That’s a cheap shot whatever your personal issue with Ollie is. An awful thing to say.
Cheap??? Absolute bargain basement. A terrible statement. You should be showing some respect, especially as he hasn’t got it…
That’s the guy. Did you know him/meet him J man?
I’ve heard from one of my sources that the VRT have made a trip to Woodford in the last few days… π
If it was in pristine condition then fine but it isnβt is it. It canβt even be moved now. Letβs face it, how many Vulcans are there in the UK? 15 complete airframes? It isnβt rare or unique and I believe XM603 is too far gone to be worth saving. It would be very costly to get it in back in any sort of safe condition.
That’s what they’ll tell you….
Sadly the project appeared to lack direction after one the leading chaps died a few years ago and it has drifted since then.
I know exactly who you mean. He features on pretty much every Vulcan history film. He was a foreman at Woodford when they were getting built and his name has escaped my mind. Seemed a smashing bloke, totally no nonsense. For “lost direction” read “stopped by jobsworths”. They wouldn’t have dared threaten her with the axe if he was still around…
Sorry about the post length and I expect it will fall on deaf ears (or blinkered eyes) but there you go.
I’m sorry Arthur, you are absolutely correct!!! π Its all just sour grapes from me because I hate the thought of losing her especially after all the work of these guys over the years, no offence meant. π
Incidentally work started on the main gear last night doing I donβt know what. Draining fluids maybe?
Anyone working on her at the minute? π
Heartbreaking…
Unbelievably sad, especially seeing her all powered up not even 3 months ago. π π π 391 being shredded you can understand. This is a total waste and the BAe suits SHOULD hang their heads in shame, no matter what anyone says. The excuse will always be that they helped 558 to live and that was mentioned a few years ago, I think on this very forum that this would be the very excuse that they would use to be rid of her.
The last time she was ever powered up. See http://www.tvoc.co.uk/gallery.asp π
Is it possible to find out what the plans are for her Arthur?
How mean do Vulcans look??!! :diablo:
I absolutely ADORE Vulcans, as you have probably guessed!!! Me and my wee lad (3 yrs old) went to Bruntys CWJ day in August, which I wouldn’t miss for the world, and on the way back, I tried to have a look at XM575 at East Midlands. Bear in mind, this is a Sunday at about 6pm. We drove up and, unbelievably, it was STILL OPEN!!! Me and Ryan (he’s only 3, but he knows the score!!) walked around for as long as we could. Ever since 391 went, I have vowed to get involved with Vulcan preservation. I love them. I still do. If I didn’t have a young family, every spare minute would be spent trying to help all the survivors. The guy on the gate, his name eludes me, was superb. He was a volunteer, been there years, told me everything. I took a membership form home, telling him that I wanted to work solely on the Vulcans preservation. I would have been there every spare minute, like at Carlisle mentioned above. Again, circumstances, and anyone with a young family will know this, have to come first. But it is heartbreaking.
But, what got me was the absolute dedication of these fellas. Come rain or shine, battling in the face of the weather and other factors (not in this case, but in other cases, the suits who don’t know what history is, a la 603, total lack of respect for those old hands), spending their own free time and even their money on something that makes them feel proud. Like they’re doing something.
He told me something on that gate that really sunk in. He told me how much work is involved in keeping an aircraft in a safe static condition, especially as, the larger it is, the more work it is, especially the corrosion. The Vulcan, and all the other bigguns are a nightmare to look after. Do they do it because they have to? Are they getting paid? No, it’s the pride when someone looks around these aircraft in awe, maybe remenisce about their own personal experiences of it. The Vulcan, and all the others are a bitch to look after, a nightmare. But to look at them, would you think that ANY of them had been there the best part of 20 years?? ALL of you volunteers, I genuinely do salute you, and I genuinely wish I was part of it.
I remember photographing ‘391 a couple of years ago. A man and his wife pulled up next to her. They were in awe. They asked what it was and I explained. It’s a Vulcan Bomber. It was the nuclear deterrent. It kept people sleeping safe and sound in their bed. I reeled off the history. Their awe turned to disgust as they looked at how neglected she was and what her history was. But I felt great, but at the same time helpless because Bateson wouldn’t let anyone near her. That’s another story though…
π π π
When I visited a few years back, there was talk of running her APU when the museum is closed (due to H&S bullsh*t) as a feasibility evaluation was carried out and it appeared she could be powered up without any problems. Whether this now happens I am unsure. I asked to join the Solway volunteers to solely look after her earlier this year but sadly, my days off didn’t fit with their days in. π
Still no reply email…….. π
John, i’ve been waiting for a reply to three, the first one since September. I phoned them in the end. I would suggest you do the same.
Just imagine for a minute if the guys had got their hands on one of these beautiful birds!!! Anyone who has been to one of the absolutely superb LPG days or the Cold War Jets open days will know the experience Bruntingthorpe provides!! It is amazing!! I went yo the CWJ day in 2005 and I was blown away by the sight of these historic A/C, although consigned to ground, how noisy and generally, in those days, no body give a f*ck about noise pollution!! Two EE Lightnings, in pairs, no more than 15 metres from you winding up, and then lighting the burners and disappearing into the distance. Deafness Guaranteed!!! I never saw Concorde taking off, only landing. Was she really that loud?? As loud as two Lightnings reaching for the sky??? Would she have competed at Bruntingthorpe with Englands finest jet fighter??? And Englands finest commercial aircraft??
I still reckon one should have gone to Brunty for the open days…:diablo:
Avro Heritage own cockpit section of XM602, currently being used as a procedures trainer at Bruntingthorpe for XH558. They may want to keep XM603 for themselves also, especially if ‘602 doesn’t come back. I can’t see them just scrapping the cockpit of her as she is complete inside. I can’t see many bits going walkies from inside that haven’t already done so. I think the preservation groups who take such excellent care of the runners and especially the flyer are more interested in the bits behind the cockpit like electrical panels, PFCU’s, engines etc.
I have emailed them many times in the past Jon to no avail. If you want answers, and I know this method works, the best thing to do is to phone them up today as they are there until approx 2pm or 3pm I think. They will tell you everything you wish/need to know, hopefully when she is going and what will be going where. They should talk to you about the situation. The number is 0161 955 4182 and just ask for Avro heritage. π
They’ll probably let everything settle down and then obliterate her on the quiet when it’s too late to save/do anything about her… π
If you go along the road where the golf course is you can see the airfield and 603 from there. There will probably be a copper there so you may need to have a word first… π
