Hi Jerry,
You could always try one of the ones here.
Both 1/72 and 1/32 scales are available and they are quite good. You do though need quite a bit of patience.
I have looked for the Classic Airframes kit here in Aus with no success so I may have to get one from the net. A Corgi one would of course be excellent as long as they got the dihedral on the wings right. In my opinion this is the biggest downfall with the Corgi models.
All the best
Steve
I would hate to offend the resident Mitchell nuts (being one myself! ) so as a gesture of solidarity offer up another.
Ex Southend, ex North Weald, now Booker, and awaiting the attentions of a Quik Fit Fitter.
I think that should be Ex Biggin Hill, Ex Southend!
Steve
If this thread continues I am going to have to say what I really think about the rest of the series!
JDK you are right, “How They Made A Piece Of Cake” is an excellent book, and well worth seeking out.
Steve
In the book, I believe that he gets shot down by another Spitfire?
I always felt that the series did not live up to the first episode, which was quite excellent.
Steve
Try http://www.worldbackgrounds.com they have over 50 hours of Battle of Britain Film out takes!
Steve
Hi
I always wish a series of events never happened, whilst at school in 1970, a relative in the RN, offered me the chance to sit in a cockpit of a ww2 fighter, at a local royal navy engineering college, as i was interested in aircraft, a rare battle of britain aircraft cockpit section, a whirlwind.
It was later to be disposed of, the RAF were contacted and apparently said we don’t need it, sadly it was burnt in a fire fighting display on a later ‘ RN family day’.
Before anyone asks I never got photos of it..
I always assumed they turned it down because the RAF thought is was a helicopter cockpit.
I have never been able to trace the I/D of the aircraft but have a couple of options.
A very sad tale and I would say quite typical of the RAF’s attitude to the presevation of anything from 1918 to 1980. Remember that a lot of the goodies in the RAF Museum did not come from RAF stores.
As to Whirlwind replicas, well a real one may take some time, but I have been working on a very accurate virtual one for that wonderful flight sim X-Plane which will be released soon.
Steve
The late Jack Hawkins (Hawkings?) played the pilot, and the aircraft had some sort of JATO system as well. Can not remember the name of the film though, not seen it for yonks.
Steve
Thanks guys,
There is a lot of info. there for me to digest.
Steve
I reckon you guys have missed out on the Avro 504 at the War Museum storage facility in Canberra, and the Vimy at Adelaide.
Steve
Well they are asking $1,200,000 for it! so I imagine it is a flyer.
Steve.
Mr BlueSky,
I’ve just updated my email address in the user profile area since I had forgotten to do this since coming to Oz. So if you have already sent a copy, you will have to send it again. Apologies.
Thanks
Steve.
”and the drawings on page 61 look a bit suspect.
side profile C , the cockpit side walls curve to the top of the joint with the wings, but to be fair most i have seen do this,
but from wartime drawings AP , and stuff at the NA,& photos, it seems to be straight down, bit hard to explain , but if anyone wants the drawings ( AP & NA ) mail me and i will send them, it is easier to see, ( but i can’t mail until about tue/wed )”Jerry, is this what you mean…
Hi MrBlueSky, I’ve been collecting info on the Whirlwind to produce one for the flight sim X-plane, but some drawings like these you posted would be an immense help and far better than any I have at present. Any chance of a decent resolution copy?
Thanks
Steve
Thanks James,
You are right, and I had always thought that the Shoreham B25 was the Psychadelic Monster. Well well.
Steve
I don’t think the history in the link provided by Septic is correct as it says that the B25 went back to the US after filming. If that is true then which Psychadelic Monster was it that resided in a derelict condition for most of the 1970s at Shoreham airport. This aircraft ran up huge parking fines and was the subject of a national newspaper article before being sold off to the IWM at Duxford, and I believe is now the machine hanging in the USAF Hall.
Does this ring any bells with any one?
Steve
I’d love to get hold of a 3 view of a Rotodyne to put it into the x-plane sim!
There already is a version for X-Plane, in fact I think there are two! One for version 6 and the other for 7. Just search on http://www.X-plane.org and you should find them both.
