They don’t make aircraft like this anymore…:(

That reminds me, does anyone know if “Strategic Air Command” is out on Region 2 DVD yet?

I would like to know about any dates for taxying also, as I’m sure others would. Seems it was beautifully painted up and now sits there doing nothing – what a waste!:(

    Great stuff! They are:

    Douglas C-54S 91999 U.S.Navy , detached to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, I think.

Two shots of Douglas DC-3, G-ALVZ. First one has a Saudia DC-3 in the background and second one another Gulf Aviation Dak.
‘VZ got broken up at Bahrain in 1970.

Then we have Fokker F.27 Friendship, G-AWFU of Gulf Aviation.
Gulf Aviation became Gulf Air and it got re-registered A40-FU in October 75 and ended its days with Burma Airways when it crashed on take-off from Rangoon 3-2-89.

BOAC VC-10 but can’t read the reg.

Westland-Bell Sioux AH.1, XT228 (sorry don’t know what happened to it)

and finally Westland Wasp HAS.1 XV623 from HMS Nubian.
    (probably both choppers scrapped)

…now there’s an idea! Why don’t they exchange the Seafire with one of the P-51s here in UK and both parties will be happy their plane is identified!

I complained to Heathrow PR Manager about the prolonged closure of the viewing terrace after 9/11 and received no reply!
They think the Heathrow Visitor’s Reception Area is good enough.
NO WAY! There is a road between that and the Airport with fence, too far away, into sun! The viewing terrace was superb!
Anyone else complain to Heathrow about this and got a reply?

Has anyone queried some of the diverse and inappropraite subjects in the “Milestones of Flight” hall, like the Tempest TT.5 and Kawasaki Ki-100? Hardly ‘milestones’ ? Surely a Hurricane and Meteor would be more appropriate?

I would like to see it where it would be appreciated most…. here in UK. I can imagine many Americans looking at it and saying, “Gees, what’ s that? Have you repainted the “Red Baron” RP-51 Mustang”?? 🙁

To be fair, when VP441 was at Culdrose during the mid- to late-60’s, it did not belong to the Royal Navy. At that time, it was owned by the Historic Aircraft Preservation Society (HAPS).

HAPS had persuaded the Air Engineering Dept at Culdrose to restore the aerolane to a reasonable static condition for display purposes. They made quite a good job of it.

It is, however, a great pity that more interest was not shown towards the aircraft in the early-70’s, when it was still in the UK.

    Laurie.

Thanks for that Laurie. I always thought the Fleet Air Arm owned it when at Culdrose and I believe it was bought by an organisation called Reflectair and it resided at Blackpool and Laverton, gradually deteriorating. How wonderful to see it looking like this again. What would it take for them to bring it to the UK for Flying Legends at Duxford and to Yeovilton?
