…Piper Colt….preserved??? museum???
Albert Ross,
Is that the actual aircraft flown now in a museum or just the type?
Mark
The ACTUAL aircraft. Can you walk into a museum and say “I’ve flown in that one”. At Duxford, I have flown in the Airspeed Oxford there and in the RAF Jetstream preserved at Cosford, also the RAF Comet 2 on the gate at Lyneham.
This is probably the sight that Colerne is most remembered for, well at least by me! This is the last line up of 24 Squdron’s Hastings just before disbandment there in November 1967 and reformation at Lyneham with Hercules…..ah those were the days! Although it was a wet and windy day I just had to make a special trip there to take this photo.
I never served there Flight Sergeant, but I used to visit during its days as a Hastings station. Later on Hercules majors were carried out there and I went to one or two air shows, when the museum collection was dragged out into the open.
“Ditto” I reckon between Steve and I, we could produce photos taken at Colerne from the early-60s and throughout the ’70s. I went to many of their Battle of Britain air shows during that period and very good they were too!
James as you may know but others maybe don’t. The paint on the N/side buildings is of 1968 B of B vintage, not earlier. If you look it is only on buildings which were in camera shot…..
Prior to 1968 the buildingn were either plain brickwork or as with most of the south side MoD whitwash white!
Nice alternative view
Shhh! Don’t steal his thunder! He’s doing a wonderful PR job for IWM and they’ll give him another press pass for this!! 😉
We did a lot of work on them at Marshalls, it would be wonderful to see one at Duxford. I guess it is just the space that is the problem.
Is is true that Marshall’s are going to ‘deconvert’ ‘Snoopy’ from a W.2 back to a C.1 for the Austrian Air Force, as it has so few flying hours?
Philo – yep saw the 3 Hercs too – i think there was a flypast practice for the Queens birthday yesterday (C17, Tristar, C130s, Jags, Tornados etc) at Waddington so perhaps they were en-route back to Lyneham via the Oxfordshire countryside!
The three Hercs (all C-130Ks I think) flew several times over Swindon inbound to Lyneham on Wednesday around 1700.
Yes, I was being a bit unfair as I always do enjoy Legends and I know they try for something different each year. The biggest problem this year seems to be the Cambridgeshire Police’s idea of ‘traffic control’ which caused absolute havoc at the Duxford D-Day show today. Unless someone can reassure me I WILL be allowed to turn RIGHT into the first gate coming from Baldock, and not join the chaos coming off the M11, I won’t be going!
Antonov An-2 HA-ABA from Switzerland will be there
OOOH, ISN’T THAT BEAUTIFUL! CAN THE MOUNTAIN COME AS WELL?
Well Albert you have three choices:
1. Be among the first to see the extraordinary and unique line up of warbirds (yes – weather and servicability permitting) by coming on the Saturday.
2. Wait and see what is posted here on the Saturday evening and decide if you want to come on the Sunday and be in the second batch of people to see these amazing aircraft.
3.Don’t bother coming at all.
I hope you go for option 1 – I will be 🙂
I think weather and what’s there will make me decide, but I usually go on the Sunday anyway.
John,
On the subject of preserved Comets, it now concerns me what will happen to XK699 on the gate at Lyneham when the station closes? Will they put it on the gate at Brize Norton? Saw it last year up close and that badly needs a repaint also.
That last one could so easily be “at an airfield in England, June 1942” 🙂
Were Barratt building houses in 1942 and did we have electric pylons then?? 😎
Excellent stuff Darren, thanks for that! Although no sunshine, conditions look quite bright. I was at Old Sarum for the Auster & Piper Meet and we had a little sun until around 1300.
Hello Gnome,
At least you have a Dak in D-Day colours – ZK-DAK!
