It would be great if just one thread around here wouldn’t turn into a troll fest.

A couple of great contradictions in that document. Page 3 tells us with a typical air to air config the jet will fly for two hours. Then page 7 tells us that on a combat air patrol the jet has a 500nm radius and 100min on station. See an issue there? The text on page 7 also states with a typical air to air config it can patrol for over two hours. No loads, weights, mission profiles or time in combat are provided.

Of course given the Gripen E has never flown all of this is just marketing…

They are obviously leaving something out. The two hour figure matches the article on the Swiss competition (projecting the Gripen E’s performance ). Their own graphics from the Brazil comp show 700… now they claim 800?

There is no way all of the claimed numbers are true without refueling.

Should also get him to factor in the 15% OEW increase that the Gripen E has had since those Brazilian figures were published.

…and it is worth noting that the chart doesn’t say specifically what sort of external fuel load we are talking about. It is almost certainly its maximum external fuel load ( 2 x 450 gallon tanks and 1 x 300 gallon tank), a load which would leave a Gripen totally incapable of actually performing like a fighter.

The F-35 meanwhile would be totally clean.

There is simply no way for a Gripen to win in a comparison of range/endurance/carrying capacity. It is a light weight fighter intended for short range operations.

    Consider…. http://aviationweek.com/site-files/aviationweek.com/files/uploads/2014/09/asd_09_25_2014_jas7.pdf

    8,000kg empty weight
    7,000kg of fuel
    +weapons
    16,500kg maximum takeoff weight.

They are proposing operating the jet just below its maximum takeoff weight for a “combat air patrol.”

once again L.M is referring to gripen C since F-35 cant compete with gripen E on range,
    save for heavy A2G loads.

the fact that L.M keep referring to C when in all competitions its up against E,
is telling, no different from giving data on VW when comparing to a Porsche, and pretend to be honest,
after all, its the same manufacturer

The Gripen E that wouldn’t be ordered for years after the analysis was done?

Besides, there is no chance that the Gripen E is going to add 50% real-world range to a Gripen C that was already carrying three tanks. (and that is in an air to air comparison, in an air to ground comparison it wouldn’t even be close)

Yes I know Canada is a program Partner.
Which obviously is too much for some People in here, as they now order SH. How dare them!!?

Seeing people trying their best to cast doubt about any urgency on behalf of Canada fighter procurement is sad. Like people in here know more and better than anyone in Canada’s defense Department and Airforce.

You have to forgive my stance, but i’ll take their word over the buthurt F-35 community here anyday of the week.

We are once again left to wonder whether you are playing dumb…

Trudeau said his government would run an open competition for new fighters. Now that he is actually in power they are claiming that there is no time for an open competition (even though the military clearly disagrees) and that a sole source order is the only option. Of course they haven’t even gotten a price quote on what the Super Hornets will cost so it is pretty obvious how much consideration has gone into this effort…

That snippet from the modelling done by LM is illuminating..there are so many posters on this forum who blow a lot of smoke about range and performance, but the real figures are nowhere near the exaggerated numbers that so many people quote liberally on the internet.

    How do you mean?

    Urgent need?
Lol, well the time table with F-35 program.. say no more.

If Someone with the stick in Canada say they are in urgent need, then let us believe there are.. or perhaps you would know what is best for Canada?(that was a retorical Q)

The stupid notion that all this is the PM decision alone is.. stupid. Reality is that within armed forces they are pretty ok with SH, for now.

Do you even read the threads you reply to?

It is the air force commander saying there is no rush… it is the politicians saying it is an emergency.

So is the Canadian government just trying to find a pretext for stalling the choice of a CF-18 successor?

The opposite, they are claiming there is an urgent need so they can buy a token Super Hornet force without honoring their campaign promise to have an open competition.

Wouldn’t disagree in principle, 9/11, patriot act so on.

Yet, Bush is happily sitting on his couch watching college football. Many of the NSA initiatives were challenged in court.

Democracy balancing freedom and security is an ongoing theme: Alien and Sedition act, Lincoln suspending Habeas Corpus, Schenek v. U.S, NYT v. U.S. Thing is, eventually balance is restored in democracy.

Above all the system continues to work in the US as shown by continued peaceful transitions of power, even between people who hate each other.

Pot/kettle.. When I think about it, this is EXACTLY what we have been observing in the US of A since ~2001.

Step five, impose overwhelming and all-embracing state surveillance of media, telephone calls, text messages and social networks.

    C- trolling.

Good to see that Russian state media propaganda roubles not going to waste. Neo-nazi existential threat….. hey if it ain’t broke.

Step one, convince population that they are besieged by enemies.
Step two, crack down on media/free speech.
Step three, restore “greatness” through militarization and expansion.
Step four, pass laws limiting freedoms and opposition citing said threats to homeland.

Think about it, why would anyone question Putin if they weren’t either a Nazi or a terrorist?

The only real difficulty is figuring out which one is which.

with modern FCS, drop tanks no longer need inbuilt Cg devices,
it compensates automatically for dropping 1 of 2 cruise missiles on each wing,
clearly it can handle the minor shifts within a fuel tank

    With your usual sourcing…

He is impervious to learning and will post the same tired charts and discredited theories of his ad nauseam.

Forget the fact that each successive generation of U.S. fighter development has departed further and further from the ideal sears-haak shape (and each with a higher Cd in the transonic). The F-15 having a considerably higher drag coeffecient than the F-104, F-4, etc. In spite of this, the F-15 has exceptional acceleration through the transonic.

Yep, wait a few weeks and he will repost it all gain.

It will be the same thing with the Gripen range discussion.
