The 1951 flying programme does not mention the Comet, Brabazon or Ambassador as taking part, but of course the displays are always subject to change!
There was an article in the Southend local paper, Evening Echo or perhaps it’s predecessor the Standard in the late 60’s early 70’s. The accompanying photo showed a Spitfire being hoisted into a local garden, definitely not a GRP replica.
AaaaH, those were the days!
Thanks a lot for that Mk12, really appreciated.
Geoff
Mk V,
Think you are right, been digging into the old grey cells! Aircraft was on it’s wheels on an island inside the main gate and in front of the main hospital entrance. Not sure why I thought it was silver though!
The really annoying thing is that I spent a lot of hours looking in it, around it and over it, unfortunately it was not a priority being 17 and in a place where the blokes were outnumbered by females at an approximate ratio of 5/1
.
Guess times really getting to me
The one on the pole was at RAF Uxbridge.
Reference numbers on the above link are 1287A – 1287H
Just to save scrolling through the whole page.
In 1965 when I was stationed at RAF Hospital Ely we had a MK XVI on a pole outside the main entrance, I think it was TB382, it carried a post war silver scheme.
Does anyone know what happened to it or better still does anyone have a picture of it!
I have tried googling it but with no luck.
Albert Ross,
As far as I am aware NX611 never went to Southend. After Biggin Hill she went to either Lavenham or Lasham, cannot remember which! and from there to RAF Hullavington, where I was lucky enough to work on her and then form part of the ‘crew’ who flew her to Blackpool. If you use the search facility there are a lot of threads concerning this trip on the forum.
Richard J Taylor probably has the best information concerning this time.
Is there a bad looking Spitfire?
Personally I love them all 🙂
My sincere condolences to his family.
Working at the end of the flight line at legends a few years ago, aircraft taxi- ing out to take off for the balbo.
Spitfires in front of me, spitfires to the side and spitfires behind me!! what a sensory overload!! Phenomenal!!
Matty,
This may be a stupid suggestion, but have you contacted Planes of Fame? I know they have an S6b replica, but I cannot remember what the cockpit was like.
I have searched through all the pics I took on my visit there a few years back and seem to mislaid the ones I took in that hangar.
I’m sure other members can tell you if you would be wasting your time contacting them, but as I said it’s only a suggestion.
Good luck with your search.
Geoff
BBMF, is there any other way to get hold of a brochure?
My ex adores the BBMF especially the Lanc, and I don’t think she has ever recovered from the time Paul Day had a chat to her!
She has collected the Brochures for a few years now, so if there is any other way to get hold of one please let me know.
Regards
Thanks Bruce,
You saved me a long journey.
Geoff
I excited the show at 16.40 approx, had to follow the signposted one way system, took me nearly an hour of negotiating narrow country lanes to reach the M25, not very impressed!
I found the show in general quite lacklustre, and was not impressed with the RAF role demonstration, might have been better if I could have heard the commentary (if there was one) that went with it, but it seemed very ‘bitty’.
I know that the catering prices are always over the top at these shows, but £2.00 for an ice cream!
Obviously this is just my opinion, but this was definitely one of the more forgettable shows I have been to.
I am seriously going to consider whether I will bother going next year.
