Cranfield today!
The new scheme for the port side of XS458 has now become clear, as it was doing engine runs and taxying today at Cranfield. The scheme is basically 92 Squadron although they never used T.5s! The ‘flags’ down the fuselage are Lightning squadron markings in miniature. I take my hat off to the painters as this must have taken ages! Well done chaps! ….but how about doing it in a scheme that T.5s wore? That 226 OCU red/white scheme was BEAUTIFUL! 😎
Very nice pics for a first attempt. Is air-to-air any harder than ground-to-air? other than obtaining an aircraft as a camera ship.
I shot these a few years ago, as soon as G-SIXC came out of the paint shop in the new livery at Coventry. Mount was Atlantic’s Cessna 404 G-EXEX. Most important NOT to shoot something so important through glass/perspex, due to distortion, reflections, cloudiness and discolouration reducing the quality. With the rear window removed, next important consideration is to shoot as high-enough shutter speed to counter any vibration, but not too high so as to stop the props. If you poke the lens too far out, you will get buffeting but if too far back, you could get the window frame in. Ensure both aircraft are heading in the right direction with the sun on your subject and brief both pilots thoroughly beforehand on hand-signals to be used for where you want him positioned. These shots were done for Air Atlantic and appeared on their publicity material and website, plus you probably saw them in all the aviation magazines. 😎
What a bit of luck! It makes you wonder how many photos and slides get thrown away by families who have no idea of their value after they have been lovingly cherished by the deceased for years! Well done Steve!
Great stuff! You can flood the forum with arty shots from current air shows, but seeing shots of well-preserved rare aircraft is something else and fascinating. Did you see Franco’s Dragon Rapide, G-ACYR?
Quite agree Mark. His instant decision to ‘stick with it’ saved himself, a VERY expensive brand-new aircraft and RIAT from being cancelled!
I put this question to the Information Office at Fairford a couple of weeks ago during the Fairford Aviation Society’s Meeting. Apparently, it has been sold to a ‘museum’ and they are waiting for him to arrange transport to collect it.
John,
Cracking shots! They are all my favourites, but partcularly like the Apache – shot with flare :p – and the “Team Agullia Aviojets crossing.. Well done! Any more?
Great Apache shot! I missed this on Saturday but was ready for it today!
The last two SRN-4 Hovercraft were withdrawn from service in September 2000. I made a special trip down to Dover just a couple of weeks before their withdrawal, to capture these unique beasts. They are both at Lee-on-Solent and there are rumours they have been sold, but are still there under the care of the Hovercraft Museum. All British Military hovecraft had serials within aircraft ranges and they have always been regarded as more aircraft than ships as they can ‘fly’ anywhere on land and well as sea.
I watched the Typhoon from the rear and as he came out of a steep dive, he didn’t leave much room to pull out. As he curved round in the ‘pull out’ he was still going DOWN! 😮 As he was very close to impact, he quickly lit the afterburner which saved him! Following that, apparently he was told to terminate his display, land and report to the Flight Safety Committee, following which he climbed to 5000 ft to burn off fuel and compose himself, followed by a normal landing. A VERY nasty moment!
In July 1975, I saw the “Poachers” aerobatic team with Jet Provost T.5s operate from the grass at Middle Wallop. Providing it’s dry and hard, there is no problem.
I was in a dilemma on Saturday, as I planned to go to this event, the on to Legends afterwards, but the weather on Saturday morning made me abandon both and wait for the glorious weather on Sunday for Legends. Shame I missed the Demon. If anyone has a spare colour slide of it, would they be kind enough to PM me for a trade or purchase?
Did anyone hear anything about when it will fly, as I believe it has a fully restored Kestrel engine, or perhaps ‘being’ restored? I can’t wait to see a formation of Hind, Nimrod & Demon at Old Warden!
Hopefully, not much more than fabric recovering. Time for a colour scheme change perhaps?
Why on earth didn’t this get more publicity? Didn’t see a thing on the News and don’t think it even made Sky News. What a wasted opportunity for a news story? BTW, thought it was due to come to Duxford this weekend?
A Shame I haven’t got a long lens!
Nothing wrong with those shots that a long-lens wouldn’t improve? Well done!
