My big knock against american warbird shows is that, from my experience, most of the planes fly by one at a time, there is no unusual grouping of mixed types unless it’s the finale and the ‘missing man’ formation, where we get one pass (and one of the planes ups and heads west)…maybe I’m attending the wrong shows, but I don’t think so. I reckon the big knock against mixing all the planes is that there are different performance factors on each type, one cruises faster than the other, one isn’t as maneuverable as the other…it could get complicated as far as trying to get them all together in one big formatin (or even a four ship)….now, I’m not saying it DOES’NT happen over here, but not for an extended stretch of time like happens with the Breitling routine. The last warbird display team using fighters I recall stateside was the 4 Horsemen, 4 pilots back east flying Mustangs at airshows doing aerobatics and passes, and again these were 4 planes of the same type, not a mixed bag. I never got to see them, either.
The closest we have come here in recent years to a big mixed formation ala the Duxford Balbo is the grand finale at Chino last spring when they did almost the same thing….
As for your assertion that americans are interested in American aircraft, such is not the case in my opinion, which is why myself and a friend have made the semi-annual trek to Britain to see some planes that are ‘different’, and a whole bevy of my airshow pals, mostly photographers, have also made an annual or semi-annual pilgrimage to DX or Wanaka or wherever the planes are different and the sights are unusual…granted, we’re not the average, layman airshow observers, so I can’t answer that question for you, but I think Americans like variety and things unusual, yes. I know I do.

There is a story on Galcier Girl over here in an American magazine in which it is suggested that a tour may be in the offing, with Steve Hinton taking the plane around the country so folks can see it….like the recently completed and successful east coast swing of the Corsair, Hellcat, P-40 and P-38 from Chino…I sure would welcome it if it came ANYWHERE near Denver, would be worth going to Arizona or Kansas to see if it makes it there….

Trumper, sounds like you and I have similar ‘vehicular’ problems…I used to carry around a drip tray in the Jeep too so as not to leave an oil slick behind when I departed from a friend’s house or over at my parents, sometimes even just in a parking lot if I was gonna be there a while….the old saying as far as Jeeps go (lots of them leak oil) is that it’s just marking its territory, kinda like a wolf…and the other goes (although this is for round aircraft engines) that if it’s not LEAKING oil, you know it’s OUT of oil!

Got the valve cover fixed last summer and now it leaks a lot less….but it still leaks, just part of the personality of the Jeep, I guess…

No, no photos of the Jeep, wish I had some stored on here (my scanner’s on the fritz)….just imagine a dark blue Jeep with the words ‘Ridge Runner’ written across the hood on both sides in red and yellow…with occasional cancer here and there that needs fixing…but it’s a good 4 wheeler and my daily driver….

I have a Jeep CJ-5 that’s in need of restoration, has rust in the body panels, leaks oil from it’s straight 6 engine (half of a V-12?), but it’s never failed to get me back from a 4 wheeling trip and would be a worthy candidate for restoration, and is named after a plane….’Ridge Runner’, after Dan Martin’s Mustang in California (could’nt find an appropriate nickname from a Corsair out there)…

Let me know what you’d charge….

Interesting stuff…but was actually hoping for combat reports…and a few more replies from folks who knew more about all this! Apparently there aren’t many folks out there who know what the story is regarding the Zero v. Spitfire scene…I have heard the Zero won out, and I have heard the opposite. Based on the facts posted on this thread, it would lead one to believe that with the later mark (and progressively better) marks of Spits, they would have to gain superiority over the Zeke 52 (pretty much the ultimate Zero) and gain the upper hand later in the war. What about carrier-launched Seafires? Anyone know anything about how they fared vs. Japanese aircraft later in the war, flying alongside TBM’s, Hellcats, Fireflies, Corsairs, and other strike aircraft and hitting targets in Japan? They must have encountered (decreasing) aerial resistance.

I would have to say I would like to get my hands on any dash 4 Corsair and do it up in an appropriate late war paint scheme…barring that, I would take an earlier dash 1A or 1D model and paint it up in VMF-351 colors off of the USS Cape Gloucester with the ‘FF-‘ numbers on the side, a great paint scheme…

Then there’s that Brazilian ‘TAM’ machine with the birdcage canopy….

My brother in Pennsylvania went out there a year ago to shoot some shots for Classic Wings magazine, it still had a LONG way to go, probably another 3 or 4 years….sorry, don’t know of a link to the site, but someone in here will.

A photo of the event mentioned above, with Bob McClurg talking to a couple of WELL KNOWN European magazine types…McClurg is at left, and as you can see the lighting isn’t the best….even with all that sunshine outside the tent.

Well, I for one am not dissappointed…every photo has a story behind it, and the waiting was worth it to hear about the shots of Spielberg and the Spitfire pilot…great stuff and must’ve been a heck of a moment for you….I had a similar event happen to me at the Corsair gathering in Sept. 2002 when I was sitting across from Bob McClurg, Boyington’s wingman, and he was telling stories and calling me and my partners by name….”Mark, I ever tell you about the time Boyington’s relief tube was’nt working…..?” Great stuff, great moment…but it looks like your photos came out better than mine, I did’nt use the flash under that tent canopy and I should have….but I still got some good stuff….

Gunther Rall flew the F-104 when he was the head of the post-war Luftwaffe and has many hours in it.

The Real Zeros used in ‘Pearl Harbor’ were, respectively, owned by David Price, a company called Flight Magic, and the Air Museum’s A6M5…only the Air Museum’s has an original Sakae engine in it, but the others were rebuilt in Russia and later transported back to the states, one of them passing through Duxford on its way (I have the photo from a friend)…All three, as far as I know, are active flyers, two of them based at Chino (one in the Friedkin family hangar, the other is the A6M5 of the Museum). Also in the rebuild shop while I was out there 2 Septembers ago was abother Zero that was making good progress towards flying, but has apparently since departed.

Wish you guys would quit farting around and tell us who the guy on the left at the top with Spielberg is……

So that means we have ‘The Few’ getting ready to start filming, ‘The Howard Hughes story’ almost in the can and with a December release this year, and now a potential Spielberg project off and running (and we all know HE knows how to put a plane on film)….looks like a few projects to look forward to!

Actually, yes, a few years ago I heard they MIGHT do a remake of the Dambusters with Mel Gibson…..and I also heard he was being considered for a Hogan’s Heroes remake…have’nt heard anything on either one since then….
