The series is a bit odd – halfway through he appears with a broken arm. No explanation but it seems he broke it while filming in the Amazon “breaking his arm whilst preventing his not inconsiderable weight from plunging into the murky depths of the Amazon River”.

So he went further south than the southern states?

I think we are seeing it presented in a different order to it being filmed – he had his hair cut in one episode and a short while later had long hair again.

Echoing Bob’s comment about a London Taxi driving around AMARG – it made a funny sight pulling up in front of the Mustang Ranch too 😀

As no one else has taken up John A’s clue I’ll play the part of the “innocent passer-by” and suggest SSh = Siemens Shukert (spelling? – sure it’s Sch though?).

Hope I am not right though – haven’t a new image to post to suitably baffle you experts.:)

…..The first one is very Bristol Boxkite…..John

talk about “coals to Newcastle” :D:D surely it’s a Farman (or some other French type).
I do wholeheartedly agree though there is a distinct (and lamentable) lack of English-language printed material on the French Aviation industry.

What an exciting acquisition. Yes, MORE please.

Can’t we persuade Air Atlantique to add it to their fleet and do passenger flights/airshow appearances 🙂

Czech airmen at work, at rest and play and in death.

An appropriate time to post a wonderful collection of photos.

Are they all the work of the same photographer (Ladislav Sitenský?) to call them “arty” would be demeaning but there are many cases where trouble appears to have been taken to get certain views.

Is the book a recent one (ie still available)?

Preservation & Perseverance – two similar words that, in this case, sit together well.

That makes three (maybe four) pairs of wheels/tyres then:

Bristol Museum and/or Kemble, MAM and a set on external display at the Dunlop aviation tyre factory, Fort Dunlop, Birmingham.

Looking at the pic of the Ashton set me wondering if there was any design link between it and the 748?

    Thanks Ralph,

    I’ll add those in.

One problem is “63103” – I had already got this one as being a Mk. VIIB ex Gloster IVB 1927 Schneider Racer (info from Derek James’ “Gloster Aircraft…”). However the e-mail from NPHT say this is the engine they own (currently at Solent Sky) and it’s no, is 63101. What was your source – any comment?

    List Mk. 6 is ready

Stuart, thanks – if you can get any numbers that would be great. You mention “the Napier has pride of place in the display window” – are the engines on public display?

Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust, Bristol – e-mail from Peter Pavey says they did have a Lion on loan from the RAFMuseum but it was returned about 10 years ago. That makes it Mk.V (no. 23815) currently on display at Hendon.

Napier Power Heritage Trust – thanks go to Roy Gasson and their Archivist. They also consider the Shuttleworth Lion a Mk.V.
My presumption that the Lion Mk.VIIB originally listed as at Brooklands is the one at Solent Sky NPHT confirm as correct and they do own the engine. They give an engine no. 63101 for this – at variance with that quoted in Derek James’ “Gloster Aircraft….”
NPHT’s Archivist has also kindly supplied a list he made up some years ago of the differences between the various Mks. of Lion.

Still hoping to hear from Manchester University, Seaham ATC and Shuttleworth.

    Photo 41 – Meteor F.4.

It’s got the trolley acc attached as though ready to start up yet the rear section of the canopy appears to be sitting on the ground on the right of the picture.

Though I never knew him personally it is sad news.

Just one contribution to to aircraft preservation I will recall – it was a tip-off from Alan that led to the Midland Aircraft Preservation Society acquiring Meteor F.4, EE531 (then stored at Lasham) from the MoD.

    A great loss, Roger Smith
