There is no doubt an F-35A (free of constrains posed by commonality) would have been longer. I’m not sold on your theory that the wing would have been larger, that would have a cascade effect on design. I do think wingtips would be shaped differently, probably adding some area. The wing shape is very similar to the YF-22’s with reduced sweep. The F-35C certainly shows why simply adding wing area isn’t ideal from a performance standpoint.
Anyway it is what it is. The users are happy with the current performance, oddly in spite of forum commentary and YouTube analysis.
…and for probably at least the 10,000th time… the F-35 was never intended to deliver some new standard of aerodynamic performance. All of the research, studies, and modeling indicated that extreme maneuverability wouldn’t result in a great leap in combat effectiveness in a world with advanced air to air missiles, and that the added cost and complexity that would be required to achieve some new standard of maneuverability just wasn’t worth it.
The F-35 always prioritized stealth, sensors, and networking and accepted merely “good” kinematic performance to keep costs reasonable.
The airframes of the three variants are largely common, but more importantly their sensors, software, datalinks, etc, are essentially 100% common. (and this is where the large majority of the complexity of a modern fighter resides)
So what move did it do that a delta-duck couldn’t? I’m not asking for a friend since I saw the Paris demo in person.
Well, to start with, all the parts at high AoA… which is to say most of the show since the display was built around showcasing those abilities.
I don’t agree with Bayars but JSR posts are more or less wasting forum bandwidth
I think having the two of them going after each other is probably the best possible outcome.
So in the case components are sourced overseas, it’s not a big deal to Boeing shareholders indeed, but going with your example: US workers get 10$ worth of manufacturing. Shareholders (Carlyle?) get 50$ for sitting on their a$$e$, while China/Japan/Taiwan or whomever will get 90% worth of work. Commercial balance for the US : $-90. What’s not to like for the US taxpayer/Citizen/patriot/regular person that hasn’t been brainwashed by the media/school-system yet?
Not to mention the day your supplier decides he won’t sell you your stuff because he finally realized the treasure bonds he owns from you are worthless, you will be unable to replace the parts he made for you easily.
Seek an econ101 course, seriously.
Says who.. the Fitter pilot wont be around to tell his story would he?
:stupid:
Do you really think they just shot him down out of the blue?
Turn off RT for a little while and get some fresh air.
SA use their Gripens to stalk Rhino poachers:

The article also quotes a cost of 6-8k USD per flight hour however also says that the journo does not know what is actually included in that number.
If so that is a pretty terrible use of resources… that is a job for a Cessna.
I am actually very surprised that the Fitter pilot had the chance to even apply counterneasures. Given the horrible Situation Awareness of a Fitter..
Well, he was warned several times.
I belive those warnings when i see it..
Strange Neo Conservative Pentagon did not release a gun camera to CNN.
Neo Conservative Pentagon? Do you just type words at random? Even if the Pentagon had any such political philosophy, which it doesn’t, how would that translate into a decision of whether or not to release a tape?
Russia’s Tu-160M2 Bomber More Advanced Than Anything Pentagon Has In Its Arsenal
Sputnik…
Yes that’s what I understand. But I Misread the nbr of Aim9 launched. Still would be interesting to know how that one missed from half a mile.
Sometimes weapons just fail… it is true with everything from an RPG to a cruise missile. You hope for 90%+ reliability but the real world is a complicated place.
So which side of the fence are you on hopsalot? I didn’t see you condemn the US intervention in Syria so why comment on Turkey’s intervention in Iraq?
Or is that the real meaning of your nickname? Hopping over the fence all the time as you see fit?
I have never been a fan of the US involvement in Syria. I am pretty sure I have said that over the years.
I am just pointing out the obvious hypocrisy of Bayar getting all bent out of shape about the US being involved in Syria while defending doing the exact same thing in Iraq.
Iraq should first gets its own house under control before seeking to make threats/demands against the world’s 6th largest military power. Make no mistake the Turkish Armed Forces will continue with cross-border operations until Iraq prevents cross-border attacks on Turkey by the PKK and other proxies. The Iraqi Government needs to realize that there is only a finite time that Washington can protect Iraq. When the oil is finished the US will leave. However Turkey will always be a neighbour.
If Iraq continues its belligerence against Turkey it will have no drinking water within 10 years time. Turkey controls the flow from the Euphrates and Tigris.
Right, so like I said, a hypocrite.
You think Turkey has a right to operate in Iraq, arm and train proxies, etc, in support of its interests but get all bent out of shape if the US does the same in Syria.
What business does the US and other coalition forces have in Syria now that the threat of ISIS is being handled by the Russia-Iran-Turkey-Syria mechanism?
Under what Authority does the US Air Force shoot and down a Syrian Arab Republic fighter jet operating within Sovereign Syria?
Why is the US providing air-cover for a non-State actor in Syria? This is a blatant invasion using proxies.
Well I think we have had some kind of breakthrough recently… even MSphere has gone silent?
I don’t think it is voluntary. He went on a tirade a little while back (his usual, calling the F-35 a fat cow, etc) … and then he disappeared along with the posts.
Between his disappearance and Obligatory’s things have been better. More substantive discussions without so much idiocy.
Hopsalot- the Turkish Republic relies on Treaties signed by Turkey and Saddam Hussein and also agreements signed between the Turkish Republic and Britain.
Iraq signed an agreement that says Turkey can invade when it wants to? :very_drunk: Lets see it.
In any event, Turkey views the PKK a terrorist organisation that affects its national security and territorial integrity. If its neighbours cannot secure their borders and eradicate the PKK, Turkey can and will take its own steps even if it means entering these neighbouring countries to do the same. If the US can come from 20,000km away to eradicate terrorism so can Turkey on its doorstep.
Admit it, you are just a regular old hypocrite.
Whew, haven’t posted in years but have been lurking this thread. Despite what people on here and otherwise seem to think, LM is pretty good when comes to FCS and aero design. All this talk about it being a flying brick reminds me of those idiotic threads 10 years ago about the F-22 not being able to do a Cobra and getting shot down in dogfights by Super Flankers with plasma stealth. The F-35 isn’t perfect but it looks like it can get out of its own way. That pedal turn was pretty damn impressive for a non-TVC fighter.
Should be very comparable to the 4/4.5 gen fighters in the kinematics aspect which is undoubtedly the weakest part of the package.
Well that was always one of the puzzling aspects of the whole “debate,” that people here were insisting in effect that the designers at LM were a bunch of idiots that were creating a “flying brick.” This is the same company that has produced several of aviation history’s most successful and innovative designs, but they suddenly just forgot everything they know?
