It is quite clear to me where these slides were taken, as I recognise all these from the “50th Anniversary of Military Aviation Air Show” that was held at RAF Upavon on 16th June 1962. I was there at the age of 12 and had just started ‘spotting’ . It was a fantastic air show and I remember seeing everything you have shown. I think this was one of the last times the Fulmar flew before it was grounded and put in the FAA Museum. The Sea Vixens are “Fred’s Five” aerobatic team from 766 Squadron. The entire Shuttleworth Collection machines were there and the Sycamore was from 118 Squadron RAF doing traffic patrols during the day.
Hope this helps.
I worked on a couple of wartime R N Proctors both of which were in the Navy scheme of dark Grey & Green, Duck egg Blue underside, ROYAL NAVY was in black at the rear of fuselage, as was the A/C serial —
Dustyone
Very interesting Dustyone! I assumed from the b/w photos they were in RAF camouflage of dk earth/dk green with yellow undersides, but the colours you describe make more sense. Can you confirm the undersides as ‘duck egg blue’, rather than duck egg green (alias ‘Sky type S’) and do you, or anyone have any photos?

Well, that just about covers everything……end of thread!!:D
Does anyone know if the Iraqi Air Force ever had an aerobatic team? I have seen a photo of a Tucano in a hangar painted very similar to the Brazilian Air Force Esquadrilha da Fumaca aerobatic team…co-incidence? Perhaps mm2000 knows the answer?
CC.2 XS794 wore RAF Transport Command titles from delivery until 1st Sept.1967 when operated by the Metropolitan Comms Sqn. at Northolt.
I spoke to a friend of the family in Sussex police and he confirmed no police budget would be allocated to development of any viewing area as there is “no budget for development of a commerical entity even when return may be made to the force”..
No one said anything about a police budget? It is up to the police to work with BAA to make this happen. It is in both their interests and WILL make money for both.
As to your point about off airport locations, this would be very much a white elephant. Who is going to go to an area off the airport to take photos etc when they can do it for free in the same area just outside of the viewing area.
What would you prefer, park your car and have to walk for miles to find somewhere that has no facilitities, food, toilets or shop and is on a busy road where you get hassled by police OR park your car in a dedicated car park, walk a few yards and enjoy all the above facilities in perfect peace and safety? Unless you adopt a positive attitude to this, it will indeed never happen.
Saw Andrew Dixon at the Gatwick Aviation Enthusiast’s Fair on Sunday and he was very excited at the prospect of the Sea Prince flying this year, so it is something we can really look forward to seeing.

yes its a shame (have fond memories of basic training at swinderby and doing duty airman at watton QUOTE]
Yeah fond memories……..running round the airfield being shouted at by some sad PTI who I’d dearly have liked to meet one night when I was wandering round Honington with an SLR! Bedpacks flying out of windows, German measle epidemics, buffing floors endlessly, delicious food…not and those psycho Rock-Apes who’d obviously all been affected by spending too much time getting some extra cash at Porton Down. 😀
Watton duty airman, did you ever work out how to put people through on that switch board thing? Boy I must have cut a lot of people off on that. And was that place creepy when I lived there for 5 months through the winter of ’83. Great place for giving the bike a damn good thrash down the runway though! Ever go in “The New Inn”, the pub that time forgot. Even the landlady was covered in cobwebs! 🙂
Well, well small world! I also was at Swinderby in 1971 and had to endure the basic training, not to mention the bromide they put in the tea!! I also ended up at Watton on Eastern Radar ten years later. I know two friends who married girls they met in the “New Inn”…and both are now divorced:(
I dont deny at all that a viewing area is a good thing and I would love to see one at both airports but i think im being realistic in my views over LHR.
Of course there is a need for viewing at LHR but that doesnt mean they will have the same view of it as LGW do and this is down to security. (we can rule out money given both airports have same owner)
For example LHR has the Royal Reception Centre. This is extremely high security area and only used for our and visiting high ranking royals, presidents, diplomats etc. Does LGW have one of these? No..
