Something else to consider – we have four national museums who are concerned with the preservation of historic aircraft…….
    Bruce

    Actually, it’s six I think:

    Army Air Corps Museum
    Fleet Air Arm Museum
    Imperial War Museum (3 sites)
National Museum of Scotland (name right?)
Royal Air Force Museum (2 sites)
    Science Museum (2 sites)

The Beverley is a good example but it would be unfortunate if those at Fort Paul might think there is criticiscm from some of the comments made here.

What other “large” British aircraft might be at long-term risk of extinction? We have at least one example of each of the V-bombers under cover, a Shackleton, several Comets, a Trident and Concordes are also indoors. What about the BAC 1-11, VC.10 and Avro 748? Others??

We all too often look at such problems with blinkers on.

£150K was suggested as a figure to house an aircraft the size of the Beverley – I think that is somewhat conservative. There always seems to be the presumption that the only way to preserve is complete – ie fully assembled.

Occasionally there are moans about, for example, the F-105 at Duxford not being assembled and on display. I would rather have four rare types preserved in a dismantled state than two preserved and two extinct.

If it doesn’t hurt when you stand up, the straps aren’t tight enough

    [QUOTE=J Boyle;1288392 ……That 99p kit …..[/QUOTE]

Yep I agree with Tangmere – 1s 6d was my first buying price. I experience a sharp intake of breath when I see the new prices of kits nowadays – how do they compare to what 1s 6d was worth in the late 1950s??

Good subject proposal IMHO. Could start with pre-war Frog Penguins (have a few in the loft somewhere), their importance for aircraft recognition training (by all sides) during WW2 (I know they were mostly wooden models) then the post-war “boom” with the introduction of Airfix. I know there were early plastic kit manufacturers in other parts of the World (Lindbergh and Aurora in the USA) to continue the international theme.

I would think a good chance of some sponsorship (or maybe help in kind) from Airfix?

    Go for it!!

Fascinating. Don’t know whether any of the Vulcan books have anything about proposed/hoped for foreign sales but would make a great magazine article.

IIRC “Gone tech” is a US (as in country, not serviceable state) term – when something got broken or didn’t work as it was meant to it was always “U/S” in my day…

Perhaps the Yanks found it confusing having “gone U/S” and “gone US” :diablo::diablo:

Does that go for the RR Gnome powered SEA KING?

The Gnome wasn’t, originally, a R-R design was it? – neither was the Sea King a Westland design??:)

    Rob,

The “upper centre section” is from and R.E.8 – there is also a piece of fuselage frame (and an aileron I think) as well. These pieces represent, I believe, the RAFMuseums total stock of R.E.8 bits. The vast majority of the 4,400 R.E.8s built were built in Coventry.
The Bentley Rotary is, I think, the first B.R.1 (not R.O.1) and built in Coventry (by Humber?).
There is a duplicate set of Brabazon wheels on external display at the Dunlop tyre plant (Fort Dunlop) in north Birmingham.

I don’t think I can improve on previous comments in this thread, just that I found it emotional. Thanks for writing it Moggy.

    Pacific Abyss
    Sun 17 Aug, 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm 60mins

Kate Humble and a team of 30 top natural history filmakers and deep water marine biologists set sail on a 2000 mile adventure across the Pacific. Kate dives to some of the most intact World War 2 shipwrecks, while it’s one drama after another for the deep dive team in their quest to find new species in the depths. [S]

    Makes a change from t!ts I suppose…..

You’r not suggesting Kate Humble is anything other than a woman?
