Indeed happy birthday to the Fat Albert but I cannot share Albert Ross’ passion for riding in them! I left the RAF in 2000 and I would never, ever, willingly get in one again! I have spent too many uncomfortable hours/days down the back-end. If I was lucky I could beat the GE to get my hammock up in the best position but normally would have to make do with trying to get comfortable on top of some ground equipment! And don’t don’t get me started on the white boxes! (These contained your entire food for the day’s flight; usually an already stale sandwich, a bag of crisps and an apple.)

I didn’t say it was ‘comfortable’, just that I missed the experience! I fully share your sentiments but never thought the ‘butty boxes’ were that bad. However, if you went to the States or Canada, the return-leg ‘butty boxes’ were always much better! Ah, memories!

Very nice pictures! Does anyone know the nickname for the CAF’s Dash 8? It’s something to do with its probiscus nose… 🙂

Wonderful reliable plane, the Herk. Shame that the RIAT 50th Anniversary Meet wasn’t anywhere near the 25th celebrations! Have flown in many RAF examples all over the world from Lyneham, have done tanking with Phantoms in the Falklands, have tanked from Herks, Victors and VC-10s and have flown to air shows many times with the Falcons. Watched this workhorse put through its paces in so many rough strips with such ease.
Here is a shot I took of XV292 in its special scheme to commemorate 25 Years of RAF Service, taken over RAF Lyneham in May 1992 from the open ramp of another Herk. I left the RAF in 1993 and dearly missing my flights in these.

Liked the tuft of grass on the Jackaroo’s tail skid!

Great stuff Tony! I didn’t know you could get that close at that end. I’ve always risked stopping on the A38 when they are landing over the top and got some good shots before getting moved on! Just for any nostalgia freaks viewing, here is one of those shots, a SPANTAX DC-7….which just skimmed a double-decker bus on the A38 taken in June 1967.

Looks like BA are not in a hurry to replace their world tail images on their training fleet and are concentrating on repainting the tails of their airliners first. Nice to see these shots for a change.

I’ll have to fire the old scanner up to properly contribute to this thread. Damn digital world we live in.

In the meantime, here’s a photo from a USO dance a few years back with my oldest daughter. Amazing what you can buy on ebay!

    Cheers,

    Steve

…but where is the aircraft, as per the theme of this thread, eh Flt.Lt,  Sir?

Any more pics at Lasham ?
I am told that there where F86’s lined up like that at Ascot, were thay moved there from Lasham when it closed or another batch ?
I will have to visit my old ATC Sqd. to see if thay still have the F86 tail which I left/donated with/to them, I still have some U/C doors & other panels still with there PR (?) Blue paint on

Regret those were the only shots I took. Next time I went there, everything had gone and the yard closed down. I presumed they had all been scrapped.

These drawings are from Profile Publications and this particular artist had a habit of interpreting b/w photos incorrectly and several errors have occurred within this series and the AIRCAM books. I would be extremely sceptical about these camouflage colours and treat any artwork with caution and believe nothing without colour photographs or other proof. I do most of the research for the Corgi Aviation Archive models and I have nothing to do with models ,if I do not have any colour photographs. One person’s artwork interpretation of a b/w photo is not enough!

Very interesting to see Brigand RH746 at Failsworth, Here is a photo of it now (or rather a couple of years ago) at the Bristol Aero Collection.

    http://www.filton.flyer.co.uk/images/rh746500.jpg

I hadn’t realised that at least one wing survived until so recently. I know the Bristol Aero Collection would love to get their hands on the wing, it would probably swing it for a restoration. The fuselage is still owned by Unimetals, the company who ran the scrapyard I believe. I don’t suppose anyone has any bits pilfered from it, like a wing?
    cheers,
    Andy A

You’re absolutely right about the owner of the Brigand who doesn’t want it restored!! 😮 They will allow the Bristol Aero Collection to have it as long as it stays as it is! Sacriledge!

Great pic Mark, I agree with David’s comments, fascinating, now I’m waiting for the other 13 pics Mark.

Any pics Steve ?, Staravia at Lasham was before my time & I had never heard of their Church Crookham yard, but I did visit their Ascot & Finchampstead yards. P-39 drop tanks still in crates in Ascot in the late ’70s ! Managed to ‘rescue a RCAF F-86 tail resplendent with its Tigers head Sqd motif. I also ‘found’ a new P-80 (yes P & not F) U/C door at Finchampstead amongst 1000’s of other brand new parts just before it was all lost in a fire 10 years ago.I was told that they also had a yard in Wales, but that had been raided & cleared out for scrap by gipsies

Thought I would help Steve out with a couple of photos I took at Lasham on a cold wintery day there on 8th February 1969, showing a line up of ex-RCAF Canadair Sabres and the tail of an RCAF T-33A. I nearly took the tail home with me, but it wouldn’t quite fit in my Mini!

Well…. if I stick my pedantic head on for a moment… the original question was; “If money was no object, which aircraft currently operating outside of the country you live in would you most like to import.” which doesn’t really specify that they have to be original operational machines. But I do take your point, in which case maybe I should have specified the Champlin Dora (which has been restored to an airworthy condition). Kermit’s B26 Marauder would also float my boat…

…well now you’re talking original rarities and these two definately get my vote 😉

Well, here’s the basic template in old BA colours.

I’ll be adding lots more detail over the coming days as I collect a database of photos that show me all the nooks and crannies

Getting all excited as this progressed, only to find you have done it in BA colours, instead of the BEA scheme she’s in! Any reason? 🙁

Oh no, I missed the Miles Hawk Trainer and the Tutor making its public debut in the air.
Wish I had known these would fly?