Wasn’t The Royal Reception Centre open when Heathrow had roof-top viewing facilities?
On the note of an area controlled by security forces, i am confident when i say we can rule out anything on Manchester AVP scale as there simply is not the room. At Heathrow it is surrounded by roads and buildings and at Gatwick there is either a thick section fo trees/bushes or buildings. ..
There is certainly room adjacent to the Westerly runway approaches at LHR! Open fields in fact! Exactly the same at LGW at Charlwood end, which could link into the aircraft museum there.
Remember areas are never airside and this means locations are highly limited. They are not going to let people wander down a pier to a specific gallery with a good view just because of a pass…. ..
No one said they would?
In principle a good idea but really its not an interest to the police in creating an area. Nor is it something that is within their budget. .
That’s the complete opposite to Gatwick Airport Police’s view! It IS in their interest in co-operating with aircraft enthusiasts to provide a viewing area and in return revenue from this would be raised for the police AND BAA. It is nothing but a ‘win-win’ proposal that needs every support.
OK – I’ll let you get away with putting my beloved Pussy Cat in historic as long as you add the rider ‘RAF or French Air Force’ – come on, the Indians are still making them!
Are the Nigerian and Ecuador Jags still in service?
If you are building a model or painting the real thing, this is an extremely useful site:
http://ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_uk.htm
Scaling it from the photo posted, I make the total width of the band 457.2mm = 18″ and the width of the dark blue bands 38.1mm = 1.5″ making the light blue band 15″ wide.
This is assuming the static pitot outlet plate is the same size as our T4, 6″ wide with the hole in the middle.
Well done Ted, that’s just what I was going to suggest. Print off my photo and paint yours to match it. Here’s a another idea – there is a JPT5 (XW353)on the gate at Cranwell. The blue band is the same size, so why don’t you go and measure it?
AT LAST – COMMON SENSE PREVAILS!:D:D:D
Do you know how I can put my name down for one those ID cards you metioned?
If only they [BAA and the local police] would do the same for Heathrow…
Unfortunately, I filled in the application form and left it with them, not thinking to get a spare copy to scan for the forum. However, if you print off the scanned letter and send it to the name and address at the bottom, together with your name, address, place of birth, date of birth, phone number,e.mail address and any comments about this idea, I’m sure that would be fine.
I did mention that they should get together with Heathrow to do something simililar there, but the whole issue revolves around money as usual! Gatwick Airport Division of Sussex Police are looking at ways to raise funds for themselves and the Airport and at the same time getting enthusiasts ‘on board’ to identify any suspicious ‘non-enthusiast’ behaviour around the airport. Alas, Heathrow is manned by the Metropolitan Police who are funded by Central Government and couldn’t care less whether there is a viewing area for enthusiasts or not. They would rather waste their time patrolling the perimeter and harrassing those innocently enjoying our hobby! I tried addressing this issue with the BAA PRO at Heathrow, who just said ‘public viewing areas closed on government advice’…point blank!
Also had a good visit there yesterday. The collection’s open day nicely co-incided with the Gatwick Aviation Enthusuiasts’ Fair at Crawley, so several enthusiasts made their way to Charlwood in the afternoon. Met Peter Vallance who was just deciding on what scheme to paint the Sea Hawk in, which is currently stripped to bare metal for painting. Apparently a Suez scheme is going to be applied. Shame this collection is still under threat from Mole Valley District Council and its future is uncertain.
When I read the title of this thread, my heart sank! With so many aviation legends leaving us recently, I thought this was bad news! Delighted to read such an upbeat posting, as this man seems immortal! I have also had the pleasure of visiting his house several years ago, where we pushed his entire Autogyro collection on to the lawn one Sunday morning for me to photograph. I cannot speak highly enough of this man, who just couldn’t do enough for me and met every request.
