Anna, the French quarter was built on high ground and as such basically remains unscathed (if it was indeed built by the FVrench as I heard it was then kudos to them for the forethought of building it on the highest ground they could find), it will bounce back, as will all of New Orleans eventually…
The Mexican Army/Navy has made their presence felt with a 35 truck convoy now operating on American soil for the first time since the Mexican/American war in the mid-1800’s, and the navy has sent a ship to assist with efforts in the Gulf….and rumor has it one of the FIRST rescue groups was a band of Canadian Mounties from Vancouver that went around trying to determine if folks in buildings were alive or not and helping them get out….way to go, Neighbors!!

CRazy. I love it. Always wondered what a Spit would look like painted as a Corsair….now the question is answered…they should ALL make the change 🙂

The story of the escort carrier surviving an attack from major Japanese warships probably is the incident off of Leyte Gulf wherein a bunch of escort carriers, destroyers, and destroyer escorts were suddenly face to face with a bunch of Japanese battleships and cruisers and the Americans put up SUCH a ruckus with ships running all over the place and planes attacking and torpedoes in the water everywhere that the Japs backed off, thinking they had come across amajor surface force of the American Navy and fell back to regroup…unfortunately the Americans did NOT come through unscathed, losing one escort carrier and I believe 2 DE’s in the process, but succeeded in keeping the heavy Japanese force from disrupting the allied landings on Leyte….while meanwhile, to the north, Halsey was trying to get his Iowa class battleship (not sure which one….thinking New Jersey) into range to fire on one of the Yamato class heavies…and fell about 50 miles short of doing so (boy would THAT have been a battle of heavyweights!!) before being recalled to protect the invasion force….
ah, history…and the ‘what if’ category remains conjecture on our parts….

Whatever happened, the Government and FEMA both have a lot to answer for in the aftermath…this whole thing should have been taken care of a LOT sooner than it was…and the mayor of NO is a black man, the Governor of Louisiana is a woman.

Just heard that the famed ‘French quarter’, the famous tourist destination, is relatively unscathed and will probably survive with very few modifications and see yet another Mardi Gras before too long…someday I hope to see this great area/city as it once was and find myself a little depressed that I have not yet made it down there…and it is now trashed.
I am dismayed by those who would say that ‘We’re Americans…we can fend for ourselves and we need no outside help.” What a crap attitude…an emergency is an emergency and help is help, we’ll take it, pride be damned…ask any of the 500,000 folks who have been evacuated from the quagmire that is now New Orleans or any other gulf coast city that was hit by Katrina. FEMA screwed up BIG time and will have its day in court to answer for its incompetencies (FEMA for the uninformed is the Federal Emergency Management Agency), one of which is when it moved into NO a few days after the disaster it FAILED to communicate with local agencies and coordinate its efforts with them. A few days ago a gun battle erupted between Military troops and a band of about 10 roving gunmen/looters and 6 of them were killed, putting forth the message that if they continue to impede the rescue efforts they WILL be taken out one way or another…and since that battle things have calmed down and rescues by helicopter have resumed.

Do I have to say it? My grampa built it, another relative flew it, it was beautiful, it was fast, it worked from Carriers, it worked from land, it fought for control of the air, it attacked things on land and sea, it took photos, it was one of the most beautiful BRUTES ever to take to the air, it had its own TV series, it had an 11 to 1 kill ratio, it served into the 70’s in some places….
And 60 years on there’s still about 100 of them left, and maybe 40 of those flying…and still more to come.

The Tagline for Boyington was “Just show me a hero and I’ll show you a bum…” or something like that, making the point that what ONE person says that is good about someone, someone ELSE can totally contradict and shoot full of holes.I got to meet Boyington when I was about 12, sitting on the wing of a Wildcat at an airshow and signing copies of his book. Larger than life. Flawed. Human. A Hero? Certainly, in the George Patton vein-great in war, lousy at anything else in peacetime. I’ll stick with him, whether the score is 28 kills or 24 (revised)….still MORE than enought to qualify…
