If no one comes up with anything better you could contact the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust – Bristol Branch.
Havent got contact details to hand but can find if you want them.

Nick, I couldn’t find an e-mail address and, in the end, lifted the following off their website. Peter Pavey is the Bristol Branch Secretary.

James “Top Gear” is repeated on Monday or Tuesday evening – starts 7pm.

Actually “Antiques Roadshow” is usually repeated (a week or two after initial broadcast) very late at night in the “sign here” series for for persons who can’t/have difficulty hearing.

“Antiques Roadshow” Tonight, Wednesday, at 00.50am on BBC1 from east Kirby – don’t know if the first or the second programme.

The Shackleton on display in the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry belongs to the RAFM. When there was talk of the MSI changing/reducing the size of their exhibition a couple of years ago I was told, had it been available, it would have gone into Cosford’s Cold War display in preference to the Hastings.

can we see that one Roger, please

    Cheers

    Cees

I’ll try Cees but don’t expect too much.
    a) I have to find it – and my photos/slides that far back aren’t catalogued (indeed it might even be amongst my slides which are at MAM that I do not have access to)
    b) I would then have to find someone to scan it.

Not long after MAM acquired Vampire F.1 VF301 (c. 1972) we visited a scrapyard in Bedfordshire where a considerable amount of aircraft and parts had been taken to from the RAFMuseum. We did a spares recovery on an early Vampire but the other bits there included a substantial rear fuselage section of a Stirling – have a colour slide of it somewhere.

It’s a gloriously strange looking aircraft – would love to see it in the air.

….Think it should be up here though, close to all the Bomber Command stations in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. Dean.

Disagree Dean – as a national memorial it should be in the nation’s capitol where due homage can be paid rather where just the locals will see it and veterans might struggle to get to.

I found the Newsnight report both fascinating and disturbing (as I did the report from Scotland – the bloke had obviously misunderstood the term “old bike” 😀 ) but agree about the old footage. Cosford got a ‘plug’ as well with some filming next to the Valiant.

The reporter played on the fact it was a ‘bicycle lock’ but when introduced for use on the bomb I imagine it was ‘state of the art’ lock technology.

Do I spot another difference comparing JDK’s photos – there appears to be no wing sweepback on the Sea otter (presumably altered for the change in c of g in moving the engine forward?)

….What I did find a bit disturbing was the way a lot of people seem to be assuming that anyone who now goes near the site is a potential theif – I live within a a couple of hours drive of the site and would love to go and record it photographically before any attempt is made to “recover” it – but fear registration nos etc are likely to be taken? and should some total pratt go and try anything, I could end up a suspect simply because of my involvement in the hobby – So I will have to stay away 🙁 . ….

Nick, don’t show fear of “big brother” that’ll mean we are one tiny step nearer an authoritorian (??) state – you are innocent until proved guilty. Go take your photos – if I lived nearer I would.
