Cripes…let’s hope this isn’t a hint of things to come this summer! We could use a good, smooth year for once…
Steve, et al-
Yeah, Friedkin does the world a service by displaying his birds in other environments where they might not otherwise be seen, good on him for doing so (I personally enjoyed watching the British reaction to the Grummans, a friend of mine said that they were the only planes he’d ever known that could be out of sight behind the horizon and STILL drown out conversation)…they were an interesting addition to the already good mix of planes at DX that year…
For those who would lament the loss of a Hurricane and a Spit to these or other shores, consider….we only have x amount of Spits in the States (and less of Hurricanes), so these birds are REALLY appreciated when they show up at the airshows they go to each year, it gives the airshow a ‘worldly’ feel, having two of Britain’s finest on the ground in the U.S….now if only we could respond in Kind and loan you the B-29 and the Canadian Lanc for a year or two…I’d love to see it!
Mark
Reckoned that was what you meant…I know of his propensity to send things to the UK, was there for the Grumman F3F’s in 2000 and whatever he sent the next year also. Was nice to see the Spit and Hurri at Chino a few years ago, but I reckon the UK scene misses them. Had my pic taken in front of AE977 during it’s first show at DX, then again at Chino a few years later…whod’a thunk? Love having a flying Hurricane around tho…can’t wait for the Lone Star example to get out of Middleton’s shop and into the air, hopefully this summer…

Why and how would ML417 find its way back over there?
Mark
Shweeeeet…makes me wish I had cable. I just want a video on the Corsair like I have on the P-40 with Jeff Ethell narrating…and I know he made one like that for the U-bird, too….just can’t seem to catch up with it. Still waiting for the ‘Corsair Experience’ DVD being put out by my frined Mike Schneider in Atlanta (http://www.f4ucorsair.com)….that should kick ass!
Mark
Ah, crap…now that REALLY sets the bells and whistles off, another Corsair gathering…when did this come about and how come this is the first I’ve heard of it? Gonna have to have a talk with my e-mail circuit and see why they’re slacking….Hey Crazy, can you pass on any more details? I have on my e-mail list Mint Moore also, so I have asked him for details, but anything more you hear and pass on would be appreciated…
Dallas…ick….not a HUGE fan of Texas anyway, but that far east? Oy….oh well, closer than Indy was 2 years ago…
Mark
Good lord…another gathering of Horses….better get busy on the press passes, call **** Phillips and find out where he’s staying, make plans for the drive which will take a whole 16 hours (hey, great, it’s almost LOCAL for us from Colorado…) anyone want to fly to Denver and help us drive from here? Great mountain scenery….Cripes, another feckin’ Mustang roundup….wonder if we’ll have another Corsair gathering after this…

Hey, kids, here’s a crazy idea…why don’t we wait for the actual film to COME OUT before we bash it all to hell and slap it around for it’s Hollywoodization of historical events without even knowing if it’s going to be accurate or not? I know, I know, a radical idea to say the least, but what say we give it a try before lining up in queues outside the local theatre to protest en masse the film which has not even been released! :p

Here’s your Staggerwing, just a different one…Embassy Colors, used in the UK during the war, known to have transported Ike while over there…now carries a fire engine ‘kill’ mark on it’s fuselage for a little incident it had with one of those machines back in the early 90’s…owned by Chris Jacobsen, Denver, Colorado. Need I mention which plaen I consider to be the most beautiful? Look to the left…

You British folk eat some weird stuff at airshows…thank god. Loved the food at Old Warden, very unconventional compared to the American airshow food…funnel cakes, pancakes at early morning breakfast (with sausage and coffee)…love the bratwurst at American shows…had pizza delivered to the A-26 ‘Feeding Frenzy’ once at Midland post show, a great time with those folks (Jeff Ethell included, hell of a guy)…usually pack a cooler with lots of soda in it and some ‘Lunchables’ in it, pre packaged crakers and meat with mayo or mustard, you make little sandwiches out of them…cold fried chicken is good too. Nothing beats a pint from the on site pub at Duxford after a day’s airshowing, and i particularly liked the mint marinated Lamb at the Plough near Duxford post show one time.

Talked with a local Corsair pilot here in Denver yesterday at the Wings over the Rockies museum, he flew early birdcage models, dash 4 and 4B’s, and the -5…he liked the Corsair a lot, never had trouble getting it aboard a carrier at all…..I asked him if he’d heard of a Corsair chopping the tail off of a Japanese ‘Sally’ recon plane, he said he did’nt need to hear about it, one of the guys in his squadron chopped the tail off a Twin Beech by accident and still landed the Corsair (the three guys in the Beech were’nt so lucky, they died….the pilot of the Corsair was inspecting the landing gear of the Beech when he got too close and chopped the tail off).
The guy’s name was Don Welsh, a nice gentleman…and he extended his invitation to any Brits who should stop by to see the “Battle of Britain” display at the museum, a very interesting set up as I can testify to it first hand…very well done.

Some truly great stuff, gents…love the Bucc photo above, guessing it was JUST before a belly landing…I’ll throw in my own 2 cents with a photo I’ve posted before (I’m kinda limited on what I can post due to my scanner being broke), this is of the CAF P-40N over Hubbard Reservoir in Breckenridge, TX around 1995…best photo mission I’ve had yet.

When I was over to England in 2000, we did the East Kirkby/Coningsby bit to see the BBMF and the Lanc (Could’nt see PA474 at the time as she was away in Scotland for the Queen Mum’s birthday celebrations), but we took the tour of the rest of the BBMF planes and saw all of them up close (a great tour led by a guy named Ted Farrant, if I recall…he was classic!) We saw the ‘Blue’ 5 bladed late model Spitfire run up on the ramp and the noise was deafening! I seem to recall, also, that there is a Handley Page Hampden hidden away in one of the hangars on the East Kirkby site, being restored v e r y s l o w l y…I have the pics somewhere…can anyone update on her progress? All in all, a very worthwhile day even though we did’nt get to see ‘Just Jane’ run her engines….there was plenty else to look at!

Alright, well…it seems most of you already know what happened as detailed in the posts above, and Howard is alright…I have a photo of the Wildcat passed on from several friends to me and I attach it here for the benefit of all readers on this forum…Howard is a character and he is hard to get to talking, but once he starts he’ll talk your ear off, especially if it’s about something he likes (like flying or warbirds)…my own and my partner Denise’s relationship with him goes back to the Breckenridge shows in the early 90’s, we loved those shows, and Denise has several photos of Howard dancing with her daughter to country music and he remains a good friend to this day….I just have to wonder (and marvel) at his luck and hope that it holds. He is a great character and friend and if you have’nt met him, i encourage you to do so next time he climbs out of the Hellcat at Legends (or whihc ever plane they put him in)….it’ll be well worth your time.
Mark
Much appreciated…breathing a bit easier now, Paul, thanks…God, one has to wonder how much luck Howie has left after busting open his Corsair, getting run over by a Corsair while in his Bearcat, and now busting up his Wildcat….maybe someone’s trying to send him a message…
