspect the Sea Harriers, which are being retired by 801 Naval Air Squadron, based at RNAS Yeovilton in southwest England, by the end of next month.

The admiral, however, was unsure whether the Indian Navy would buy six or all eight aircraft, adding that a “clearer picture” regarding the exact number to be acquired would emerge once negotiations progressed.
    …..
Quoting official sources, the report said the fighters’ AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) capability would be removed before the aircraft are handed over to the Indian Navy.

The aircraft, however, would retain their Ferranti ARI-50019 Blue Vixen radars, albeit in an un supported capacity, the report said.

The Indian Navy’s 16 Sea Harrier Mk 51s are currently receiving their first limited upgrade since the type entered Indian service in 1983.

Under the upgrade, the aircraft are being retrofitted with the Israeli Elta EL/M-2032 multi-mode fire-control radar; this matches up with the Rafael Derby air-to-air missile (20 of which the Navy bought in 2005 along with six practice rounds) and a helmet mounted sight.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore, is prime contractor for the upgrade and is offering the helmet-mounted sight.

Rear Admiral Damle said the upgrade would be completed over the next 18 months and would keep the fighters in service for the next decade, enabling them to operate on the Admiral Gorshkov, the second-hand 44,500 tonne Kieve-class carrier that is being retrofitted in Russia and is expected to enter Indian service in 2008-09.

The new Israeli radars will replace the Blue Fox radars, which equipped the aircraft as delivered from 1983 onwards. The Blue Fox radar offers poor ‘look down’ performance and was replaced in the RN Sea Harrier FA2 upgrade by the more capable Blue Vixon radar, he said.

Russian naval shipyard signs contract with Indian Navy
    MOSCOW, FEB 16 (PTI)

A Russian naval shipyard has signed a three-year contract with the Indian Navy for servicing submarines in India.

Under the contract effective till 2009, Severodvinsk-based Zvyozdochka shipyard would provide full servicing for four Kilo class diesel-electric submarines of the Indian Navy at their bases in India, ITAR-TASS reported.

Located on the White Sea coast in north Russia, Zvyozdochka shipyard specialises on the servicing and scraping of nuclear submarines.

It has already upgraded three Kilo class submarines of the Indian Navy beginning from INS Sindhuvir, and fourth INS Sindhghosh is currently undergoing deep refit including the installation of vertical tubes for launching Club-S cruise missiles.

Although the agency did not give the cost of the Indian contract and other details, except that it was concluded through Rosoboronexport State Corporation, it is not ruled out that four upgraded submarines with vertical tubes could be adopted for deployment of state-of-the-art Brahmos cruise missiles.

During recent fleet review, President A P J Abdul Kalam had unveiled the plans to deploy Indo-Russian Brahmos cruise missiles on the naval submarines.

on average 1 worker a day dies in Alang. semi literates with no training are given welding tools and rough directions on how to cut up large ships. many deaths are from sections collapsing prematurely due to improper sequencing, gas cylinders blowing up or people without safety harnesses working on internal structures 20m above the deck or bottom of hold.

I have seen the films…its a hell on earth.

Bager, keep your clemenceau at home. the shipyard workers have enough work breaking the worlds ships in Alang and they are dying not due to starvation but accidents & pollution. Alang beaches and sea are a environmental disaster zone.

the whole business there needs to be cleaned up and regularized. but unfortunately lot of vested interests want it as cheap as possible. construction industry lifts a lot of steel rods from the melted scrap steel in small smelters there. foreign shipowners and govts want someplace out of range to dump their crap. and the local “leaders” are ofcourse in bed with the scrapyard owners.

Israel selectively decided to compete in missiles, avionics, EW/ECM, radars, C3I, UAV and upgrade market. after 20+ yrs of effort they have reached world class levels in all of these.

they have avoided cost intensive products like 5th gen airplanes and engines. they are happy to import engines from US for aircraft and germany for tanks (GDLS license makes the MTU engine for merkava to utilize the US funding I guess).

in ships also they purchased the Saar corvette design from US and submarines from germany.

for a small country with limited resources they play a very smart game. can now compete head to head with US and EU products in their chosen niches.

israeli LGB kits for instance were sold to india lot cheaper than the french offered. we are happy to get “american quality at israeli price” 🙂

there is a PS90B engine for IL76 family which I believe has P&W inputs and is said to be at par with western engines for stds. IL76 has proved to be rugged workhorse.

Israel since early 1980s has invested heavily in areas like embedded electronics and DSP. they have hundreds of niche and very capable cos in these areas. the flow of experienced ussr scientists post 1991 would also have helped. israel has per capita the highest number of MS/Phd types iirc.

India Prepares To Shop for Escort Jammers
    By VIVEK RAGHUVANSHI, NEW DELHI

The Indian Defence Ministry shortly will float a limited global tender for procurement of sophisticated escort jamming systems for its Air Force’s Jaguar combat fleet, allowing the British-made aircraft to suppress enemy strategic air defense systems and protect itself during deep penetration missions.

A senior Defence Ministry official said the $50 million tender will be floated in September, inviting overseas defense firms — including Israel’s Elbit and Israel Aircraft Industries, France’s Thales and Britain’s BAE SYSTEMS — to supply escort jammers for one squadron of 18 Jaguar aircraft.

Once these systems are mounted, the Jaguar aircraft will be able to jam enemy radar and, using anti-radiation missiles likely to be procured in the future, destroy ground radar stations.

Escort jammers also would enable the Jaguars to detect incoming beyond-visual-range missiles and effectively jam an enemy’s early warning radar and C4I systems

I see a lot of young israeli tourists in indian cities. apparently lot of them come over for few months of travel after finishing military draft. up in the himalayas they have even setup israeli “villages” and “communes” where smoking pot, music and destressing is the order of day 😉 there’s quite a international crowd up there in the foothills and many european types have even started their own restaurants to serve their countrymen…from genuine bratwurst to chicken marsala its all there.
