You know mate I even searched the SBS trying to find that craft, I see what you are talking about those- facinating. I don’t know what you guys call it, but we call it a fly bar, mainly because we used to fly the flag from there on our boats.

That pic I posted came directly from the Royal Navy website where I found it searching for RHIBs 😉 It matched perfectly the one you posted up toward the top and the one you had under covers. For me what gave it away was I did a spell on HMAS Tobruk which as you may be away is very similar to the Sir Galahad. The Uniforms as i mentioned looked either British or German so I took a punt and said British (the English writing steared me in that direction). And finally I knew it was an LST because recently I was looking at SAS Drakensberg which has a lovely virtual tour on the SAN website and it shows how the forward deck lifts up to provide access to the hold- remembering that I drew all my conclusions and came up with what I did!

I just noticed Anixtu that you posted two pics from the same event, The Rhib in the hold and the stern door of Sir Galahad further up- how interesting

You know I looked at LCVP Mk5 and then at Mk4 didn’t think to go back to a Mk3 did I- Doh!

The Regatta craft looks like it was impersonating a Bay class vessel, certainly has all the hallmarks of one!

Note the cross bar aft on the deck, the orange and white ships boats, Block Island structure and the long aft for a flight deck! (Thank you I’ll take my extra points now) 😀

As for the mystery pic- it is most definately a RHIB of the Royal Navy, it’s being transported to Norway for operation White Mink and Cold Responce, it was taken aboard RFA Sir Galahad to Borgen, Norway where it was off loaded by personel from 17 P&M Rgt RLC (All hail me)

I’m not convinced that it is an LCVP Mk5C NL mate and here’s why:

Compare the tow pics and you’ll see what I mean. Firstly not the bow ramp, The wheelhouse id different, even the covered area is different. Besides, the LCVP Mk5C is smaller than the one in the original pic! I’m trying to make out the Service number on the side of the first pic but it’s so blurry I can see that it is L something though!

It seems these days that Hookway Aviation is registered to a PO box in Hobart Tasmania- I wonder if this saga will be like a certain vessel becoming a casino in China 😉

Oh dear, it really seems that no one really studies pictures anymore!

The first one is a Royal Norwegian Navy Landing Craft, a closer look at the flag would signify this!

Amphibious landing vessels:

* Sørøysund (L4503)
* Maursund (L4504)
* Tjeldsund (L4506)

The Third vessel isn’t a navy vessel at all, but an competitor in a silly ships afloat competition in England! Hence the English flags adorning the front of the craft and the barrels trying to keep it afloat.

Now as for the second; The splinter camo narrows it down to Scandinavian naval service, I initially thought either Sweden or Finland, someone else can take off from there.

The Fourth one; judging by the uniforms that the people are wearing it’s British of some sort, perhaps a Royal Marines strike craft or a Commando insertion vessel

Look at what I just turned up on Google Earth!

I scanned the entire airport, but I only found this one there at West Sale, granted they could have a couple more in the hanger there, but I doubt all of them are there!

Just an update- RAN Trackers- via ADF serials

i’m looking into Hookway- they are in West Sale, and the RAAF is in East Sale, I suspect that the RAAF may have these planes in their control via Hookway and you may find some at RAAF Wagga. I’ll let you know what I find

This is interesting information and totally different to what I have heard from my time in the RAN. I’ll have a dig around and contact my friends in HARS, they might know something here

I question this Nils- with all due respect mate. The RAN Trackers are sitting at HMAS Albatross burnt out after a fire took the fleet out- sabotage was suggested but never proven. There are a couple that have been saved; 1 by the RAN Flight Museum at HMAS Nowra and the other which is being brought up to flight standards with HARS- I saw it three weeks ago in Hanger 2.

or perhaps the Erieye, as that system is already installed on the FAB Embraer 135 AEW fleet 😎

The Erieye has been selected as the official radar for the S-2 fleet, I found this out via a Brazilian contact who is at the source. I question this selection because it would mean some redesigning of the tail in order to take the radar as well at redesigning of the support struts to allow the radar to collaps down for storage in the hanger

Well, there’s a bunch in AMARC… but their condition is “questionable”, I’d say.

Why would you want a Willy Fudd anyway? The electronics in the radar would be way too old! and yes the E-1’s airframes are questionable- I seriously doubt that they would ever fly under their own power again- maybe inside a transport plane- but not on their own!

If you want to talk about the BA-609, check out my thread V-22 Offsprings

The Italian Navy is looking at using a Military version already of the BA-609 as an alternative to NH-90’s

I just bought the latest Navy magazine where the front article was talking about the OV-10X and how Australia should buy some for use from the new LHD’s we are getting instead of buying F-35B’s. Now I’m not sure of this idea- F-35B’s offer a level of support and strike capability that a Bronco (or any similar aircraft) could not- yet the Lightning also has it’s draw backs too. I’m not going to weigh in on the Australian debate until I know for sure that we are going to go down that path- I have my own ideas about what we should have should the RAN FAA ever regain it’s fixed wings, but for now I’m sitting out!

Wow guys, you’re a great resource to have.

Uni: I take it you are part of Task Force 72, let me know when you guys are on show again in the Sydney- I’d like to come and have a look, maybe even finally meet you
