From the little bit I heard when she arrived I didn’t draw the impression of any change of ownership.

Banupa – I thought everybody knew where AIRBASE was 😀 😀

An interesting thread – there’s a good book hiding in it somewhere 🙂

Alertken’s references to Rolls-Royce’s opposition to ‘diluting’ their skills is interesting and answers a question I had thought about as to why only Bristol aero engines seemed to be built in the shadow-factory system.

Several factories in Coventry (ordinary and shadow) built parts for and whole Bristol engines. Alertken “assembly at 2 sites: Austin/Longbridge and Rootes/Ryton: 67,000 Bristol types, parts from Daimler/Rootes/Rover/Standard” However I believe Daimler and Standard both assembled complete Bristol engines – indeed Standard Cars’ Banner Lane shadow factory (most rcently used by Massey Ferguson and only demolished 3 – 4 years ago) had engine test cells – as did Rootes (Humber/Hillman) at Ryton.

Does anyone know of production totals for the Bristol radial types to compare with the Merlin? Napier built 5000 Sabres all apparently within house (“By Precision into Power” Vessey – 1500 at the Acton works and 3500 at the Liverpool shadow factory). This leaves Armstrong Siddeley with the Cheetah (and Tiger?) and de Havilland with the Gypsy Major and Gypsy Queen to cover all major British engine producers?

Talking of only aero engine production the scale of it is staggering – let alone all the actual airframes and other component manufacture.

I would prefer historical accuracy and Merlin3945’s suggestion of a note at the end of the film is the very least the producers could do.

Perhaps they could call the dog/codename Niger – much nearer to the correct one.

It’s all about context – I too have used the names (and more) merlin3945 refers to but, mostly, in an inoffensive way. I don’t think anybody means or takes offence at the word “Japs” today but 50- 60 years ago it was a name of hate. My father (who fought through France. Belgium and Holland) used to say “the only good German is a dead one” I think, if he were alive today, he would not say (or think) it any longer.

We all have opinions about people from other countries – or even different regions of our own country – in varying degrees.

Let’s not forget when Gibson named his dog and chose the codeword it was American white soldiers abusing, segregating and beating up their fellow countrymen because their skin was black.

I, and I assume all the other delegates, enjoyed a computer generated film of a Griffon internals operating at the RRHT AGM a couple of months ago – it was superb (sound as well).

According to the ‘bible’ by Bruce (“British Aeroplanes 1914 – 1918”) Blackburn built 108 examples (if my maths is correct) of the BE2c.

Aircraft no 10000 was the last of a batch of 50 for the Admiralty. I can’t remember seeing a five number serial number on an aircraft from that period before – I wonder of it was unique? (a system with a letter and four numbers followed)

I suspect an enlargement of the badge on the fin will be Blackburn Aircraft.

No idea as to the location I am afraid.

Mention made of Lockheed Hercules or Lockheed Electra.

I’ve never heard these two types together – I wonder how similar they sound?? Perhaps an idea for an airshow organiser to put a demo of the two together.

Ian, Have you been in contact with the Norfolk and Suffolk Air Museum?

They have quite a large display on RAF air-sea rescue if I remember rightly. They may be able to put you in touch with others from that time?
