Maybe new nose art NOW but in that link it’s also still ‘Guns and Roses’, a rose carrying an M-16 rifle…..but they probably have changed it by now.

Well, then you’ll find this interesting….THIS is her! (Doan’s old machine) Check the N number…this is a shot I took of her in her old colors BEFORE they repainted her into her new camouflage colors and the the name ‘Guns and Roses’ on the cowling…and as I said, she just sold on to a guy/company in Houston, so she’s still flying as far as I know…I thought this Skyraider looked familiar from the air to air pics!
Mark
Too many to mention….but one stands out…..’Black Sheep Squadron!’….

I’m not a hugely religious person (tho I AM catholic), I think this pope was fantastic…he came through Denver in 1984(?) and just turned the town on its ear, he liked hiking around the mountains (reminded him of his home country of Poland, he said) and just seemed a great guy….even a few weeks ago, when he was in frail health, you could still see he had his sense of humor when a flock of doves he and a bunch of children released out of his apartment window decided they liked it better inside and the kids and the Pope tried to chase them all out again, but wound up laughing the whole thing off…
I’ll miss him quite a bit….we should do as well to get another like him.
Mark
I just ask because we had a Skyraider out here numbered ‘409’ and in the same paint scheme….it then changed colors to camouflage and assumed the nose art ‘Guns and Roses’ and is now down in Houston after having been sold on last year…I wonder if it’s the same machine? Where did Doan’s bird end up? Is it still stateside or has it gone to the UK?
Mark
I did’nt forget the P-39….it just did’nt measure up to these three in my approximation, although it did do its bit in the grand scheme of things, I guess..
I have a photo in John Dibbs ‘Flying Legends’ book of a P-40 and A black Hurricane parked side by side and the accompanying story mentions a British pilot flying against the Yank pilot in a mock combat at about 3,000 feet (so all on the ground could see)….the British pilot seemed impressed with the P-40’s performance and the Yank pilot’s abilities….he goes on to comment “I thought you Yanks were all mouth….you did very well.” But even the Yank pilot seemed to think he would’ve had a lot more trouble with the Hurricane at altitude….so EN380’s comments would probably be accurate.

Indeed…looks like her stay was well worth it and we learned a lot from her…a good thing.
Off to catch the next one….who’s got the chum?
Mark
Consul, where were these taken, in the US or UK? And if US, what state?

The whole Eldridge episode ended happily enought, he lived and still flies, but we are down one amazing Corsair with the loss of the Super Corsair, she was a beast and fun to watch….however, things have’nt gone as well for Lad Doctor who underwent treatment here in Denver at a hospital that is supposed to specialize in spinal cord injuries, I believe he is still paralyzed and of course the Corsair is a disaster…but I’m sure someone somewhere, if they have’nt already, will endeavour to rebuild it at some point. Howard’s Bearcat, after a few glitches, is back up and flying and I have to agree with what someone said above, whoever was piloting Jim Read’s dash 5 that day did a HELLUVA job avoiding the accident and still only doing minimal damage to the plane itself…she’s still with us and VERY active.

Actually, our gas prices are up there too (for us)…we’re paying $2.15 a gallon now where it’s usually about $1.60 to 1.70, and it’s only forecast to go higher as the summer goes on. Out in California they are paying about $3 to $3.25 a gallon right now…OPEC says that they are gonna increase production but for SOME reason the oil companies always seem to find SOME little way to keep prices high even after the price per gallon falls…refinery problems in Texas, stuff like that…
Ah well…time to convert the Jeep to Ethanol or a Hydrogen/water mix (or whatever the combination is that leaves no exhaust…)
M
I’m there….you cover the cost of the flight over from Colorado, I’ll pay you for gas….

I was with friends at DX 2000 when the Grumman F3F’s were up and about, one of them commented that he still had to raise his voice to be heard even when the Cats were out of sight over the horizon!
Also, same trip, up at RAF Coningsby later in the week, we got to watch the engine run up on the blue photorecon Spitfire (5 bladed, Griffon powered) and we were holding our ears while we were in FRONT of it, can’t imagine how uncomfortable it must have been for the lads in back of it….incredibly loud…

Hmmmm…interesting….looking over all the paperwork in my kit (and at the box) all I could find was ‘made in USA’ and ‘AMT/Ertl company, Dyersville, Iowa’…the box LOOKS brand new like it just rolled off the production line (in fact there was a whole line of just these size models, all AMT/Ertl, including the P-40F, JU-88, and a few others at this shop)…wonder if I have an older kit or one that just ‘aged well’ since the company quit doing planes…?
Mark
The planes in question, lest anyone be confused…Hurricane (at left), P-40E (at right), Wildcat (bottom)…
Man, that had to screw up the pilot’s night vision, did’nt it? Did this system make it very far? I know the P-70 Nightfighter version saw action, but not a lot of it…
