Thanks Creaking Door (how about some WD40:D).
Trolly Aux, beter start another seperate thread.
Fully agree, it was fortunate that the cockpit section was saved. The last Halifax was scrapped in 1973 in Argentina!
A Dutch phrase is that with hindsight you look a cow up it’s behind….
As you know where I stand regarding the Halifax, my previous post in this thread should not be considered
critisim but a constructive way to explain the current state of YAM’s masterpiece and how it can be further
upgraded in quality.
It was mentioned here that she is also a memorial for the volunteers who worked hard but are now no longer
with us. I would treat this carefully as that would paralyse any further work to be done on her.
I like to see the bigger picture not regarding YAM and it’s volunteers but the Halifax legacy, especially in the UK.
The Canadian legacy is very much alive and kicking thanks to Karl, Deryck etc. The UK still has to set some things
straight in that field.

Nah! to keep everything together while the glue dries.
Wasn’t that Graham Trant? IIRC he saved the cockpit (and forgot the entire airframe) and it went to Skyfame and then IWM.
The previous pic of Freddy at night really shows the almost flat dihedral. The Outer Hebrides were a good area for Halifax hunting
as years later Ian Foster located another rear fuselage section from NA142, this was used on the NA337 restoration.

Of cours it looks magnificent and the last time a private group pulled off such a fantastic project in the UK. What I meant by short cuts in the Just Jane thread is the nose transparency, the props (as Peter said they only had a Merlin prop blade for reference at the time, who can blame them), the engine cowlings (Noratlas?), exhausts (you can really tell the front of them were made from workmen hard hats, ingenious but hmmm…) short rudders and there are no bombdoors. The wider span is not noticiable (the flatter dihedral is however).
I visited Elvington (again) last november and you can understand I was glued to Freddy. And it’s an fantastic monument for Elvington, the Free French squadrons who were based there and the Halifax as a type of course. But after the tailplane was rebuilt again because it’s was sagging, nothing more has been done to improve the “shortcuts” (as I call them). As mentioned in the Just Jane thread it would be great if the airframe can be given a thorough overhaul to check the condition, correct the shortcuts (even gradually funds permitting) and make sure she stands as a magnificent achievement for decades to follow. It would also be nice if a sort of coorperation can be set up between the Canadian team reconstructing a Halifax and sharing the cost of making duplicate parts.
And the nose section of PN323, well that has been discussed before but as YAM’s Halifax has wooden frames which really show when you go inside, it would make it a true representative of all Halifaxes.
But that is not nitpicking, if the nose transparency, the propblades and exhausts are sorted, those are the most needed things done in my humble view. But then again I have a very soft spot for the good old Hallybag.
Nothing negative about that is there?

By the way, will RB396 be rebuild as a cardoor?
As do most of the forumites these days:D
Indeed (where is that “like” button Bazv:D).
My point is (and was) is dat this is an amazing project in the UK with a private organisation being able to restore a complex four-engined
aircraft to flight. It would be great if other projects can benefit from the experience. Although Jane has been well cared for (and
I enjoyed the three dvd’s on her) the time spent outside must have left some scars yet to be uncovered. I am very much
eager to see what’s under the paintwork.
Only thing still needed is an observer type parachute harness. So if anyone have one in use as suspenders I would be glad to replace it with the correct item.

That’s not me but another dummy hehe. Was fun futting him into the cockpit this morning.
