Hi Martin, I saw earlier ths year that ‘SV is in Hangar 2(number?) with wings off at Coventry. I think there was some deal done where ownership passed on for work undertaken on another Dak though I could be wrong. Ah I found the reply when I queried it earlier this year. This from Jon Corley, CP/MD of Classic Flight

The Dakota in question (G-AMSV) isn’t actually for the University as such. The instructor at the University (ex Atlantique engineer) will be the owner of the Dakota, and will be allowing the University to work on it for training purposes. The aircraft will be airworthy next year (hopefully) and will be used in the airshow circuit.

I think Hinton do (near Turweston). The meat-bombers use one side of the airfield whilst the gliders use the other. They seem to have the landing and departing horizontal separation sorted. Not sure how they manage the risk of gliders milling around the overhead (as they often do) whilst dropping is taking place.

If a club near you has one, check out on it and do a few hours. You won’t be disappointed.

Plus points: handling they are excellent and great to wang about the sky or pretend you are an airliner. Great visibility, quite comfy and everything wraps around the pilot.

Minus points: wing is a bit slabby so aircraft glide ratio isn’t great. Gas struts on gull wings can fail (with hilarious consequences). That wing again doesn’t develop help as much forward speed as you might expect for the power. Switchgear for some is odd (but I love the idiosyncrasy)

Overall far nicer than a standard PA28 or C172. A little pocket rocket by comparison.

Deano, I’m studying with AFT and Coventry who employ a three mod term, with 2 months per term. I’m doing the first round of exams next week at Silsoe; AGK, Instruments, Ops Procs and Comms. Should be finished by February.

    From http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3800051a1860,00.html

Filming for Peter Jackson’s Dambusters will start within weeks, with a full-scale replica bomber, bouncing bomb and miniature dam already complete, the director has revealed.

Jackson is working on a remake of classic film The Dam Busters, based on one of World War II’s most daring feats, in which Royal Air Force bombers destroyed German dams using bouncing bombs.

Most of the $76 million film will be shot in Wellington and Jackson said that for the past few months workers at Weta Workshops in Miramar had been building a full-sized replica of a Lancaster bomber used in the raids.

“We’ve got the Lancaster made now, we’ve got a bomb made, we’ve got the first of the miniature dams made and we’re just working on the second dam,” he told website Ain’t It Cool News.

The plane would be used to make moulds to produce about 10 more Lancaster replicas for the film.

Weta staff had been working on the project for months, though Jackson secured the rights only a few weeks ago, because the workshops had to be ready to focus on Halo, a movie based on a popular sci-fi action video game, for which he will be the executive producer.

“It all worked out well and we’re probably going to actually start shooting some of the miniatures for Dambusters in the next few weeks.”

This meant that some shooting of scenes would start even though there was still no script or cast.

“It’s an interesting way of making a film.”

The latest computer-generated imagery would also be put to use, to give audiences a full-blooded view of the mission, in which the bombers skimmed above treetops to stay below German radar before striking the dams.

“We have not really seen a World War II low-level bombing attack that has been done with all the power of (computer graphics) that really make you feel like you’re really participating in that raid.”

The film was unlikely to feature a host of big-name actors because several of the key pilots were only 20 years old when they led the attacks, Jackson said.

“There are not many stars who are 20 years old. They just don’t really exist, so I would imagine we’ll be looking for unknown young actors.”

Jackson also said he had read reports that Hollywood studio MGM wanted him to make a film of The Hobbit – but said he had not been contacted.

“I’m up for it, but somebody should phone me because I’m getting a bit booked out at the moment.”

You can still use the confuser to check your learning though. You may have to run a “tutor check” with yourself to say “well NZ doesn’t exam that topic” or “NZ does exam that topic whilst JAA doesn’t go into it in much detail really, therefore I’d better just gen up on it”

ATPL students eh? Seem to know-it-all 😉

Can’t say for certain but given the two different aviation authorities, there are bound to be differences.

Check the club and airfield notice boards too! There are (sadly) loads of people who give up flying after they do their PPL and have kit to get rid of. I got a cheap pair of DC13.4s that way.

So apart from East Mids (busy) and Hucknall (part-time and generally RR bods), is Derby and Gamston the next nearest GA fields able to train pilots?

Saw Ravenair in a flight training mag recently and seems a place to consider. Interesting that they have a choice of Aztec or Seneca for their ME/IR. As for engineering courses, I can’t that on their website http://www.ravenair.co.uk/ but ask them if you are interested!
