Ahhh, now the link is working, and I was WONDERING if that was Rohr in the PT-23 but I never saw the pilot, so I never connected with any WIX’ers except Richard Allnutt who I had dinner with (and 5 other folks) and we had a good time….if I had been able to see some faces over on the WIX forums I might have recognized a few folks (and they me) and I would’ve met a few folks, but it did’nt work out that way….maybe next time…

Tim-
Definitely wanna see what you got, but the link just brings up a ‘we’re sorry’ link, it’s not working….check it if you would…

Having just gotten off of the USS New Jersey about 5 days ago and being in awe of her, I would dearly LOVE to see two Iowa class ships power project again….but that’s just my two cents. Guess it’s up to the bureau-cats to fight it out and see what happens…

It was a fantastic flight….to see the area that I used to ply on my old Coast Guard cutter from the air like that, it was pretty cool….and Corsairs to boot.
No, Odegaard’s Corsair went to Mississippi for an air race, apparently that show’s check showed up in the mail first so Odegaard went there instead, did’nt make the Corsair gathering…..ah well. Would’ve been nice but stuff happens, so we made do with the 5 we had….still a lot of fun. More of a report when I get home from work.

oof….hope they can fix it.
Yeah, it was a good time, got some pics of the ‘Corsair on a Stick’ at the airport (it REALLY needs to come down and be restored)….lots of celebrities in the audience, too…lots of Black Sheep and other Corsair pilots….Victoria Vought and family, granddaughter of Chance Vought….spent a good deal of time talking with Peter Guyton, son of Boone Guyton, Vought chief test pilot, he was working for Fuji cameras and photographingthe old war vets and then presenting them with prints of themselves printed right on site….Steve Tesla, grandson of the other Vought test pilot Lyman Bullard was there too, as was one of the sons of Igor Sikorsky (forget his name)…the old hangars are holding up well and being used by Atlantic Aviation, the field FBO and it was fun to wander the hangars….the factory, overlooking the airport from across the street was closed and has been for years, was gonna try to weasel my way in but there was so much else going on I never got around to it….they used to build Tank engines in there and Helicopter engines after Vought abandoned it, but apparently it has been dormant and empty for several years…Got my first three rolls of film back from the air to air mission on sunday and have some useable if not GREAT stuff, but happy with it from where I was shooting (out of the nose of the B-25) which offered limited opportunities of the Corsairs trailing behind us…but GREAT views of Long Island sound and the countryside..
More on sunday….

Merlin-
Actually, consider yourself lucky to see ONE Corsair at any given airshow in the US, since there are about 100 left world wide and about 40 flying, maybe 30 of those in the states…the most I’ve seen at any one show was the Gathering at Indy 3 years ago when 6 went up (and one did’nt), and before that the largest group of them in modern times was at OSH in ’94 when they had 12 (silly me I was at a North American Gathering at Santa Maria, CA at the time)…as for ‘more than a passing interest’, yes, my Grandfather, Blaine Morris, helped to build these birds at Stratford during the war and it kind of became the ‘family plane’ (another relative on my step mother’s side is rumored to have flown them in the pacific)…my grandfather passed in 1985 but I still have some of his artwork and now…I get to go explore the area, airport, and buildings in which he worked during the war….think his ghost will be with me?

Right Andy, see, it’s about $1200 for you to get here (of course you are taking two flights during the trip) so it is STILL almost cheaper for you to fly twice than it is for me to fly ONCE over to the UK….
By the way…got any dates for this excursion yet? Gotta check on the availability of the condo for you, so the sooner the better…

No, I’m kidding…they’re great photos, I wish I could get a chance to photograph WWII planes displaying over the countryside like that here in the states…
The comments about the models/fishing string were what we call ‘a joke’…damn my American sense of humor, which once again failed to translate…
M
Let’s see what else I have on the hard drive…Not much, but here is a shot of the CAF Corsair in its old markings over Breckenridge TX back in 1996….and back before that in company with Dean Cutshall’s old Mustang ‘Cutter’s Capers’ and Howard Pardue’s N68HP before it crashed circa 1992, also over Breckenridge…and the old Bob Mitchem racer N194G now owned by James Axtell and displayed at the Wings over the Rockies museum in Denver…
Expect to have a WHOLE lot more Corsair shots to show you all in about…oh….12 days!!
Mark
I’m looking for fishing line that’s holding the model up…anyone can pose their models that way over a scenic backdrop if they can hide the fishing string…
Whycome so many American manufactured planes look great in British paint/markings?
M
Actually….technically….if I remember right….the speed record belonged to the P-38 ….the Corsair was the first SINGLE ENGINED fighter to pass 400 mph, doing 405 from Startford to Hartford…
I could be (and would gratefully be) wrong…
M
Good to see you on the forums, Gordon…

J Edgar wore dresses and ate whole bakeries in one sitting…how the hell he made it into office and stayed there so long is a monument to American bungling….
