BTW, “northeast” of the two rows of F-2s, right of the building with a smart light blue roof, is the preserved F-104.
Sigh. And I thought I’m the only one here who doesn’t have much of what one would call “a sense of humour”. 8D

Lasers could replace spark plugs in car engines
24 April 2011 Last updated at 00:36 GMT
Car engines could soon be fired by lasers instead of spark plugs, researchers say.
(IMO, another step towards hand phasers.)
] this has nothing to do with aircraft lasers…
FYI, I decided to include the military electro-magnetic projects in this thread, instead of creating a parallel thread, because whether they are applied as a gauss rifle, or a rail gun, or a mass driver to propel aircraft; they are IMO as sci-fi as lasers and phasers.

Jap serial articles dated 5-6 April 2011, about when the tsunami bashed Matsushima AB.
After the tsunami warning was issued, everyone was ordered to evacuate to third floor or above, not even second floor. However, many controllers and ground crew were still working on the ground, even at the runways, and were difficult to contact.
They used the PA system, and drove cars around the runways, to pass the warning that the tsunami ETA was 15:10. About 1,100 people evacuated into earthquake-resistant buildings, mostly on the roofs.
They began to check names, and they included employees of the shops and visitors on business. Still snowing, and sirens blaring, time went by, and passed the tsunami ETA.
Eerie silence.
From the roofs, they saw cars still driving on the coastline roads, and they yelled at them. Some cars U-turned, but others drove along.
At 15:54, the black tsunami arrived. The soldiers’ private cars began to float.
The four-metre tsunami KO the power generators, 28 aircraft, and emergency supplies. They prepared radio sets to contact any incoming SAR aircraft, and turned off cell phones to conserve batteries.
Fires were seen in the Ishinomaki direction, where the soldiers’ families were.
Sunset and darkness. Candles were lit.
Later, aircraft sound. Radio contact, and discovered it came from Hyakuri AB.
During the night, they thought of the tasks to do after the next sunrise, but they had no cars, no long boots, no tools… nothing.

F-15E Strike Eagles Female Pilots
Posted 3/31/2011 Updated 3/31/2011
3/31/2011 – BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — A team of female Airmen [sic] made history here March 30 when the F-15E Strike Eagles of “Dudette 07” blazed down the runway to provide close air support for coalition and Afghan ground forces.
The two-ship formation consisted of all females, two pilots and two weapons system officers, but more importantly, it marked the first combat mission flown from Bagram to be planned, maintained and flown entirely by females.

Article in Chinese dated 29 March 2011. Interview with PLAAF test pilot HUANG Bing Xin.
http://baike.baidu.com/view/2488914.htm
has Huang’s profile and photo.
Born in 1948. In 1964, joined the military.
In 1985, when 31, became test flight regiment commander, until 1995.
He claims:
In 1994, probably during a test flight, a PLA military aircraft disintegarted at 19,600 m. Pilot was killed.
In 1998, during the FBC-1 Fei Bao first flight, or one of its first flight, he managed to emergency land, although engine(s) malfunctioned, the aircraft shook so hard that he couldn’t clearly see the gauges, and the shock of the landing loosened 2/3 of the instruments from the instrument panels.
Four years later [in 2002], during another FBC-1 test flight, after the rudder fell off, he managed to emergency land.
(IMO, “The excitement never stops.”)
