If you asked the general public, I would think Bader – and Gibson as a distant second – would be the only names that many could come up with.
I think I agree – if you could fast-forward a hundred years there would be but a few battles “that saved England/Britain” that the general public could quote: Agincourt, Trafalgar, Waterloo and Battle of Britain and for the latter I reckon Bader will be remembered easiest.

Anyone else going?
Would be interesting to hear of forum members who are with a BAPC member organisation but hadn’t been informed about the event.

I was mistaken 😮 – it wasn’t ‘IDL’s first post-restoration flight, she flew briefly a couple of weeks ago but the engine(s) still wasn’t right.
All’s well now though she did two passenger flights today – the penultimate day of Airbase at Coventry

By my watch take off at Coventry 15.17, landing back at 15.26.
I think Consul might have been ‘official’ photographer – if so hope we might get a pic later?
Met Tango-Charlie who was present to watch.

Got mixed feelings about what’s being done.
They only appear to have recovered a small percentage of the remains of the seven/five men which means a large percentage are left behind in (or beyond) the excavated area.
I think it would be preferable to inter the recovered remains IN the excavation and then erect a memorial as close to the site as is practicable.

……and the DC-6 Diner 🙂

Is it known if they will be displayed in the air again – ie “Shuttleworth Uncovered” display on 22nd September?
Or are the two dates (today and next Sunday) it, finito!

You’d need a lot of balls to do that “OY”
Unless you can find a spring exactly the right diameter I would have thought sand would be best. It would need to be totally dry though – one of the few things I remember from college is that the volume of dry sand increases dramatically with the introduction of even a slight amount of moisture.

Questions, questions!
Staying with the Snipe does anyone know where the Bently B.R.2 engine was sourced from? I can make out on the plate “Humber, Coventry” is it also marked as “1”.
I think that engine might have been on display at the Midland Air Museum for some years (on loan from Coventry’s Transport Museum????)

The only confirmed appearances so far are September 2nd at Old Warden and September 8/9 at Duxford
Will the weight of CAA paperwork have matched the weight of the aeroplanes by September 2nd? Will Shuttleworth pilots need conversion to type (or is there a pilot coming from NZ)?
I also find it difficult to believe that TVAL and Shuttleworth would go to all this trouble for just three days flying.
Anyone know why the Snipe is, apparently, not to fly?

May I be first to welcome you to the Forum and to thank you for posting an excellent set of photos.
There’s real artistry in many of them – the Mariner with the sea swell in the foreground is fabulous.

Short answer – no……….Fibreglass on Vampire cockpits annoys me too……….
When we originally restored Vampire F.1, VF301, I remember being suprised at the amount of filler that had been applied to the wings – obviously during construction – lbs and lbs of it.
