Albert, I agree a in depth history of the chipmunk is needed.although Bill Fisher does a good job with his book Chipmunk the first 50 years,he was assisted by Rw Brown andT Rothermel,in this book he list all chipmunks built with con nbrs and current status.
This info is also availiable in the Chipmunk club handbook.
My proposed book is expansion of my previous one wher i want to obtain photos and comments from people who have flown the chippy as a pilot or
passenger. The title will be Chipmunk Memories.
Okay, does doing aerobatics as a passenger with Birmingham UAS Chipmunk formation team count?
I learnt this in school… I before E except after C. So…Furies. 😀
…except there is no ‘C’ in Fury. If I was your teacher, I would be furious with you! 😡
It’s a question!
Good replies folks.
For what it’s worth, I’ve personally never liked the ‘Fury MkIs’ approach, and try to avoid it when writing. It implies the existance of the Fury Mk.I type ‘s’. Keep the plural to the name, rather than the designation.
Cheers [Plural of cheer 😉 ]
Yep, I’ve also never liked the Fury Mk.1’s approach, especially when it comes in one wing low! :diablo:
Okay, what’s the plural of Wessex….Wessexes, Wessexs, or Wessi?
Macfire,
Attached is a shot of NZ5804 obviously taken before its demise on 09/09/55 but I do not know where. I worked on all the other three RNZAF Hastings, first at Dishforth and then at Thorney Island, whilst with 242 OCU. They used to fly them over for servicing and I can recall spending hours polishing the bare metal skin.
Glyn
My guess is this was taken at Heathrow in 1953, as the ’22’ tail code is its London-New Zealand Air Race Code and you can see the KLM DC-6 coded ’21’ beside it. Here is a photo taken at the same time.
Sorry to say I do not know where any of the pics were taken as they are not mine. As to 6 being 70 sqdn I am not too sure as in my time at Nicosia 57-60 its aircraft did not carry Royal Air Force Transport Command markings and the picture is certainly not taken in Cyprus(not that that may be meaningful) but looks more like somewhere in the UK.
Glyn
Glyn, I think my list of locations is pretty accurate. Also this ‘mystery squadron aircraft I believe to be 114 Squadron, which operated Hastings from Colerne between 1959-61. However, I don’t recall any hangars with trees beside them at Colerne, so guess this is probably at Abingdon.
I think both the Chipmunk and the Auster in general (not just AOP.9s) are badly in need of more than just a pictorial publication on each. They need an in-depth history book with photos and production lists with cross-references. Does anyone out there have a production list of these two types? Bill Fisher is the expert on Chipmunks and produced a pictorial book several years ago. Ian O’Neil is supposed to be doing a book on the Auster…..one day!!
bazrac the frenchverticial test aircraft may spelling is wrong but right aircraft lol dragline
Yes, I know what you mean. I actually think it is a cross between the Dassault Balzac and Fairey Delta 2.
Good to see the Hastings recognised. Let me guess some of those locations:
TG604 – Colerne
TG513 – Abingdon
TG503 – Finningley
WJ333 & ‘325 – Changi
The last one has got me stumped!
In that case, if my friend Google is to be believed, Biggin Hill.
Correct! It was taken in the static park at Biggin Hill’s BoB Air Day 19th September 1964 and here is all the rest of the gen you’re all dying to know!
It was built of plywood and wood and powered by no more than a 500cc motorcycle engine to enable it to taxi. When it was hovering, it was suspended on wires (‘Fly-by-wire’ 😀 ) from a crane. You can just about see the wires in this pic.
I guess Northolt.
BTW, as I may have mentioned before, Google is my friend. 😀
Nope – it’s at an air show! Don’t think Northolt have ever had an ‘air show’ as such?
Well done, Don Clark is the winner! Indeed it is the sole Scott-Furlong Predator, XS341.
Once the serial is revealed, it’s all downhill as everyone rushes to the reference books! Now just one more question, where and when was this taken?
Sovereign – XS341
Getting very close! Sovereign was an airliner made by the same company, but serial is correct for this one. What was the manufacturer and the name of this aircraft.
Well done Septic, you’re right, but what was it’s name and what year was it? Also where could this have been taken?
Fairy Delta?
Nope! Look at the second photo clue? Intakes above fuselage and undercarriage leg underneath fuselage.
Ooooh, this is going to be tricky! Another clue, you would have to be British and at least 40 to have seen this?
