Everything I’ve seen in public says LM2500 engines. Fincantieri has contracts for design assistance, & integration of the propulsion system . . . and what does Cavour have?
Yeah I too have seen LM2500’s as primary propulsion for the Vikrant class, buut again the number vary- between 2 and 4 of these to be used. But I have been seeing that this class will be a CODOG arrangement so I am wondering which diesel engiens will be used.
So Wan- had you seen the pic before?
As for Tobie- interesting vessel- one of the T class IPV Catamarans in service, interesting use of pleasure boats 😉
No way Sea Gripen is going to be on the deck…… btw, will Sea Gripen have IOC before PAK-FA ??…. I don’t think so….
btw, I want to be optimistic abt RAC-MiG coming out with their new a/c…. I feel that RuN will be going forward with smaller a/c than the Su-seris on the deck and thats also better in terms of having larger numbers.
I was just reading that the RuN are retiring all their Flankers and swapping over to Migs, as you said the smaller airframe makes more room for larger aircraft. The Indian deal has given the Mig-29K a bit of a push forward and the Mig-35 a head start (I believe that is the model the RuN are getting!
I don’t know if its MTU, it maybe either Italians or French….. Germany is almost powering the entire PLAN fleet…
I have been reading that MTU may be powering the IAC’s- but there again I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a little misleading- especially since the Italians are helping with design

The TROUBLE with Vikramaditya modernisation was long ago….. the TROUBLE was not abt the work, but the TROUBLE was abt the ADDITIONAL FUNDING required for the ADDITIONAL Work, WRONG ESTIMATES & INFLATION….. and the DELAY is not abt Sevmash not able to do the work, the DELAY is due to FUNDING for the work to be done.
People won’t understand these issues, but i wud those who can’t understand to have a look closer home in the case of IAC. Did Cochin Shipyard start the work of IAC before they got the FUNDING??….. and will they continue if the Govt stops the funding??….. hell NOOO!!!
At the time the work started on Vikramditya, the Russian government had the ability to pay for starting work because they had just sold a heap of oil. Funding dried up when we had the economic crisis of the early parts of last decade (the same crisis that caused Asian nations to cancel all manner of deals). The Russians took a gamble on paying for the work and getting re-emburssed with the money that they were to get for the new Carrier- things took a sideways step and we now have this negative history tainting this piece of work!
The other part of the blame doesn’t rest, with workers nor government or anyone at all- it is due to the weather there, they really can’t work in the middle of winter because too many things go wrong- metal become really brittle with cold, exposed skin fuses to metal, a hot drink even- goes cold in under 2 min, and the climate has been rather harsh of late especially up there!
I hope Varyag maybe also some problems due to no-availablity of original blueprints of the a/c carrier…. cabling, piping are a head load of work that most guys won’t ever understand….. they are like reworking a embalmed body with new nerves….:eek:
Yeah it’s not easy sitting in the dark with a torch trying to trace pipes or cables and draw those on a sheet of paper in a cramped compartment! Yes I have had to do that.
Yeah this one has been going around for a long time and I too doubt the F-35 deal will fall through at this late stage! Especially after the Poms fought so hard to get skin and frame fabrication rights from the yanks and also the engine fiasco (UK wanted the F-136, the US wanted the F-135).
I do remember seeing a naval version of the Typhoon floating around and it was fitted with CFT’s that were developed for the Australian bid which went to the F-35.
As for Raf’s in UK service- no chance!

It is a great looking model indeed and I hope they do pull this off, I noticed the deck lined with Tejas- thought the naval version was lagging so far behind that they decided to hold off for a bit- hence the talks with SAAB about the Sea Gripen.
I also believe that the Engine config for the IAC program has been set at CODAG, with four Diesel engines (prob MTU’s) in combination with two LM-2500’s driving two shafts and a dual bow thruster, the model doesn’t show those!
Finally- please please tell me who the cutie is that’s trying to hide on the bridge in this shot 😉
OK now finally- getting back on track here. With all the troubles Vikramditya is having, has anyone heard what it happing with Shi Lang (aka the former Varyag). I believe she was supposed to put to sea at the end of last year for trails and to be formerly commissioned as fully working unit of the PLAN

I subscribe to the ATG Javelin news letters and I have known for some time that a military customer has bought the Mk-20 version- no specifics have been reveled except that the customer is in Europe. Some think it’s the French Navy as they lost their training capabilities back in the early 90’s with the retirement of their Zephyer jets.
The Mk-30 is said to be a full spec military jet trainer while the Mk-40 has the capability to take ordinance.

So how are we going on the last two vessel, any one got any ideas yet?
I don’t like the Garrett engine of the OV-10, mainly because it requires a new line of parts to manufacture and supply. Rather you would want something common to the helicopters or aircraft already in the inventory of the USN or USMC. I’m thinking something based upon T700-GE-401 (approx. 1900hp; UH-60), T58-GE-16 (approx. 1900hp; CH-46), Lycoming T53-L-703 (1800hp; AH-1), Allison T56-A-14/425 (overkill at approx. 4600hp/4800hp; P-3/C-2), T64-GE-413 (approx. 4000hp; CH-53; another overkill), or some variant of the T700/CT7 in the 2500hp range. The engines for the presidential eh101 fit the bill the best imo.
Mate if you want a common engine in a turbo prop power class- then why not settle for the PT6A-68, a very common engine on the market in both civilian and military sectors- it powers the T-6A Texan II and you know how many of those there are. It also powers many other aircraft and I’d rather this engine over an adapted helo engine!
The reason the AH-1 wouldn’t really work is that its supply line isn’t tenable. The engine is too labor intensive anymore and the parts aren’t exactly at the local napa. You’re better off with something already out there, or at least close to something out there. That is why the T700/CT7 option appeals to me. The 900-mile range Enforcer program was right up this alley. If they couldn’t navalize something like that then a layout like the Focke Wolfe 281 or Saab 21 would look pretty fearsome.
On the other hand one could argue for using something more in the Allison T56-A-425 powered and 2200-mile range A-2 Skyshark mold. The Skyshark was the turboshaft-powered A-1 Skyraider descendant. The skyshark was developed specifically for 500-foot deck CVE operations.

Thanks mate, I had a friend serve on Jarvis Bay in Blue crew, he said it was odd having a ship that had two crews and was always at sea- given the events of the day (East Timor) you can understand why they did that, and now it’s becoming the norm for all ships!

Black Cat: I was just going over the attachments above and I noticed that you have listed Vikramditya with a capability of a Marine detachment and docking facilities where as the Vikrant has none.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but the Cavour class does indeed have this capability built into it by the Italians and I would have thought that this alone would have been a big reason for the Indians taking on the design for the basis of IAC1-3, have they left this option out?

The 134 metre, 2,800 m2 hangar space can double as a vehicle hold capable of holding up to 24 main battle tanks or many more lighter vehicles (50 Dardo IFV, 100+ Iveco LMV), and is fitted aft with access ramps rated to 70 tons, as well as two elevators rated up to 30 tons for aircraft. Cavour can also operate as Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH), accommodating heavy transport helicopters (EH 101 ASH) and ~325 marines.
This is listed on many other sites as well (except for Naval-Technology, which is always behind in updating their info). The pic shows clearly the stern and Starboard ramps allowing transfer of vehicles on to Landing craft.
