Thats a shame, ‘snoopy’ should be preserved somewhere as it is. One of my favourite aircraft.

..but many people can’t see the point (boom, boom!) πŸ˜€

I take it this means that they will not be at Biggin Hill πŸ™ But well done for finally getting them back into the air πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Why Not? The are scheduled to fly at Biggin Hill around 1700 on Saturday, which will probably mean they will fly at Yeovilton early on in the flying programme, then go straight to Biggin and nitestop there ready for their Sunday slot which is around 1545.

Interesting photo’s thanks for posting them. So it would seem that this aircraft might well face the inevitable 😑 . It would be a real shame as this is the last remaining of its type. Let’s hope someone, somewhere sees sense and rescues her before she’s really beyond preservation.
Anyone know how accessible to the general public the aircraft is? It would be nice to go and have a good close look just to get an idea of the level of corrosion in existence.

It’s only just inside the main gate and you can see it from the road. If you call in at the gate office and asked nicely for someone to escort you over to it, I’m sure they will oblige.

XV208 has continued flying at Boscombe Down long after the Met. Research Flight finished with it. I believe that because it has such low flying hours, it will be deconverted back to a ‘normal’ Herk by Marshalls at Cambridge, then it may continue test flying, or be sold to another Air Force.

Yes, you can operate both from a grass strip, providing its dry, hard and smooth. Here are the “Poachers” team of JP T5s at Middle Wallop in July 1975.
I would guess the Team Leader visited the airfield the day before to assess if it was suitable and that there had been no rain.

Thanks for that. Thought this might be a good opportunity to go my archives and post some photos at different stages in XK699’s life, so you can see what we’re all talking about. First, here it is in service with 216 Squadron during a visit to London Airport in 1960. Next is a shot of her 26 years later, arriving at Lyneham on a lorry from storage at Henlow on 16th October 1986.
Finally, a shot as she is now on the gate at Lyneham, although I took this 12 years ago in March 1992! Paintwork is deteriotating and she looks pretty sad now as no one wants to look after her!

The query to the Hunter should have been the last picture. They came out in reverse order.

A few more pictures from Kemble yesterday and some from the Bristol Aero Collection including the Britannia nose G-ALRX that has been repainted since last time I saw it last year.

Well done Ian. Guess those shots are digital + wide angle! Very difficult to get shots in Bristol Aero Collection hangar as it’s so tightly packed! Let’s hope they get spaced out better when (and if!) they move the collection to Filton.

That list is fairly accurate, with just a couple that need updating.
#13 G-APMB is the white Comet 4B that has now been scrapped at Gatwick and #14 N888WA is almost completely restored to its original Mexicana livery as XA-NAR. Apart from that, you can see that XK699 at Lyneham is the sole Mk.2 survivor.

You have to forgive an ignorant Norwegian here, but is this a complete airframe, what is it doing at Lyneham, etc? I understand from the thread it’s still MOD property, has anyone tried to lobby for its survival? Just wondering, how many Comets survive today, both military and civil? Seem to remember an example sitting wingless (all white?) at a London airport (Heathrow, Gatwick?) when we taxied by. Am I totally wrong or has there been one like this?

    T J Johansen

Yes, this is a complete airframe and it stands on the gate at RAF Lyneham as this is where it flew from during the 1950s up until it retired in 1967. Quite a few Comets survive – Comet 1 at Cosford, Comet 4 at Duxford, Comet 4C at East Fortune and Bruntingthorpe, Comet 4C at Seattle, Comet 4B at Wroughton, but this is the very last surviving Comet Mk.2. The all-white wingless Comet you saw at Gatwick was a Mk.4B, which was used for ground handling and got scrapped only very recently.

I have also heard that when Lyneham closes, the Comet may be scrapped! This would be a tragedy, as there is no other Comet Mk.2 surviving. Not only that but I flew in XK699 when I was an ATC cadet. The obvious answer is to transfer it the short distance to Brize Norton, where 216 Sqn currently resides. Has anyone suggested this to them?

    Stranraer colour pics

This prompted me to look in my slide collection and dig out these three shots of CF-BXO at Sea Island, Vancouver on 4 May 1964.

    Enjoy!

Yes, they’re BOTH correct as they swapped the fin flash colours around on RAF aircraft in tyhe ’30s.

    Thanks Steve,

I am surprised how good they looked after scanning and up on the screen.

I hadn’t seen them for over 25 years and then only to hold up to the light.

I also found a bunch of slides of ‘Airwar 74’ from Windsor Ontario. They will need a bit of perk up with PSP, as from a different camera, but perhaps for posting in a week or so.

You can’t take them with you. πŸ˜‰

    Mark

It just goes to show that until the digital revolution, slides have always been the highest quality colour format. We just had to bide our time until technology allowed quality scanning so they can be fully appreciated.
Excellent? Do you have any older slides?

TG560 “Iris II” was replaced by another Hastings C.2, WJ338 “Iris III” operated by 115 Squadron. Here it is at Prestwick in June 1967 and landing at Odiham in September 1968. This in-turn was replaced by an Argosy E.1 “Iris IV” at Cottesmore, which I believe was the last in the “Iris” series.

Cracking shots! Any Old Warden show after that will be an anti-climax! They couldn’t do better than the Pageant…unless they fly the Humming Bird and the Lysander as well. BTW, does anyone know if the Flea will ever taxi again, as it appears to be hung up inside the hangar roof permanently!
